got a PS3 today
« on: February 26, 2007, 05:23:12 PM »
couldn\'t resist any longer after playing motorstorm demo at a friend\'s house.  riding those bikes is stupid fun.  plus all the movies i want to watch are on Blu-Ray.

the unit itself is heavy.  far heavier than i expected.  then as i was plugging it in, i remembered no external power brick.  it\'s not so heavy anymore sitting in my stand.  :)

it\'s eerily quiet.
a fair amount of heat comes out the back, but not a concern in my stand.  i wouldn\'t stuff it into a closed wooden entertainment cabinet, however.

initial setup it up took WAY too long.
how a casual gamer is expected to sit through all that is beyond me.  it wouldn\'t accept my userid that i use for live also.  i highly doubt someone was using it already.  couldn\'t get it to snag a wireless IP from my linksys router.  will have to play more with it later, but it worked fine over lan.
it supports USB keyboard +mouse, but i didn\'t feel like dragging them from my PC.  will have to see if a bluetooth set will work.  recognized my 1080P right away over HDMI.

the sixaxis is very light.  almost too light.
i would love to open it and put some 4oz weights in each handle.
the L2 and R2 triggers are tough to hold in without some sort of texture on them.  my index fingers keep sliding off the bottom.  using my middle fingers to hold them in now and it\'s not comfortable.  if the battery dies, you can use the USB cable but they only include a 3m one .

loading times for games isn\'t bad.
about what i expected.

GT:HD demo looked nice, but the cars felt too "floaty".  i can\'t describe it.  never cared for sim racers anyways.

resistance: FOM is incredible.
if it\'s not 60fps locked, it\'s close to it.
the controls handle just like i expected.
i don\'t like how the enemies bodies aren\'t destructible.  i\'m spoiled by Gears of War.
i don\'t see it as a limitation of the PS3, but rather the dev just didn\'t have the time or effort to include it.

motorstorm, like i said is stupid fun.
i can\'t get over how incredible it looks and all the action going on.  again, if it\'s not locked at 60fps, it\'s close allof the time.
the sixaxis can be tilted to steer but i find it way too  touchy, especially with the bikes.

i don\'t have any Blu-Ray movies yet, but i downlaoded the blackhawk down clip in 1080P and it\'s instantly better than any HD-DVD film i\'ve watched.  the image just jumps right off the screen.

the playstation store interface is ok.  nothing fancy.  it\'s leagues behind XBOX live, but it gets the job done.  i don\'t enjoy playing my 360 against anonymous people on live, and my friends list is very tight.  i imagine my PS3 online experience will be the same.  too much immaturity out there.

overall, i\'m glad i got one and look forward to all the Blu-Ray goodness coming our way.

You will be surprised to hear that Resistence is actually locked 30fps ;)
Insomniac did a great job at keeping the controls extemely responsive and everything in high speed despite that ;)

not sure about Resistence framerate, but i wouldn\'t be surprised if its locked at 30fps...same could be said about Gears of War which is also 30fps.

I cant wait to get one.. but it seems like it will never happen. In order to get one, I want a HDTV. In order to get an HDTV, my girlfriend want us to finish the house\'s basement .. It will take at least another year or two before I can gather all that cash hehe.
can\'t see why not!

Difference between RFOM & Gears is that Resistance is steady while gow dips to 20 and below here and there

GoW mostly dips in cutscenes. I\'d consider it fairly steady otherwise.

On a side note, for the first time since launch, stores in my area have PS3s on the shelves for more than a day.  There was even one online at bestbuy Canada when I checked earlier (only 1 left though).

Sony really needs some of it\'s anticipated AAA exclusives to hit the market and soon.
