Remember how I sent my camera to Canon?
« on: January 27, 2007, 03:57:57 PM »
Well they couldn\'t get the parts so they are sending a new camera. I had an S400 and this is the camera they are sending me. Its 100 dollars less than what I spent on the S400 so I dunno if this is a good camera or what. They said they could wait for the parts for my camera and send that back or I can keep this one. What should I do?

That\'s the camera.

Did you say you had the SD400?

Cause if so you\'re getting a much better camera.

And yea, you can\'t say you\'re getting a cheaper camera because obviously the price has gone done a lot on the camera you had and you can\'t even begin to compare it to prices of cameras now.

That\'s what I was thinking. The technology has gotten cheaper and shit so I didn\'t htink much of that. I had the S400. It was the older model of the SD400 I believe. I got it when I was a junior in high school. I\'m a sophmore in college now so I\'ve had it for 3 years and its probably a 4 year old+ model.

this is what i know:

the model S400 have a bigger image sensor of 1/1.8" CCD, or about .56", while the SD630 have 1/2.5" CCD, or about .4" CCD.

the benefit of bigger image sensor is better low light capture and lesser picture noise which mean less graininess.  But seeing the S400 is probably is a 2003 model while the SD630 is a 2006 model, in that 3 years difference.  I think they probably manage to shrink down the image sensor size from .56" to .4" and still perform similiarly in picture noise and low light level.  Technology improvement there.

Well, the SD630 have 6 megapixels while the S400 have 4 megapixels, but that means little to me as image sensor size is more important since either 4 or 6 megapixels are really good enough for 8 x 10" and bigger prints...

But seeing its been 3 years, so i guess you get similiar low light performance and 2 megapixels more on the new camera.

Canon is nice enough to let you decide to get the new one or wait for them to get the parts for repair on the old one.  So, its your choice.  As for me, I think maybe selecting the new camera isn\'t a bad idea.

bro has that same camera.  took it on 4 beach trips so far and it takes to the sand, sun, and water drops like a champ. :)

quality is decent for a pocket cam.  I think you\'ll like this one MUCH better than any comparable 4yr old digicam

You\'d have to be crazy not to get the new one.
