How is Sega still alive?

I hav been wondering this for a while, how is Sega still alive?  They have gone year after year losing millions and millions of dollars, yet, they still have enough money to make a large software business.  Where are they getting their money from?  How is it possible for a company to lose that much money and still be around?

BTW, I have nothing against Sega.  I am just wondering how this is possible.

You\'re not alone man.  I\'ve been saying the same thing for years.  Every time their console fails they don\'t do the smart thing like wait for technology to catch up.  Instead they use existing technology to  make a "super" sytstem ex: 32x, Saturn, and DC.  Which is ultimately inferior to the other companies like nintendo and whosoever else who actually spent some time in R&D and developed techology and waited for advancements.  And Sega also has that problem of not supporting their systems expecially in America that\'s one of the main factor\'s contributing to the Saturn\'s unfortunate Death:(  I miss it.  Like all companies Sega still has a lot of stock and franchises it can live off of.  So I guess they\'ll never go away as long as someone keeps buying their stuff.  Atleast they\'ve finally got it right and become a 3rd party developer.  This way if they screw up they can blame to problems on the console developers for a change:D

software sale\'s. that\'s the only thing keeping them afloat that\'s way there going multi console.

Sega is backed by the HUGE company CSK. They have oodles of cash.

It is partially software sales but not only. One of the reasons they are backing out of the hardware biz is because of the lack of support from japanese consumers. Meaning not only were they not buying consoles they weren\'t buying games. Sega unfortunately became a niche market.

BTW, I think Sega will eventually come out with another console.

As far as I know Sega makes most of it\'s money from arcades and software sales.Sega will probly launch a new console.And since they have been having a good relationship with Sony lately I think it would be cool if Sega was a part of the PS.3 team.(Well I think that would be cool)

What makes you think that Sega\'s relationship with Sony is any better than their relationship with Nintendo or Microsoft?

Methinks a lot of people are gonna be shocked after E3 this year.

Well they\'re helping to make the broadband thingie.Making lot\'s of games etc..
Have they made any announcment about games on the X-Box? I haven\'t seen one,but there\'s probly something.

Sega is still alive because of dedicated gamers like me.

We are the ones who support them even when they were no longer considered "cool".

As long as there are gamers like me, Sega will always be around in one form or another.

Isao Okawa, the nicest Blillionare alive He donated I think 85 billion yen worth of his own stock to pay for Sega\'s losses.

I think CSK will be happy that they have invested greatly into Sega when they become the most profitable company around third party.

Then after the videogame crash, which I think is another reason Sega got out of the console market, Sega will make a new console to bring back the glory days much like the NES of old (although I hope Sega will do it without all the illegal monopoly crap that Nintendo used) .

DC was very much ahead of current technoloy, as every system of theirs has been. Saturn was a multi processor system, very ahead of it\'s time (see: PS2), CD based system (barely after the Turbo CD), Genesis (true 16bit), Master System (twice the speed of NES, as fast as SNES), etc. Sega develops a smart system, but it is always over shadowed by a more powerful system that will come out much later than theirs. the DC was out a year and a half before PS2.

They also worked off of the huge surplus from their yahoo 16bit money making days!

You always mention this. What happened with Nintendo and Sega during the 8bit generation? I guess I was too young to know. Please explain. Thanks

I think what Sega always does wrong with their Systems (well since the Saturn anyway) they are the first when releasing a next gen console,then the next company comes along and over shadowes it.

yup no-one, that is basically correct.

Gohan: Nintendo made all third part developers to sign an agreement that if they made games for NES, they made games ONLY for NES. Also, the developers had to make between 2 to 6 games a year. that is why there were many crappy games for NES in america. Activision and one ofther company were the only third parties that the SMS had in America! and you thought N64 was bad! that is why SMS and Atari 7800 died in America.

This was only done by NoA.

In Europe and South America, the SMS killed NES. Flat out spanked it. In fact, they were still actively making and selling SMS games up until 1995, when the Saturn and such were released! In Brazil and other parts of SA, SMS also held the market, games, including a VERY good versions of Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat 1,2,3, etc! ALso SOnic 1,2, Blast, and Chaos were all made, plus Virtua Fighter Animation!

Nintendo was brought to the Supreme Court by Sega, Atari, and others, and were made to dispell the agreement. But by that time, Atari 7800 had died, and SMS was on the way out for Genesis to start it\'s ass-kicking.


By all means, SMS should have won in America, they graphics were better, the games were on ratio better, the speed was twice as fast, etc! This, and the kiddy thing, are the reason I hate Nintendo.

Man I loved my SMS. I don\'t even remember where I got it but I know that only 2 other people had it. It NEVER had any problems and the games were almost ALL classics. I ended up getting an NES because it had more games. I never knew anything about a monopoly or shady business tactics. You learn something new everyday. I always thought that the card that the SMS used was one of the coolest ideas of all time. It was way ahead of its time.

Just one more reason to hate Nintendo .  j/k.  This is also new info to me.

ypu, now you guys see why I have a certain bad taste for Nintendo in my mouth.

about 10 people had SMS on my block, I guess it was just the popular system where we were! We had the better version of Rampage, Double Dragon (2 player!), amongst others!

We had an NES first, actually, we got one after our Atari 2600 broke. The NES broke about 2 years after we got it, so we got an SMS, and we were very happy we did!
