HELP Final Fantasy IX on PS2

I own a PS2 and have just bought FF9. It runs perfectly on the PS2 but can\'t detect the memory card? Kind of impossible to play without the possibility to save, so i hope anyone of you guys know the solution? buy a PS1 MC, format in another way or....

PS1 games can only be saved on PS1 Mem. cards.

Yeah you need a PS1 memory card for PS1 games.

My PS2 didn\'t detect my first PS1 memory card which was worrying but it detected the other two I owned so I assume it was the memory card and not the console. Also the memory card it couldn\'t detect was 3rd party.

Why in the world would Sony put usefull information in the PS2 manual. If they did that anyopne oculd just look in thier themselves and solve thier own problem.
