The only difference between then and now is that today people are debating for more complicated things over which is better.
Back in the 16bit days for example it was mostly teenagers comparing their consoles, their creators behind them (Sega/Nintendo) and their mascots. Ofcourse the industry wasnt as expanded and grown ups were less. They were very simple products mainly targeting teens and kids.
Today even 27 year olds compare consoles for very complicated characteristics like strange hardware architectures, non-gaming features, online play, HUGE budget exclusives, specific dev support etc.
But thats because the industry evolved and expanded to a wider range of ages and unlike then, gaming industry has more connections to other industries and jobs than ever before.
In essence it\'s still the same console war. Just under a different mask
