What do you think about Abandonwarez?
« on: December 13, 2000, 10:46:23 AM »
You know, it isn\'t really Warez at all. Abandonwarez means ( in case you don\'t know ) a game that can\'t be bought from shops anymore ( i. e. it\'s so old ). These sites in .net dedicated to Abandonwarez have lots of old classics to download.

I like the idea of abandonwarez. The "warez" word still is there because it isn\'t completely legal ( but I wonder why not? ).

But who likes Abandonwarez and who doesn\'t?

I love abandonwarez and have been playing them for years on my computer. I have well over 2 or 300. They are so great! I get to play the games I missed out on being a console gamer, such as :Police Quest Series, Space Quest Series, Leisure Suit Larry, old Flight Simulator, Stunts, Duke Nukem 1 and 2, All the strip poker games ever (just kidding! :)), etc.!

Abandonwarez rock. ANd, it is a heck of alot more legal than burning games.

You all know how I feel about ABwarez and roms, provided they are no longer supported or sold by whomever holds the copyrights. But I would like to point out, Altered, that old Sierra Online games such as Police Quest, Space Quest, and such are still being sold. I won\'t get ****ty or anything, since without abandonware you most likely would NEVER had played those games at all.. let alone be more prone to buying future sequals should there be any. I would as of you that you buy the games from Sierra\'s website. http://www.Sierrastudios.com

Also, Abandonware is technically piracy, and legally no better or worse than burning and distributing pre-release copys of Sonic Adventure 2. Now morally, that\'s something you\'re just going to have to figure out for yourself. It is your own boundry to cross or not.

My choice: When a company fails to support me as a consumer by not giving me at least the chance to buy the software from them legitamately, I will not support that company by downloading said software for free.

All I ask of these companies is for the chance to obtain the software I desire.

Yes, but the line of whether a game is ABwarez or not is quite accurate. Games like Pirates! and such ( very old text- and graphic-adventures ) are ABwarez. But games like Space Quests etc. aren\'t.

But I think game-developers should support ABwarez so it would become legal; they should make able to download oldies from their sites. I wouldn\'t care if I\'d have to push some banner-ad so the game-developer could get even a small profit of each game downloaded or something.

But I have crossed the line of ABwarez too, sometimes. The line just is quite invisible; you can\'t surely know is some game you download sold somewhere. But; I don\'t think I\'m a pirate still because I don\'t burn those games and sell them forward.

And that\'s much bigger crime than just downloading for your own personal use.

Pirates are cool!! err..well at least those on Monkey Island(TM) anyway.

Personally, I think they should set a time limit for games such that after a number of years, it becomes public property and everyone should be able to play it.

I think 7 or 8 years should be a good enough time span for the software to be commercially sold(and make money) and after that it\'s free for all!

After all, do you still want to buy a copy of some old 8 or 16 bit cartridge games? I think most people are playing these games for nostalgic value.

Are you a fan of Monkey Island serie, Paul? :)

With Mon-Key Kom-Bat and all... Have u played Escape from MI then? :)

Well, I agree with you Paul. There should be a time limit. But some developers want to cash with old games. They release a classic-games-collection-pack ( wich usually are wery weak, f. ex. Williams Arcade collection\'s ), but sadly they don\'t understand that getting those old games from .net doesn\'t take more than a minute...

But ABwarez should be legal. Let\'s make it legal. Let\'s make a manifest ;)

nah... gotta see.

I did not know that they were still available, I will go buy them. I have bought the new ones as of late. Though, because I believe the developer should get his earned money. I had believed these games were no longer being sold new, obviously this is wrong.

You want to buy what? :)

Well, many games are re-released in a collection pack. F.Ex Monkey Island -Bounty Pack ( with luck you can find it. Three MI -games, all CD versions; from the first to the third ), etc. etc. etc.

But the question went and goes:

You want to buy what? :)
