The Return Of A Classic...
« on: December 13, 2000, 05:56:54 AM »
It seems that a new sense of optimism has finally hit the Mortal Kombat community; optimism that a fifth instalment of such a fighting game may bring the legendary franchise back to life. The question now, is whether such a game will be able to compete with the likes of Dead Or Alive and Tekken.

It was last year that a large piece of the MK pie was taken away with the departure of John Tobias, David Michicich and Josh Tsui; all who had key roles in the development of the previous Mortal Kombat games. With Tobias’ departure, it was suggested that another Mortal Kombat game was ‘impossible’.

Impossible or not, Ed Boon is readying for yet another instalment in what has been commonly described by the critics as ‘the fighting game that just won’t die’. Already, ideas about making the game ‘widescreen’, complete with interactive arenas and advanced graphics have been processed. So far, only Scorpion has been confirmed as the character to return to the series.

A new advanced fighting system will be implemented into the game. Weapons were first introduced in Mortal Kombat 4 with mixed results. It is expected that each fighter will now have up to 10 to 15 attacks with each weapon. Remember “Test Your Might” in Mortal Kombat II? It seems that a new “Test Your Might” challenge may be implemented in the fifth game.

In a recent interview with the MK Development Team, new pictures of Rayden were accidentally revealed to the public suggesting his presence within the game. Like it or not, MK is coming back in a big way. There are many hurdles that the series will have to cross however, before it can impact the arcades by 2001.

There are no confirmations that this game will arrive onto the PlayStation2 or other consoles at this time, but Todd Allen did mention the possibility of seeing such a game for the Dreamcast because of it’s 2D capabilities for artwork contained within the game. At the same time, Allen continued to mention the lack of polygon performance with the Dreamcast, hinting at another platform that could handle both a high polygon count along with two-dimensional graphics. Can we say, PlayStation2?

MK 5

Hmmm,....
I have mixed feelings about the MK series.
Though MK4 and Gold are both actually 3D built
and do have the \'sidestep\' button gamers still
felt the game is a 2D playing game.
I think Midway has to rethink the whole basics
of the MK fighting mechanics. ( hyper frog jumping )
For new info always check MK5.org.
But who knows, maybe MK5 will regain the crown again.

Tekken? DOA?

NO!!! While both Tekken and DOA are great games, MK had it\'s own style I REALLY LIKED.
We need a Konami vs. capcom fighting game, but Capcom and Konami are HUGE rivals

Your right, A classic is returning.. but it\'s not Mortal Kombat that\'s I\'m talking about. Possibly the greatest PC fighter EVER, One Must Fall 2097, has a confirmed sequel... OMF: BattleGrounds. The game will feature a re-written Unreal Engine and free roaming areans to fight in. Think of a cross between UT and Mortal Kombat with 90 foot tall Mechs.

Yeah the graphics aren\'t A+, ZOE it ain\'t, but the development team is small, broke, and it\'s being made for the PC. I will try to post screenshots and a link later tonight when I find their homesite again.

man!  I think mk2 is the most well done.  mk3 have cheap moves and fatalities.  MK4, i will give it 1/5 rating for overall.  mk5, go to hell.  anyway, i have a feeling syxxxkorny just do the copy and paste methods.  These words look familiar.  oh yeah, i\'d seem them on an mk site.  but i forget where.

Sorry, but MK just doesn\'t impress me. The only reason I thought it was interesting when it first came out was because of the fatalities. After that the series got old quick. And I can\'t imagine that this is going to be much different from any others in the series. Oh, well...

SyxxKorn, relax dood.
After MK2 , Mk3 became a humurous game with the original
concept going \' over the top\'.
MK1 and MK2 were nice because they had fab graphics for it\'s time with those digitized characters and then adding
the nasty death moves.
When MK3 came we already had innovative 3D fighting games
with some serious gameplay : MK became the laughing stock
of fighting games. Midway tried to turn the tide with MK4,
but changes were too little too late.
And indeed it would be nice if MK5 would bring somethin
totally new.
BTW. same goes for Killer Instinct from Rare. If they wanna
have a KI succes on NGC they\'d better think over a new concept. Maybe Nintendo will be back with a Killer app.

They should let the series die. It never played that well, its best time was in MK2. The finishing moves became stupid, like the Arcade machine dropping down on someone, or the Brutalitys or whatever they was. The dial-a-combo system implemnted in MK3 and on is annoying. The weapons in 4 was an after thought. The graphics sucked. The control sucked. The sound sucked. You know what? The game just sucked. Know what sucks more? I bought each one of them. Yep. The first PS game I ever bought was actually MK3. I bought it along with my PS one day at Wal-Mart. I was impressed at the time, then the novetly of dial-a-combo wore off and I was bored. But still, it was decent and MK Trilogy was "ok". Course, then Mortal Kombat 4 came around... I bought MK GOLD for the DC. I wanted to puke. Now that I look back on the series and after the novelty of it being "offensive" and "cutting edge", I have to say.. The games pretty much was lame. Its like when "Night Trap" was the cool thing (or was it just me?). Midway should just let the series die. Move on.

As for Killer Instinct. I enjoyed the first one slightly. I loved the fast gameplay. But, in my opinion it wasn\'t a true fighting game. It was a memory game with the dial-a-combo (was that in style or something?). Of course, then KI2 came around and critics was throwing a raving fit on how good it was. I hate to say it, I thought it sucked. By the time it came out, I was tired of the series and thought the new characters was pretty damn lame. So, anyways, I bought KI GOLD still for the N64 (Whats with the GOLD titles?). I eventually spilled soda on it and ruined it. Whoope. Big loss. I think Rare realized it sucked, because they didn\'t make another. Hope I\'m right.

Anyways. Moral of the story? Dial-a-combo system sucks. Give me the good ole\' chain combos of Street Fighter anyday. And let the MK series die.

One final note. I thought the first MK movie was excellent. Too bad the second was a piece of crap.

I have to give mortal kombat trilogy credit though, but think of how awesome the fatalities would look on the PS2!

MK Trilogy was a good idea, I admit that. The problem is the gameplay wasn\'t solid to begin with.

As for the fatalities. Well, there is only so many ways you can knock someones head off and they\'ve ran out.
