When it\'s coming out, if it\'s gonna have the hitting challenge again (where you can hit in the house and stuff)?I am really hoping that it will come out soon for the PS2.

Triple Play Baseball

Do 20 new high-res shots of the A\'s and Braves get you excited? Then come over and check them out.

February 9, 2001

Let\'s face the facts. If it weren\'t for EA Sports, the PlayStation 2 wouldn\'t have been nearly as anticipated and sought after as it was this past holiday season. The sales of Madden NFL 2001, its flagship next-generation football title, nearly doubled that of the second best selling game on the system in 2000, which was Namco\'s Tekken Tag Tournament. And if that\'s not staggering enough, EA Sports\' name was on three of the top four selling games on the system (Madden, SSX and NHL 2001) and the company shipped respectable titles for soccer, NASCAR and Formula One. EA Sports was by far the biggest publisher for the PS2 in 2000, and sports gamers everywhere should expect this to continue through 2001, as the company is already gearing up for the release of its first PS2 baseball game in Triple Play Baseball (it\'s no longer being called Triple Play 2002 -- that\'ll be next year\'s version).
In EA Sports\' first PS2 baseball game, the company is continuing its baseball dynasty with the hopes of bringing it to all new levels. For one, the company is confident that it will be able to add new intelligence levels to the game by demonstrating a sort of player urgency for players that are near the ball for throwing, catching and fielding. We don\'t really know how this works in the game right now, but it definitely sounds like a good idea.

Additionally, the game\'s developers have also decided to try and create a better feeling of being at a real ball game. While they won\'t be able to simulate a drunk fan spilling his beer on you and not even caring about it, the game does boast some brand new cinematic out-of-play sequences that should allow players to feel like they\'re at a real game. These sequences will include scripted animations of umpire arguments, high-fives, and end-of-game celebrations.

Triple Play Baseball will also have all of the same features that you\'ve come to expect in a sports game produced by EA Sports. The game has the customary Major League Baseball and MLBPA licenses, so it has all of the teams and players that are in the major leagues. It even has the signature batting and pitching styles of some of the league\'s biggest stars.

And for those of you looking for something that\'s not conventional in all sports games, Triple Play Baseball features the exclusive rights to the MLBPA Big League Challenge that\'s set in Las Vegas\' Cashman Field. This is an event that let\'s today\'s greats see who can go furthest the most often, and the play mode in the game let\'s the game\'s users do the same. This mode includes all 12 MLB participants in the tournament mode.

Regular gameplay offers a couple of new ideas, including two new camera angles, which include Fielding and Pitcher/Batter cameras and depth of field effects for more precise angles on the play and of the ball. There\'s also a brand new pitcher/batter interface with a visible strike zone, pitching cursor and batting cursor and fine tuned fielding control with semi-automatic control including one-button throws to a particular base. And for those looking for something that hasn\'t been done on any other console, the throwing in Triple Play Baseball will make use of the Dual Shock 2\'s pressure sensitive buttons by allowing the player to control the speed and power by how hard they press the face buttons on the controller.

The game should also appeal to the graphic whores in each and every one of us, as it promises to be one of the most realistic looking sports games around. The player models appear quite realistic and they have accurate player frames that have various shapes and sizes for the body and the head. You won\'t get the bug-eyed freaks that we saw in Madden and more than 150 of the players will have their real-life facial textures. Some of the most notable stars that have been scanned include Oakland\'s Jason Giambi, San Francisco\'s Barry Bonds, and New York\'s Derek Jeter.

The stars aren\'t the only ones that have been recreated to perfection in this game, either. The developers have also gone ahead and recreated all 30 major league stadiums in precise detail according to their actual blueprints. The stadiums will all look just like the real thing and will have realtime scoreboards and in-park animations including Miller Park and PNC Park.

Triple Play Baseball will also make use of PS2\'s power by offering realtime lighting and reflections to help bring some added realism to the title. While things like realistic lighting for day, dusk, and night games, realtime shadows and reflections don\'t really affect gameplay that much, there\'s no denying the impact that this kind of stuff had in making games like Madden feel and look more life-like -- this should be even more apparent in Triple Play Baseball.

Last, but not least, the game should offer some excellent play-by-play, as new scripts and recordings have been made by Sean McDonough and Buck Martinez. The two-man team will hopefully offer fresh, accurate and true-to-life performance.

Unlike what happened with football, soccer, and hockey, it actually looks like EA Sports will actually have some strong competition on the baseball front. Acclaim\'s All Star Baseball 2002 and 3DO\'s High Heat Baseball 2002 already appear to be promising, and the chances are quite good that 989 Sports\' MLB 2002 won\'t be as disappointing as the company\'s early efforts on PS2. However, if EA Sports\' track record means anything, they\'re the ones that are on top and they\'re the champs until someone knocks them out.

Triple Play Baseball is currently scheduled to ship this spring and many retail outlets are listing it as a March 13, 2001. It will be priced at $39.95 and Treyarch is handling the game\'s development.
