Vista Question

I have had Vista for about 2 months and have found various tweaks that have improved the performance and gotten rid of some of the annoying Vista features.

My question is:  Is there some memory shadowing feature in Vista and if so, how can I disable it?  A friend told me about it and says it slows down your PC.

I don\'t think its possible to turn off.. and from what I\'ve read, initially it does slow down your system a little bit, but in the long run it will become optimized and "learn" what software and programs you use most.. and have them preloaded in memory so when you go to run it your loading times will be greatly reduced.

But some people hate this feature (mainly because they are "forced" to use it), I don\'t have vista personally, but I have set up several systems for others.. so I don\'t have much first-hand knowledge.

In previous versions of Windows, system responsiveness could be uneven. You may have experienced sluggish behavior after booting your machine, after performing a fast user switch, or even after lunch. Although too many carbohydrates might slow you down after lunch, your computer slows down for different reasons. When you\'re not actively using your computer, background tasks— including automatic backup and antivirus software scans— take this opportunity to run when they will least disturb you. These background tasks can take space in system memory that your applications were using. After you start to use your PC again, it can take some time to reload your data into memory, slowing down performance.

SuperFetch understands which applications you use most, and preloads these applications into memory, so your system is more responsive. SuperFetch uses an intelligent prioritization scheme that understands which applications you use most often, and can even differentiate which applications you are likely to use at different times (for example, on the weekend versus during the week), so that your computer is ready to do what you want it to do. The only problem I am seeing (more irritating than a problem) is that there is hitching every so often when playing LOTRO.  Almost like the hard drive is caching or something.  

I also thought with SuperFetch you needed to use a USB flash memory drive?

how many gigs of ram do you have?

that was my problem when games were stuttering. it almost looked like i had a bad connection

Do you guys think its worth getting the 64-bit version?

I guess you have to go through the windows site and you order it for a "minimal charge"...whatever that means

i got my vista 64bit from newegg as system builder oem works fine

but really there isnt a lot out there that takes advantage of the 64bit yet

It could be the search service indexing in the background, or perhaps the system restore. Just a guess though.

Not sure if im having the same problem, but bioshock seems to be using all of my ram sometimes. It has stopped doing it the last 30 minutes i\'ve been playing, but earlier today it would freeze/take forever during load times, almost like vista and bioshock was too much for 2 gigs of ram.

When it was slow, the physical memory read "95%"..then when it ran alright the last half hour it was 66% (i alt-tabbed, not sure if that would make it higher than it was when the game was running alone), which i guess is liveable but the fact i didnt change anything doesnt make me too sure it won\'t go back to using 95%

I haven\'t noticed it much lately.  Not sure what it was.  In Age of Conan it doesn\'t do it all.  

What are your specs?  I am running 2 gigs of memory too, but I never ran into any problems with Bioshock, then again I was using XP at the time.  I might fire it up and see what it is like under Vista.  I should have bought the 64bit edition of Vista so I could have put a full 4 gigs in.

Now my only problem is my computer totally freezes every so often to the point that i have to force a reboot. Usually it happens if i have more than 1 window up and i close one of them, or when a video is running. other than that it always seems random

You are running almost the same setup I am with the exception of the video card - I have an 8800 GT.  Does it seem like the HD is caching when you get these freezes?

not really. sometimes it will freeze with the hdd light on, sometimes it doesnt. The hard drive is brand new, and i\'ve tested the ram a few times before and it\'s worked fine..but those are the only things i could think of that could cause it too freeze.

I\'ve tried installing some mobo drives i never did before but that ended up not working. It could be software but i wouldnt know where to begin other than google to try to figure out that kind of problem.
