Playstation 2 to hard to handle?
« on: April 02, 2001, 04:55:19 PM »
I was looking at my playstation 2 like I do everyday for an hour and I got to thinking, "Is this a system that the younger audience can handle"? Now im talking about the system itself, not the games or something else you thought I was trying to make a point on. It seems to me that a 10-11 year old wouldnt know how to operate the machine properly. Most of us are use to the "Insert game, turn on, and play", but now the PS2 seems like it would be too hard for any parent or non-computer literate person. Now, this is the first system i\'ve seen (besides sega cd and I think 3DO) that has a tray for the cd/game load. Little kids could easily break that off! I know that sony was going for a "computer" system, rather than a console. Also, I think that another problem is the stand by and main power options. PS2 has 2 power sources!  Another thing, a little kid wont know what a browser and system configuration is. The PSone had POWER and RESET in big letters (kinda) and only 2 buttons. Now, im not bashing, I love my PS2, im just a little concernd for the younger audience and whether it was a smart move by Sony. I also dont know how/if that will effect the outcome of the console wars. What do you think?

its not ment for kids, thats why the power o/- is at the back of the macine. Ps2, dc and xbox  is for teens and adults, while the cube is for younger audience

When I was 11 I was reading Joseph Conrad.

Most 11 year olds nowadays are very computer/technology savy. Pushing a button to open up the CD tray and then putting in a CD is not rocket science. I really don\'t think it\'s an issue.

I guess for children under 9 or 8 this might be something they might break or mistreat but, as MGRay pointed out most kids that age don\'t want a PS2 or a PSX, they want Pokemon.

My thoughts exactly.  Kids are so used to using the cdrom on their PCs that I doubt it would be difficult for them to use the PS2.  Two of my cousins are under 8 years old and have been using PCs for years.

i really dont think that would be much of a problem to kids that are young.. i think the parents would usually read the instructions, so they wont feel left behind by their kid. my little brother-8 pretyy much had no trouble handling it, but there shoouldve been a power button  on in the front. my parents just dont know how to turn it off!!
IM BACK. you have a problem with that? get in the back.

Sony isn\'t targeting the younger audience.  You can tell that by the price, games, and DVD player.  Average age for PS2 is probably 16-25, that\'s their core.  It\'s best they stayed focused.  Besides, Nintendo owns the kids...

Hiw dificult is the system?  You push a button, a tray opens.  You set the disc in.  You push the button to close it.  Your game loads.  What in the world are you talking about?

My dog plays Madden 2001 all the time when I am not home.  I hate it when he goes and tries to play my franchise.  He\'s not very good.

Lavan hit the nail on the head.  You\'re not giving enough credit to youngsters.  I\'ve got a 10 year old that does it all... plays videogames (NHL and Madden even), uses computer (online too) programs the VCR, operates my stereo (which isn\'t the easiest thing to manage sometimes) and even tells me when I\'ve left my turn signal on!
