Cerny: PS4 8GB GDDR5 RAM Was Decided in Very Final Meeting
« on: April 25, 2014, 08:32:59 PM »
Quote
Mark Cerny, lead architect of the PlayStation 4, almost didn’t get his way when it came to getting 8GB of GDDR5 RAM into the console (it was going to be only 4GB). In fact, it came down to the very final meeting regarding the architecture of the PS4. Cerny knew that GDDR5 was the way to go, and that the amount had to be 8GB, but was worried that stating that without evidence, would mean it would be brushed aside. So he waited until the final moment, and came prepared...

...Mark Cerny said in Game Informer:

I very intentionally waited. They asked, “What do you think Mark?” I said, “Well, let’s get feedback from the developers.” I did not speak up until the very final meeting on the topic, and then I said, “I think we have to do this.”

Andrew House elaborated:

When he finally did get his opinion, he had a PowerPoint presentation prepared, a list of feedback from developers with reasoning behind this. He certainly made a case when he made his case. And it was a good one, and we were gravitating toward that decision.

can't believe i watched the whole entire video.  at first, i only watched like 25 minutes of it then i take a break.  then the next day which is today, i watched the rest of it.  When i got through like 30 minutes of the video, i was thinking its going to be a long boring interview but actually there are moments that are really interesting and funny.  lol.

At 23:30, Shuhei Yoshida thought one of the questions on the card has a question about him being on the street.  But it wasn't on any cards though.  What a surprise, a very successful and smart man was on the street when he was much younger.

At 28:06, Shuhei told the story of the first time he met Ken Kutaragi, where Ken said the silicon graphic workstations are sold at $100,000 and he (Ken) is making a similar machine and sell it for $500.  Shuhei thought wow, this person, ken kutaragi is a liar.  that was funny.  lol.

At 39:11, Mark Cerny said "oh i heard is that we are going to be having a meeting with Ken Kutaragi hand pick producer for the title from japan.  those were scary words to hear.  but it turn out to be Shu, so it was all okay."  Lol.  I didn't know Ken Kutaragi is quite a scary person.  well, i seen what he looks like back then 10 years ago and he has a scary looking face but i didn't know his personality is scary as well.

At 44:42, there were a few seconds of silence and Mark said, "well that was a conversation killer."  Lol.

At 46:25, Mark said "we must have been 33 or 34, i used to called us the 3 musketeers.  Well not to your face.  But you and I and Andy were all almost exactly the same age.  But still are.  works that way."  Lol.

At 47:20, Shuhei said, "...you left Universal."  Mark said, "but you know why i left Universal?  You took my team.  So I have had Naughty Dog and Insomniac under contract to make titles to which i didn't license to Sony.  As soon as their contracts were up, they signed with Sony directly and cut out the middle man which is me.  its not that i minded that much.  It just that meant now what am i going to do?  Its now i can go out there and I can try to find team of that caliber.  Shu was saying he was lucky and I was saying I was lucky to work with Jason Rubin, Andy Gavin, Tedd Price, and Jesus Brota.  So what I am going to do?  am I going to find more team?  Or no, so i decided i just gave up.  I was president of the studio - i gave up being president of the studio to go be a lone wolf consultant so i can keep working with the team on the project.  thank you Shu."

Shu said, "...to Naughty Dog or Insomniac hiring you as a consultant?"

Mark said, "...we made it all work."

Shu said, "I hope you made the right decision."  Mark, "it work out okay.  Easier if you haven't steal the team but still."  That is interesting, kind of sad, but funny.

at 59:01, Shuhei talked about what was it like working with Ken Kutaragi.  He said he had respect and appreciation what he (Ken) has done for him individually.  That its.  He said, "working for Ken was really, really difficult.  He was very genius but he could change what he was saying or leading the team 180 degrees.  Especially engineering team working directly under Ken have very difficult job trying to understand or predict where he might be going.  Another thing is somehow he struggle to give compliments to people that he works with or work for him.  Over 15 years, i got complimented by Ken twice.  When i say this to my colleagues, they say twice, that's a lot.  That is how for me giving compliment is free...but somehow Ken - if he had been to just say to his people you did great job.  our lives would have been much happier but still we all love Ken."

Shuhei added, "He had this shy part about himself.  One time when we were having dinner with Ken.  Ken said to me in a small group we were, 'i know that you don't necessarily like me but you are here working for me because you know that under me you can do some exciting work.'  and I was like, yes exactly."
