Anyone buy an HDMI splitter they like?
« on: January 18, 2008, 11:54:33 AM »
I need one more HDMI than i have. my tv has 2, which has a dvd player and cable box in it. Whenever i get a ps3 ill need the extension, plus i might as well get one with 3-4 more ports just incase.

Does anyone know any good splitters. I checked monoprice and amazon and theyre all generic looking brand ones with alright reviews.

Does splitters make the quality worse?

these are the main 2 im looking at..but was just wondering if anyone actually used one instead of just going by google

How about save up one of the 2 HDMI connections by connecting the DVD player through the component video input instead.  Also, if you don\'t watch digital cable so much, maybe save up that space by connecting the antenna RF cable to the digital RF input to get digital over-the-air broadcast.  By doing so, you save up 2 HDMI...that is if you don\'t watch cable that much or there are shows in cable that you couldn\'t get ota...

the reason why I suggest connecting DVD via component is because DVD resolution quality is only 480p at its max.  So, its more worth it to use the HDMI connection for High Def sources like PS3, Blu-Ray, etc...well, use the HDMI for dvd for now until you get ps3 or blu ray or something, then switch the dvd to component, and use the ps3 or blu ray for hdmi...

really good question as I don\'t really know either.  monoprice seems to make good products for their price, and judging by their specs for those switchers.  Its look like it can accept digital signal up to 1080p with no signal loss.  So, maybe it\'s should be fine since they make that claim in the specs...

maybe someone should chime in about these switchers.

I actually was thinking of putting my dvd player on component a while ago..just had a brain fart.

Ill connect it up later to see if theres any hit in quality..would save me from buying more hdmi cables and the splitter.

yea also note that once u get a ps3 - with it plugged into HDMI you will still be able to upscale ur movies to 1080p with reg Dvds - i am guessing thats what ur current dvd player does since it has hdmi

my tv is 1080i..just didnt see enough of a difference when i was looking at the tv\'s to pay the extra 300 er whatever it was. plus i wasn\'t planning on a ps3 for a lot longer, or MS changing stuff around so you could get 1080p (not that more than like 2 games are 1080p compatible).

so with the dvd player not HDMI, is it not able to upscale anymore?

that depends on your dvd player.  Some dvd players can upscale to 1080i for both component and HDMI output, and even 1080p via HDMI output, but rarely upscale to 1080p for component...

Try to see if your dvd player can upscale to 1080i via component output.  BTW, if your tv can display native 480p too, that would be nice for your dvd player to output it as such via component.

Either way, if your dvd player can\'t upscale 1080i via componet, nor can\'t your tv display native 480p, then just let your tv upscale 480p to 1080i...

Go with the Monoprice.  Nice user reviews on AVS and with the latest versions there seems to be fewer handshaking issues.

I have this one: http://octavainc.com/HDMI%20switch%205port.htm

And it works great.
