Critics divided

Early reviews of "The Children of Hurin" have been mixed.

"I fear that it will be considered as the spin-off it was never intended to be," wrote Murrough O\'Brien in the Independent on Sunday newspaper. "I hope that its universality and power will grant it a place in English mythology."

But The Sunday Times\' Tom Deveson was scathing, referring to "pages of self-indulgent feebleness."

"Fans will doubtless read on with passionate piety, but for others it is an act of painful penitence."
