DVD Regions - Can I get around them ?

Is there anyway (outside japan) to get around the regions for the DVD\'s ?
I have a zone 4 console (Aus/NZ) but most of the DVD\'s at local video shops etc are Zone 1\'s.

I gather there are chips available, but:
- Are they international ?
- they will void the warrenty

Is there any other way ?
