Just had to post this one. as I love lucasarts classics.

I want just to start a conversation, just like faithdies did with sierra-games. What do you think of the LA classics? Wich is your favourite?

Here\'s some LA classics I love, and still play somedays.
Secret of Monkey Island
Secret of Monkey Island: LeChuck\'s Revenge
Star Wars X-wing
Star Wars Tie-Fighter
Sam\'n\'Max Hit the Road
Full Throttle
Loom
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade ( adventure edition )
and many more I just can\'t remember right now...

Especially I remember with warmth the Monkey Island saga and Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis. They speak for themselves. I know you\'ve heard of them.

A classic moment from SoMI: Walk Guybrush to the sea from the kitchen of the Scumm-bar, stay in the water for 10 minutes and guybrush turns green and, very likely, dies; as you can\'t move afterwards. This is the only way to die in Secret of Monkey Island.

And there\'s another way to TRY dying; on Monkey Island. Go top to the cliff and jump down ( there\'s possibility to do this ); then comes a screen copied straight from sierra-games: [restart] [restore] ( or something like that ), and those famous words: ( something like )"oops, you died. restore game". Then when you restore, a famous text comes to screen: But you can\'t die in a lucasarts game. And so the guybrush jumps back to the cliff.

I don\'t know was that a sarcastic joke from lucasarts, or just respect towards sierra \'tho :)

Monkey Island 2 = the best adventure game ever, well, on par with Sam & Max Hit the road.

And to clarify things in that quote, he just didn\'t "jump" back. It was a rubber tree. I laughed my ass off back then. Especially at the Sierra selection box, hilarious. Nice one Ron (or whoever came up with that gag) :)

Also, did you know that the fabulous bone dance in MI2 (where Guybrush meets his parents) was just a tinker one of the programmers came up with during lunch break? When the other team members saw it they decided to add it to the game.

Also, have you noticed that many of LucasArts\' pre-Sam\'n\'Max adventures had Sam & Max appearing in them? In the original Monkey Island, by the big Monkey head (remember the key? Harhar ), there are little Sam and Max idols on the ground amongst the others. And in Day of the Tentacle (shame on you Joyda for not mentioning this) they\'re found in the upper hallway of the past, in the paintings decorating the walls.

Also, in Shadows of the Empire, in the ending credits it reads :
"Wompa training and supervision done by Sam & Max"

There were some references elsewhere too (in an Indy game I think) but I can\'t rememeber them at the moment.

Immortal quotes from Sam\'n\'Max :
Sam: "This place reeks of adventure and excitement, Sam!"
Sam: "I thought that was this tuna fish sandwich I found crawling with life in my coat pocket."

Moleman: "Well, it all started the day before today.  I remember it just like
    it was yesturday."

    Sam: Aww... It\'s a cute hypersufflic(sp?) kitten.
Max: I\'ll call him mittens cause I think he\'d make a fine pair of them.

(Sam holding the timebomb disguised as an ugly head)
Sam: "Where should we put this thing so that it doesn\'t hurt anyone we know or care about?"
Max: "Out the window, Sam.  There\'s nobody but strangers out there."
    *BOOM!*
Sam: Hope there was nobody on that bus.

Sam: My little buddy here needs to use the facilities.
Max: Facilities be damned! I need a bathroom!!!!

    [/list]

They made the best games back then... oh the days... I loved those games and still do. If not, I don\'t think I would\'ve seen the trouble to write all this :p

Oh sorry! I truly forgot Maniac Mansions! Sorry, they\'re as well classics and really good ones.

Oh yes, it was a rubber-tree, Hawke; thanks for reminding :)

And yes I\'ve seen those idols and such, but I didn\'t realize Day of the Tentacle was done BEFORE Sam\'n\'Max!

I love the little details on the Lucasarts adventure-games. Such as little carvings of Lucas-arts logo in Atlantis\'s walls on Indinana Jones and the Fate of atlantis..

    Favourite, and famous, Monkey Island insults ( should I say \'Classic\' :) ) :

    Curse of the Monkey Island:

Insult: Every enemy I\'ve met I\'ve annihilated!
Answer: With your breath, I\'m sure they all suffocated.

Insult: You\'re as repulsive as a monkey in a negligee.
Answer: I look THAT much like your fiancée?

    Insult: En garde! Touché!
Answer: Oh, that is so cliché!

Insult: When your father first saw you, he must have been mortified.
Answer: At least mine can be identified.

Insult: I can\'t rest until you\'ve been exterminated!
Answer: Then perhaps you should switch to decaffeinated.

Insult: You\'re the ugliest monster ever created.
Answer: If you don\'t count all the ones you\'ve dated.

Insult: I\'ll hound you night and day!
Answer: Then be a good dog. Sit! Stay!

Insult: I have never seen such clumsy swordplay!
Answer: You would have, but you were always running away.

    Secret of Monkey Island

Insult: I once owned a dog that was smarter than you.
Answer: He must have taught everything you know.

Insult: Nobody\'s ever drawn blood from me and nobody ever will!
    Answer: You run THAT fast?

Insult: You make me want to puke.
Answer: You make me think somebody already did.

Insult: I got this scar on my face during a mighty struggle!
Answer: I hope now you\'ve learned to stop picking your nose.

Insult: I\'ve spoken with apes more polite than you.
Answer: I\'m glad to hear you attended your family reunion.

Insult: Have you stopped wearing diapers yet?
Answer: Why, did you want to borrow one?

Insult: You have the manners of a beggar.
Answer: I wanted to make sure you\'d feel comfortable with me.

Insult: There are no words for how disgusting you are.
Answer: Yes there are. You just never learned them.

Insult: You\'re no match for my brains, you poor fool.
Answer: I\'d be in real trouble if you ever used them.

Insult: I\'m not going to take your insolence sitting down!
Answer: Your hemorrhoids are flaring up again, eh?

Insult: I\'ve heard you were a contemptible sneak.
Answer: Too bad no one\'s ever heard of YOU at all.

Insult: You fight like a dairy farmer.
Answer: How appropriate. You fight like a cow.

    Ah, the memories... *sniff*

I really miss those sort of games. Lucasarts has made some of the finest games EVER released. The M.I. series is pure brilliance. :)

LucasArts (or LucasFilm as it was called back then) made some of the very best Adventure games. I didn\'t get a chance to play many of them until just a few years ago when I had a job and the cash to buy them. Sierra was just pumping out too many great adventures for my allowance to stay steady enough for me to buy them. I just wish I had known about them back in the day.

Still, I\'m having a lot of fun replaying all the great LucasArts games.. really reminds me of the old days. The humor is distinctly different from Sierra\'s, but also some of the funniest I\'ve heard (er, read?). Their games were also so much more polished than Sierra\'s.. If they were able to pump them out with the same regularity Sierra, I might have had a different childhood favorite. :D In fact, the game engine LucasArts created for Monkey Island 1 was used in quite a few adventures of the time.. including the less well known Legend of Kyrandia series from Virgin Interactive.

The only thing that dissapointed me about the LucasArts games WAS the almost total inability to die. Some of the funniest gaming moments I\'ve had was searcing around the area to find all the funny, and sometimes downright insulting ways to die. Ever forget to take off your rubber after visiting the hooker in LSL1? How about deleting the SQIV icon on Vohaul\'s computer in SQIV (Dumps you back into Dos with no warning.. well.. what did you expect, you deleted the game!)

Now that one "Sierra" style dying bit in Monkey Island 1 was probably a respectful elude to Sierra\'s games. Little jokes like these are burried thought two companies different series. One example is when yer at Erasmus\'s house on Zaumberburg in the Quest for Glory 1 Remake. Before you can enter the house the gargoyle will ask you a few questions, one of them being "What is your Quest?" If you choose the answer "I want to be a Pirate!", he\'ll say something along the lines of "You want a different game. Try Monkey Island by LucasArts."

Oh, and by the way... Ask me about Loom. :D

Loom is about odd Heretic. It\'s quite good but I haven\'t played it trough yet.

I just got hold on the latest Monkey Island game; Escape from Monkey Island. As it is very good, it just doesn\'t fit into the classic M.I. games era ( where the two greatest M.I. games stand; the first and the second one in the serie ). But I still recommend EMI to anyone who\'s a pure Monkey Island fanatic. Others should avoid.

There\'s many inside-jokes and easter eggs in Monkey Island games. I don\'t want to spoil them \'tho :) Find them out. It\'s funny.

BTW. I have loom on my computer :)

And the Scumm engine was created for Maniac Mansion first. Then it was used in many LucasArts games, and I agree that it\'s one of the BEST Adventure-game engines ever. It\'s fast and easy-to-use and the graphics are nice...

Hmmm... I know Grim Fandango doesn\'t really include to LA old classics ( yet ), but let me ask thy\'; is it worth a buy if I could find it somewhere?

I\'ve had lots of positive replies about the game, but let me ask it again still.

I\'ve played the demo, and I kinda liked it. But is it humorous and hard, aka Monkey Island -style?

( BTW. off from adventure-games. I think we can add this great game to LA classics and have a discussion about it.. )

    Dark Forces

Star wars blaster, and really good one. One of the best SW games there still is. Anyone played this classic?

YES! It is awesome. The new Monkey Island game uses the same engine as Gim. It also has the best music In a game ever imo. Truly great. I think you can get it off amazon.com for about $20. Definately worth it.

    -Day of the Tentacle
    -Sam and Max
    -Indaiana Jone: Fate of Atlantis
    -Curse of Monkey Island

    ah, Curse of Monkey Island.

Glad you brought it up Gohan ( or I did, when I mentioned those insults :) ). I think it\'s time to crown the game as classic. It\'s so good. But I completed it in about 2 weeks... Too quickly, if considering I didn\'t even play it every day, and in short periods. But it was GOOD. Very.

I especially loved the plot. It was good, and there still was many things to explore. And I loved Murray, and love him still. He\'s the greatest character on MI-history!

But the ending was a disappointment; I truly waited for something more. But, alas, you can\'t get everything you want so I\'m quite happy with it still.

what is your favourite moment, Gohan? Mine probaply is the chat with Murray in the Tomb. Creepy. :)
