Guitarists: Artifical Harmonic Question
« on: November 07, 2006, 03:17:30 PM »
I can do AH\'s for the 5 highest strings, but i cant get this one sound that i want out of the lowest one. I can do the Lamb of god- laid to rest one, but i cant do this other sound that i want. I thought you just hit ur thumb with the pick onto the string, but i cant get this damn sound at all. not sure how to show you the clips except youtube..only problem is the load times, especially on the second one since its not till late in the song.

the one i CAN do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygVON8A98tc (0:08)

the one i CANT do:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkLxONX-b9o (2:46)\\

Ignore the guy in the second one..you can hear the actual song in the background. Couldnt think of any other examples even though i know the sound is in a bunch of other songs.

I\'m not sure why it would be hard to do the artifical harmonic on the second clip.  I actually find it easier to replicate that type of sound on fatter wound strings than on the plain strings.

There are two things you should consider:

1.  How are you holding the pick?  The pick has three corners.  Instead of using the pointy corner, try using the one of the other two corners.  It\'s easier to hold the flesh of your thumb next to fatter corners of the pick.  You could also try using a quarter instead of a pick for practice purposes only.  It\'s really easy to get artifical harmonics with a coin.  That\'s what Billy Gibbons from ZZ Topp uses, and he is the harmonic king.

2.  Where on the string are you picking?  Try moving your hand up toward the neck, or down toward the bridge.  The idea behind natural and artifical harmonics is that you are subdividing the string into regions that vibrate separately, so you need to put your pick in the middle of one of those regions to get the loudest harmonic.  Just try it at different points on the string and you\'ll notice the difference.

So you wanna pull a Zakk Wylde huh, well if you can pull off a pinch on the high strings then it\'s basically the same thing that you do with the bass strings, throw the treble on your amp up that will help a lot
doing it on the doing it on frets close to a natural harmonic will help in the beginning aswell.

ohh yeah what Core said aswell, find and tap a natural harmonic somewhere over the pickups once you\'ve found a sweetspot practice picking around that spot while hitting the pinch harmonics.

It\'s funny, I was also thinking Zakk Wylde when I watched that video.  I never use these techniques generally, but I\'ve tried them out.  I think I learned how to do this about 15 years ago and then promptly forgot it.  :)

how you hold the pick is key....I\'ve always been able to do them, but I may have 2 major differences with most guitarists. First, I hold my pick with my thumb and  middle finger, which I guess most instructors would slap you for. Second, I have weird thumbs. They "hyper extend" or something, in that they curve backward when fully extended. For that reason, the inside of my thumb knuckle is always in place to hit the AH. Also, where your pick hand is in relation to the bridge is important. Experiment moving your pick hand around.
