Valkyria Chronicles is an amazing experience. It’s rare, these days, that a game can make such a huge departure from its genre’s roots and yet keep the best things about it. It revolutionizes strategy RPGs in such a way that it can be appealing to fans of the subgenre, newcomers, and perhaps even sworn-off non-fans of it. The best thing that could happen now would be a sequel.
But, honestly, this is so innovative and so polished a game that if you pass it up, the real moron is you.
Japanese RPG’s are often berated for all playing too similarly, but that is one pitfall that Valkyria Chronicles easily avoids. A touchingly mature story of racism and war, with endearing personalities in the main characters as well as many of the less important side characters make this an experience that no RPG fan should miss. If you complain about the JRPG selection on the PS3 and don’t own Valkyria Chronicles then you are doing yourself a huge disservice.

Need another reason? A new post on the PlayStation Blog has confirmed that the downloadable content that was made available in Japan will be translated for western audiences. Both add-on packs will be made available in America and Europe in "early 2009." The DLC involves a new mission and an extra hard skirmish mode. One of these allows you to play as the evil Imperial army invading Gallia and includes new vocals and and new sets of battles. These packs were paid content in Japan so no doubt they\'ll be the same over here. So even as you play through the lengthy main mission you\'ll have some new stuff to look forward to early next year. Hopefully Sega will also add trophies at some point too.
Valkyria sales are often spoken of in the same sentence as “unfortunate” and “should have been better” - so when news arrives that would actually put the words “Valkyria Chronicles” and “chart topping” together, I figured you guys might want to hear about it.According to this Gamasutra report, last week Valkyria Chronicles made quite a comeback, both in Japan and here in North America. Looks like all that evangelical work from the hardcore fans, coupled with the DLC and recent buzz about the game, is boosting Valkyria back up where it should be.In North America, Valkyria Chronicles jumped last week to top 5 among PS3 game sales, back on the list at #5, and behind only titles like Guitar Hero and Killzone 2. Considering the game came out last November, it’s an excellent sign that DLC, continued support from SEGA, and amazing support from all the Valkyria fans truly can have a great effect on game sales. Props to all you evangelists who are telling your friends and fellow PS3 owners to pick it up - you have made a difference!The biggest success story, however, is in Japan - at a cheaper budget price for their re-heat of the title, it makes me extremely happy to announce that according to the Gamasutra info, Valkyria Chronicles was the highest selling game on amazon - period - in Japan last week, beating out the likes of Resident Evil 5 (Biohazard in Japan) and other blockbusters, and nestling in nicely on the same top 5 list as Yakuza 3, which ranked fifth. (Nice work to our counterparts in Japan!)It’s good to finally see some great news for a game that truly deserves it. New DLC announced for Valkyria Chronicles Valkyria Chronicles has lived the ultimate underdog tale. After somewhat subdued sales in the US, the title has sprung back to life over the course of the past month. Sales surged 400% in the wake of the release of 3 DLC packages and a temporary price cut.It seems like the little engine that could isn\'t done chugging yet! New DLC has been announced for Valkyria Chronicles in the latest issue of Famitsu. Details are still sketchy, but the DLC is called \'Battle Challenge\'! Is an online competitive multiplayer coming to the game? Seems likely!We\'ve contacted Sega\'s US branch for confirmation of a US release as well.
