Problems with vista
« on: June 27, 2008, 08:10:13 PM »
I heard about the problems but i thought it was just computer people being melodramatic..but im definitly having major problems with this damn OS

two things i\'ve googled and still cant figure out.

1) Battlefield 2 keeps crashing in the middle of loading a map. I was messing around and ended up installing direct-x 10 even though i only have a dx 9 card. Would that really mess it up? and if it does, how do i get it back to dx 9? (this one ill google more since not too many people here have vista/play bf2)

2) My computer keeps completely locking up. Mouse and keyboard dont work and im forced to reboot. The most common times it happens is watching an hd video on gametrailers, or if i have 4+ tabs up on the internet. Ever since i updated the mobo it\'s stopped doing it as frequently on the hd videos, but it will still do it 65% of the time if i have the 4+ tabs going.

all my drivers are updated so its not that. any ideas?

i also did that system test that vista has and the 2 gb of ram came up completely fine

nope. Just completely ctd\'s with no error messages.

i did some more looking and someone\'s random fix was to delete the file bf2 creates in my documents, which actually worked. The downside is that every time i\'ll have to re-do my settings, but it\'s do-able

another problem, not expecting a solution

I can\'t get my mic to work. the headphones themselves work, i\'ve gone into control panel and put the mic as the default recorder, max\'d the volume, downloaded sound blaster audigy drivers, and the thing doesnt work. any ideas?

I take it you have 32 bit vista?  I have been getting used to 64 bit Vista Home Premium and so far it\'s pretty nice... but I\'ve also had my share of problems (none of which are Microsoft\'s fault from what I\'ve read).

I have a 7900gt and play mainly cod4.. it plays no problem with the standard video card driver vista installs by default, and even though this driver is 2+ years old it works.. albeit with flickering textures.

Now when I got to update the driver to the newest 64 bit version straight from nvidias driver download page (I\'ve also tried beta version from guru3d), my computer tells me my video card is malfunctioning and not until I un-install the driver, reboot and let vista re-install it\'s own does it recognize the video card.

Also using the newest 64 bit drivers vista will have a scrambled screen when you wake your computer up from sleep mode.  From my research it seems to only be a problem for people with the 7xxx series nvidia cards and the 64 bit drivers, every other card seems to work how they should.  I know my 7900gt is getting a little old.. but it still plays the games I want to play good enough for me.. but I have been eying up a 4850 or 4870.. this might speed this purchase up/

i actaully have the 64 bit version. ended up buying a good cpu when my mobo crapped out thinking that was the problem. and i have a 7900gt (with updated drivers) and not having the scrambled screen problem.

but the freezing and now this mic trouble alone is making me regret getting vista right now..i just wanted to be set for the future whenever i get a computer good enough for dx10

now get this problem:

my internet seems to run fine..then i just go to gamespot.com and click around a bit, and my internet gets knocked off. It\'s almost every damn time. especially if i go to the 360 or ps3 tab, new releases, and start searching through the weeks. It\'s almost like, the page has too much to load and takes forever loading the pictures, and eventually my internet cuts out for 30 seconds to a couple minutes.

The more i mess with this computer the more im willing to throw pc games out the window

No other site does this (at least that i go of), and it seems like it\'s 99% of the time

Why are you even bothering to put yourself through this, when you can save your self all the headaches and just install XP. Vista is a piece of crap all style ZERO substance.

Now you you don\'t have a copy of XP just download one from a bittorent tracker, problem solved.

a few reasons

1) laziness
2) i can\'t see myself getting a torrent OS to work. I can barely get mods working in games, and only some of them
3) rosetta stone is a pain in the ass to get them to give you a new key to put on a new computer. they have an option to deactivate a product but i dont know if that will do what i think it will do
4) i bought vista because i had to buy a new OS..just seemed short-sighted to buy a brand new copy of XP (which almost costs as much as vista). seems like a waste to let it sit

but mainly because i dont know if ill be able to get a torrent OS to work right
