LG Doubles Down on 8K with Huge Screens, Thin OLED

LG is doubling down on 8K Ultra HD, “ultra-large” screen sizes of 70 to 88 inches, and thin OLED TVs in its 2020 lineup, which also includes the brand’s first models with Next Gen ATSC 3.0 TV tuners and the UHD Alliance’s Filmmaker Mode...

...The new 77-inch 8K OLED and three new 4K OLEDs feature a thin design with at least one model coming in at only 0.79 inches in depth. The backs of the TVs are flat and can be flush-mounted to a wall with no gap between the wall and TV. In these TVs, electronics and speakers are built into the displays, whereas two current OLEDs bearing the Wallpaper designation are thinner at 0.23 and 0.15 inches because their electronics and speakers are outboarded into a separate soundbar-style enclosure.

Two new Wallpaper-style OLEDs at 77 and 65 inches also appear in the 2020 lineup...

...LG stressed that its 8K TVs qualify to use the CTA’s 8K Ultra HD logo, which signifies multiple display parameters beyond pixel count, including the International Display Measurement Standard (IDMS) for 8K contrast modulation (CM). The company says its 8K TVs deliver CM numbers up to 92%, exceeding the standard’s minimum, whereas competing models don’t meet the minimum. A higher CM score delivers “real 8K” with the clarity that enhances the pixels’ detail and color, according to LG...

...Thin OLEDs: In its new OLED lineup, LG continues to offer two Wallpaper-designated OLEDs at 77 and 65 inches, both with included soundbars that incorporate all TV electronics to deliver a display thickness of 0.23 and 0.15 inches, respectively.

Expanding on the concept, LG is launching a Gallery 77-inch 8K OLED and three Gallery 4K OLEDs at 77, 65, and 55 inches. Their electronics and speakers are built into thin displays up to 0.79 inches deep with no-gap flush mounting.

LG also promises 2020 shipments of its 65-inch rollable OLED TV, unveiled a year ago with a thin display that rolls up into a tabletop enclosure and disappears.

...Next Gen TV (ATSC 3.0): Seven premium-priced 8K and 4K OLED TVs, but no LCD TVs, feature ATSC 3.0 over-the-air TV tuners. The feature, dubbed Next Gen TV, appears only in seven premium 55- to 88-inch OLED models in recognition that premium features usually start at the high end and that ATSC 3.0 broadcasting will be a staged rollout, the company said.

Next Gen TV stations will be capable of broadcasting 1080p and 4K video resolutions (up from the current 720p and 1080i) with 10-bit versus 8-bit video, high dynamic range (HDR), wide color gamut (WCG), frame rates up to 120Hz from 60Hz, object-based 3D surround sound with up to 7.2.4 channels, and interactive and personalized content, including interactive advertising.

ATSC 3.0 also promises higher peak power output, improved error correction, and other techniques to improve coverage in a station’s market and improve in-building penetration for households with indoor antennas. Reception improves further if stations build a single-frequency network (SFN), which uses multiple broadcast antennas to fill in coverage gaps created by hills and other obstructions.

The products feature CTA’s NextGen TV logo to help consumers identify ATSC 3.0 products.

By the end of 2020, the broadcast industry expects TV stations in roughly more than 60 markets to have implemented the Internet Protocol (IP)-based 3.0 standard, including the top 40 markets by population.

...ATSC 3.0 also makes it possible for individual stations to deliver more channels than they currently do and enables robust reception by mobile devices and vehicles in motion.

Next Gen TV stations will also broadcast content using the current ATSC 1.0 standard incorporated in existing TVs...

...Gaming: Nvidia’s G-Sync technology, used in PC GPUs, appeared in select 4K OLEDs for the first time in late 2019 as a firmware upgrade, making LG the first TV maker to offer G-Sync. The feature expands in 2020 to most 4K OLEDs and to both 8K OLEDs.

In addition, AMD’s FreeSync technology for PC GPUs is being added to the G-Sync OLEDs as well as to all 8K and 4K NanoCell LCD TVs.

Both technologies adapt the TVs’ refresh rates to the frame rate of a game to eliminate flicker, tearing and stuttering, LG said.

In another nod to gamers, LG launched its first 48-inch 4K OLED TV, enabling gamers to take advantage of OLED’s input lag times as low as 13ms for 4K/60fps games...

...Also in audio, the company continues to offer Dolby Atmos decoding in all of its OLED and premium NanoCell LCD TVs along with WiSA-ready circuitry, which enables an optional connected dongle to send 5.1 surround sound wirelessly from the TVs to WiSA-enabled wireless powered speakers...

is that time of the year again where ces is here to introduce new electronics.  cool to know that some lg oled tvs will get next gen tv (atsc 3).  with next gen tv (atsc 3),  tv stations can broadcast up to 4k in 10 bit color and up to 120 fps (hz).  very cool. <3 <3 <3

most of 2020 lg oled tvs also get nvidia g-sync and amd freesync technologies.  Both technologies adapt the TVs’ refresh rates to the frame rate of a game to eliminate flicker, tearing and stuttering.  sounds cool. <3

for those that want a bit smaller tv set, lg also introduces 48" oled tv this year.  nice.  more selections for consumers.

i would like to see what the roll up oled tv will look like on the internet later today as ces starts today.

Vizio Unveils OLED, Readies Bigger, Brighter LCD TVs

Vizio introduced its first OLED TVs at CES while bolstering its 4K LCD TV lineup by raising full-screen brightness, launching its first 85-inch model, and bringing select HDMI 2.1 functions to 4K TVs for the first time, including eARC, auto low latency mode (ALLM) to quick-response video gaming, variable refresh rate (VRR) for smooth gaming and, in the OLED series and top LCD series, the ability to deliver 4K frame rates up to 120fps.

Vizio will also bring the UHD Alliance’s Filmmaker Mode to all 4K TVs, and the company is expanding the use of Samsung-developed HDR 10+ dynamic HDR, which appears in all 4K models in 2020 and joins dynamic Dolby Vision HDR as well as HDR 10 and HLG. HDR10+ was added as a software update in late 2019 to select Vizio 2019 and 2018 TVs...

...Before the show, Vizio didn’t say how many OLED TVs it would launch later this year, but the company did say its OLEDs would feature HDMI 2.1 features such as 4K/120Hz passthrough, variable refresh rate (VRR) and AMD’s FreeSync for smoother game play, a “borderless” design, a 4mm (0.16-inch) profile, and OLED’s advantages, including deep blacks and wide viewing angle...

Details of the company’s OLED launch were unavailable, but the company will join LG and Sony in selling OLED TVs in the U.S.

Here’s what else Vizio is talking up in TVs at CES:

Full-Screen Brightness: All quantum-dot LCD TVs get a full-screen brightness boost to enhance HDR performance, with “the most significant improvements” appearing in the M8, P9, and PX series, a spokesman said. Full-screen brightness goes to 800 nits in the PX series, 600 nits in the P9 series, 500 in the M8 series, and 350 in the M7 series. Last year’s full-screen brightness specs were unavailable.

“With the rapid increase of HDR content availability in the marketplace, full-screen brightness becomes a more important factor,” a spokesperson said.

Peak brightness, critical to HDR performance, also got a boost in the M8 series (to 800 nits from 600) and in the M7 series (to 600 from 400). The PX series continues to max out at 3,000 peak nits, and the P9 series continues to max out at 1,200 peak nits.

Size: The company unveiled its first 85-inch LCD TV, appearing in the flagship three-model P Series Quantum X series, and it continues to offer a trio of 75-inch TVs, one each in the PX, P9, and V5 series. The latter series also continues to offer a 70-inch screen.

Contrast: In the three-model flagship PX series, the number of contrast-enhancing back-lit local dimming zones goes up to 792 in the 85-inch screen size, up from a maximum 480 in the 2019 series’ 75-inch model and 384 in the 65-inch model. In 2020, the PX series retains the 75- and 65-inch sizes, but information was unavailable on their zone counts.

Like last year, the M8 series continues to max out at 90 zones, but the M7 series gets a slight upgrade to a maximum 30 zones from 20. The V5 series offers full-array LED lighting without local dimming.

Color gamut: Vizio continues to max out at 85% of the Rec. 2020 standard in 4K LCD TVs, with the number of models meeting that level growing from two SKUs in 2019 to three with the expansion of the PX series. P9 series coverage is close to 83% of Rec. 2020, with M series at around 80%, a spokesman said.

For reference, 100% of the widely quoted P3 standard equals about 73% of the Rec. 2020 standard.

HDMI 2.1: All 4K models get select HDMI 2.1 features, including eARC, ALLM, VRR and, in the PX and P9 series and OLED series, the ability to display 4K content at up to 120fps...

...Gaming Features: All quantum-dot models will feature a host of gaming-performance features dubbed ProGaming Engine. The features include variable refresh rate (VRR) to sync the TV’s refresh rate to the video game’s frame rate for smoother game play, AMD FreeSync VRR technology for use with computers and games incorporating FreeSync, and less-than 15ms input lag for quick response to commands. Vizio also developed an HDR tone-mapping curve exclusively for games to deliver a “more expansive dynamic range,” a spokesperson said.

The non-quantum-Dot V series features VRR and ALLM...

...ATSC 3.0: The company also said it is still “evaluating the right time” to include ATSC 3.0 (Next Gen TV) over-the-air TV tuners in its TVs, contending that it is meeting with TV broadcasters to learn about their ATSC 3.0 plans and pointing out the costs of implementation. Vizio has “to look at overall value” in adding features, said John Hwang, VP of hardware product management.

ATSC 3.0 broadcasts will support 1080p and 4K video resolutions (up from the current 720p and 1080i), 10-bit versus 8-bit video, HDR, wide color gamut (WCG), frame rates up to 120Hz from 60Hz, object-based 3D surround sound with up to 7.2.4 channels, and — because the standard is based on the Internet Protocol — interactive and personalized content, including interactive advertising.

its cool to know vizio is launching oled tvs this year beside lg and sony.  not only that but all of vizio oled tvs and some led-lcd tvs will have hdmi 2.1 supports which features allm, vrr, and 4k120.  very nice.  not to mention that its oled tvs also support amd freesync too.

while vizio non-oled led-lcd tv top of the line quantum px series can get as bright as 800 nits for the whole entire screen and up to 3,000 nits of brightness for part of its screen.  that is very, very bright.  very nice. <3

if i remember correctly, last year's model peak's brightness is only around 2,500 nits for part of its screen and this year, they up the total brightness to 3,000 which is a 500 nits increase.  cool. B)

while step down model p series have a maximum full screen brightness of 600 nits and part of it screen up to 1,200 nits which is still very cool.  another step down model, the m8 series has a maximum brightness of 500 nits for full screen and 800 nits for part of it screen.  the step down model after that, the m7 has a maximum of 350 nits of full screen brightness and a maximum 600 nits for part of it screen.  which are very nice. B)

For the px led-lcd series, it can produce color up to 85% of Rec 2020 standard, while the regular p series can produce up to 83% and m series only around 80%.  That is still very impressive comparing to p3 standard color space which only cover around 73% of rec 2020 standard.

Samsung Expands 8K Lineup, Unveils Rotating 4K TV

Samsung is bringing 8K UHD displays and color-enhancing quantum-dot technology to lower price points in a 2020 TV lineup that features more 8K models, more choices of big-screen sizes measuring 70 and 80 or more inches, new contrast-enhancing LCD technologies, and new TV-audio enhancements.
At CES, the company is also expanding its décor-oriented 4K Frame and Serif TV selection and launching its first TV targeted to so-called “mobile natives,” incorporating screen mirroring and a motorized rotating 4K display that can be viewed in landscape or portrait mode (shown above)...

...In large modular Micro-LED displays, Samsung has over the past two years pioneered the development of MicroLED technology as the next generation of displays. New advancements for 2020 have allowed for larger-scale production of fixed screen sizes, including new 88-, 93-, 110-, and 150-inch sizes (in addition to prior years’ 75-, 146-, and 219-inch screens). And as seen in a new 292-inch iteration of The Wall, MicroLED’s uniquely modular structure and sleek design allow for an unparalleled and customizable entertainment experience. From production to installation, Samsung’s MicroLED technology will transform our expectations for the experience of owning a TV.

Prices weren’t disclosed.

Here are some of the key developments in Samsung’s AV plans:

8K UHD:...One new 8K series, the Q950TS, features a “virtually-no-bezel” design with 2.3mm (0.09-inch) bezel, helping the TV blend in with a room’s décor. Like other Samsung TVs, the Q950TS series also features décor-blending ambient mode, allowing the TV to reproduce the color and pattern of the wall behind it when off or display artwork or patterns.

The TV’s depth is only 15mm (0.59 inches) from top to bottom, allowing for flush mounting to the wall with the company’s no-gap wall mount.

...LCD Contrast: Samsung is implementing new technologies to improve the contrast performance of LCD TVs. A new power-distribution technology controls LED brightness and enables smaller groups of full-array local dimming (FALD) backlights to be controlled. It allows for up to 20% higher brightness in smaller areas. Appearing only in 8K models, the power-distribution technology also reduces halos around bright objects on black backgrounds.

In select 4K series, the company is delivering better control of blue-light leakage that reduces off-axis viewing angles and contrast, thanks to a hardware rather than firmware implementation of color-temperature control, a spokesman said. Consumers choose cool, normal, or warm color temperatures to reduce the amount of blue light...

...“Mobile Native” TV: In a first for Samsung, the 43-inch 4K Sero TV (shown in opening photo) features a rotating motorized display designed for “mobile natives” who watch a lot of content on mobile devices. The screen of the floor-standing TV rotates from landscape to portrait mode to display content mirrored from an Android or Apple device. Speakers are in the stand. Wheels are optional. The TV comes with 500MB of storage for pictures, and it displays visual patterns that interpret the sound of music playing.

Other New Features: The company is adding eARC, an HDMI 2.1 feature, to TVs for the first time, along with an improved universal guide combining linear TV and streaming content...
https://www.soundandvision.com/content/samsung-expands-8k-lineup-unveils-rotating-4k-tv

Nice to know samsung this year manage to increase the screen size of its MicroLed up to 292 inch big, compares to 219 inch a year prior.  Also nice to know is one of samsung 8k tvs nearly has no bezel on the sides of the tv.  the tv depth is only 15 mm which is very thin but still pales in comparison to oled tvs from lg where its get as thin as 4 mm.

While the mobile native tv can be rotate to landscape or portrait screen for people who watches a lot of mobile videos that were recorded in portrait mode so they can rotate the tv to portrait mode for it.  in my opinion, this tv is more of a gimmick though.

it doesn't really says if these samsung 2020 tvs come equipped with hdmi 2.1 though but it does says it did implement eARC which is one of hdmi 2.1 features to its 2020 tvs.  Beside that, i don't know if these 2020 sets really include hdmi 2.1 other features like 4k120, vrr, allm, and g-sync or free sync though.  if it does includes those like 4k120 and vrr, it might has real hdmi 2.1 connections.

Konka Prepares to Conquer the Western TV World

Chinese manufacturer Konka has been a regular exhibitor at CES for years. What’s different about the company’s presence at this particular CES is they are showing a number of new TVs destined for sale in the U.S. and Canada in 2020.
The company’s U5 and Q7 Series 4K LCD TVs range in size from 43 to 75 inches and in price from $400 to $1,200. They are also showing X11 Series 4K OLED TVs with 55- and 65-inch screens. The company’s LCD offerings are differentiated by the inclusion of Quantum dots in the Q7 Series, while its OLED TVs feature a clever built-in soundbar that runs the full width of the TV’s bottom bezel. All LCD and OLED models are powered by Android TV.

Konka is apparently prepping plenty of other display products for future release, including LCD TVs with mini-LED backlights and 8K LCD and OLED sets. The company was also showing 236-inch 8K and 118-inch 4K MicroLED walls in its booth at CES. While these are currently aimed at the commercial market, a Konka rep said the company, which recently announced its investment in a research institute to promote the technology, plans to bring MicroLED displays to the consumer market in the next 3-5 years.

its cool konka is going to sell their tvs to u.s. and canada.  especially their oled tvs which sound like its coming out this year in u.s. and canada.

also very cool that they are making microLED screens and one in 236" size in 8k and one in 118" in 4k for commercial market.  very cool it might come to consumer market in north america in the next 3 to 5 years from now. B)

LG’s New 48-Inch OLED TV’s Got Game

LG’s massive OLED TV rollout at CES 2020 includes the company’s smallest OLED yet: the 48-inch CX series model. And while the new baby OLED is packed with all the other features found in other models from the company, including 4K resolution, a9 Gen 3 AI processor, Dolby Vision HDR, and HDMI 2.1 connectivity, its gaming features are what the company chose to highlight in its CES booth.
What makes LG’s 48-inch CX series model good for gaming? Along with the smaller screen, which essentially makes it an oversize computer monitor, it supports NVIDIA’s G-sync and AMD’s FreeSync technology to reduce picture tearing and flicker during gameplay, and it also features HGiG mode, which was developed by the HDR Gaming Interest Group to create something of an HDR display standard for gaming.

As with the other LG OLEDs at CES, pricing hasn’t yet been announced, but if past history is an indication, we should start to see the new sets roll out in spring.
https://www.soundandvision.com/content/lg-s-new-48-inch-cx-series-oled-tv-s-got-game

nice to see lg oled tv giving consumers options to pick which size tv they want to buy by adding a tv option that is smaller than 55".  48" TV is a bit too small for my bedroom though, and i am planning on getting 55" OLED tv for my bedroom this year.  But is good to have 48" as another option for people where space is constraint in their rooms.
