German design group Urban Invention has created a tool that lets pedestrians play Pong as they wait to cross the street.
The device is called ActiWait, and it replaces the usual 'Walk' button found at traffic lights with a touchscreen featuring a Pong-inspired game. Pedestrians can play against someone across the street as the device counts down until the next green light.
Aside from being a creative idea, Urban Invention says ActiWait has potential to save lives by keeping pedestrians from jaywalking. To widen its appeal, the company is looking to add other apps to the device, such as speed dating and update-to-date news.
A working prototype is currently installed in the the city of Hildesheim, Germany and developers are looking to take it elsewhere. The company recently launched an Indiegogo campaign for $43,000/€35,000 that would fund further development and production.
http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/12/09/german-traffic-light-uses-pong-to-deter-jaywalkingkind of interesting. But i thought that would be expensive though to build it on many traffic light poles. I watched a video of a guy that play pong against someone across the street from the link and i thought that is for 2 players only. one from each end.
what if there are more than 1 person on each end waiting to cross the streets? So the rest won't get to play and some will still jaywalk anyway. Not only that but what if there is only one person waiting to cross the street and there are nobody at the other end to play it? So he or she wouldn't be able to play anyway and some might jaywalk because of that.
