Control ports...Why only 2?

If Sony added 2 more controller ports, they would also have to add the m/c slots to go with them. This would upset the design and increase the cost.

The design wouldn\'t significantly change if two more ports were added. Also, 2 more m/c slots wouldn\'t nessaccarly be needed. The system that I\'m extremely excited about right now has only two m/c slots and four controller ports( no its not the Xbox).

They are already taking a loss on hardware. Alot of people, including the media were bit*ing about the $299 price tag. With the extra ports and m/c slots either Sony would have to take an even bigger loss per unit, or the price would have been jacked up to $330-$350.

And that\'s what you get for making a flawed piece of technology...

But seriously, you can only blame Sony for that. Incase you haven\'t notice yet, the PS2 isn\'t exactly a break through in technological advances. They goofed up. No vram, EE works like a sweat shop kid, it\'s pretty messed up. I guess they couldn\'t of added two more controller ports because the system is too...well...****ed up as it is. Blame Sony for making a extremely high priced machine.

It was a sound financial, business decision, and also had statistical backing due to the lack of 4 player support in both game titles and users.

Je ne comprend pas...

....And besides, Sony doesn\'t even have a multitap available yet, do they?? It\'s the third party manufacturers like Pelican, and Interact that are making money off of Sony\'s (right) decision.

Yeah I completely take back what I said earlier about Sony milking their fans for money.

But still, they should of done a better job with the PS2 itself. Then they probably could of included two more controller ports and that would be beneficial to their fans.

The answer is simple.  Sony profits more from making us buy a multi-tap.  It\'s impractical in this day and age to release a console without four controller ports.  Yeah I guess a 4-player split screen game would be no fun......if you were playing on a 13inch TV.  Sports games don\'t even need to split the screen up when playing multiplayer.  Also, the main reason a lot of games don\'t support over 2 players on the PS2 is because it didn\'t come with 4 ports, so the developers figure it\'s a waste of time.  4 player games can be a whole lot of fun.  It\'s a damn shame that I have to give Sony more of my money just to plug 2 more controllers into my PS2.  Hmmm, I wouldn\'t be suprised if they also intentionally made it so the PSone multi-tap wouldn\'t work with the PS2.

I\'m not sure whether you meant that in jest or not, regardless, of course Sony is a cash loving company - they\'re not in it for the love of the games, and neither are Sega, nor Nintendo - in the end it\'s all about money. Sony thought they could make a few bucks selling us multitaps if they just took out two controller ports.

I love 4 player sports games (ISS Pro Evolution rocks), and I\'ve bought a PS2 multitap. Sure I would have preferred 4 controller ports, but in the end Sony sold the PS2 for a loss as it is so I can understand why they wanted to make some dough. Besides, with a multi-tap you can play with more than 4 players - I\'ve played 5 player NHL FaceOff 2001 (the better PSX version) and Fifa 98.

Eh?
I don\'t know about you, but if I ever play games online with my ps2, it doesn\'t mean I will stop having 3 friends over to play.  Online Gaming is no substitute for gaming in person with your buddies and socializing.

heck..4 player games will become useless once ps2 goes online :)

No 4 player wont become useless because i have friends that i love to play on timesplitters but dont have a ps2 so i play them on 4 player, and the connection better be broadband or everyone will get pissed off quick

you miss understood me, it would be very stupid to toss the multi-tap aside when i spent 35 bucks on it, i meant that once on-line gaming arrives  I really wouldnt want to play with my friends, when I can play with people all over the world, and my outlook on friends is different, i have no friends... the only people i use the multi tap with is my little bro, my girlfriend, and maybe 1 or 2 of my brothers friends, im sure you have plenty of friends so you will be using it more often, its just my outlook on it. now do you understand

Well Jumpman, I guess you just have a different opinion. Seems you offered a completely opposite opinion on every line of my post. Oh well.

There will always be those who feel ripped off because Sony didn\'t custom tailor to their desires.

And no, I\'m not "defending Sony at any cost" as someone inferred earlier, I just am not so arrogant as to pretend to know Sony\'s intentions. The design they have for the PS2 is theirs, and if consumers don\'t care for it, it won\'t sell well.

Do y\'all really think that their marketing people were sitting with their fingers up their noses? If their research showed a majority, even slight, that wanted 4 ports, they more than likely would have designed the PS2 to suit them.

Sony\'s a business, not your spongeable freind. Sega, Nintendo, and all the others are businesses too, and they want your money just the same.

......Anyway, my guess is that if the PS2 did have 4 ports Sony would just get accused of stealing someone elses idea....like they always do.

Jesus, guys, this is pretty much a non-issue, isn\'t it?  Not everybody plays four-player games.  The PSX did very well for itself without doing much to accomodate four players.  It\'s not like you can\'t play 4-player games, though...just buy a freakin\' Multi-tap!  It\'s really not that big a deal.  Again, this is an issue where some of you just act like the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons; you just don\'t like anything.  If you want 4 players, shell out a little and quit *****ing.  I did, and I don\'t feel cheated.  Still a little puzzled why people who don\'t seem to like anything PS2 would build up hundreds of posts on a PS2 board...some of you must truly have nothing else going on...
