Sky Odyssey First Impression / Mini Review (UK PAL)
« on: May 03, 2001, 09:30:47 AM »
Hi, after doing my review of Gun Griffon Blaze i\'d thought i\'d do a Sky Odyssey review since it landed on my doorstep this morning.

First thing a word about where I got it from. I got it from http://www.infront.co.uk which is basically "Streets Online" they do DVDs, Games etc. I paid £31.99 for it which is a saving of £8. However it took them ages, after ordering on friday morning the day it came out they only despatched on tuesday meaning i got it on thrusday, nearly a whole week. So prehaps EB would have been better.

Anyway onto the game.

Sky Odyssey is classed as flight adventure, a flight sim without the weapons and enermies but instead some serious, more relastic and equally dangourous missions set over 4 unexplored islands.

If you have read any reviews of this game at all you will already know that its been compared to Pilot Wings and that theres some cool missions like refueling from a moving train and flying through caves.

So what can I tell which you may of not heard about before.

Well for starters it seems like a fun game and the graphics in my opinion are decent even though some reviewers have critised them. I\'ve heard of slowdown problems yet only seen them once.

Two other nice things was that this game includes a 50 / 60 Hz option and a screen centering function. Nice one! One strange thing however is although it saves the options you set it doesn\'t save the screen position meaning it needs to be set each time you load the game.

Is the game fun ?

Too right it is, don\'t be put off by the so called lack of action and more sim style gameplay. If you like fun games you will like this. I by no means are a flight sim person, infact this is the first ever one i\'ve owned and I like it.

So whats bad about it then ?

Theres a few little gripes about the game. The first being the plot. It seems to be that they just invented the plot to have one there (basically you need to find map pieces on islands to find some tower). Completing missions simply progress you onto the next missions with a mission containing a map piece every now and then. This plot isn\'t really used at all, infact they claim the island hasn\'t been explorered yet theres small towns and even a rail way on the first island. :) The lack of plot doesn\'t really take much away from the game but they could have used a plot to add to the game. So basically you select a mission and fly it out.

The second gripe are the extra modes. Theres a few of them, but really they all are the same. Sky writing is basically drawing shapes following targets, Target mode is basically following targets, training is not really an extra mode just a nice feature and free flight only allows you to fly in a certain level not the whole island.

However the fact that they didn\'t need to include them is nice. Also you can do up your plane with extra little features.

Finally, and this basically can\'t be helped is the game can be frustrating. You make a mistake when flying upside down in a cave and you have to start the whole mission again, from taking off and even getting to the cave. Die a few times and you can be talking 30 mins worth of game play time. This eventually will lead to frustration.

I\'ve touched mainly on the downfalls of this game as if I went into most of the reasons why its fun then i\'d be repeating myself from every other review on the net.

So in short, adventure mode is where this game is fun. The game is by no means outstanding and I disagree when IGN gave it 9 / 10, however the game is certainly fun and its worth more than PSW\'s 7/10.

I would give this game a good fun 4/5.

Richard.

Thanks. I\'ve just added a paragraph about how it may get frustrating if you die a few times on the same missions.

Yeah Sky Odyssey is a cool game. I like it a lot and im pleased I got it.

Keep in mind, as you clear missions the FREE FLIGHT area will expand to incorporate the new areas. So eventually you will be able to Free Flight the whole map--continuous:)

Erm lets see Gun Griffon Verus Sky Odyssey. Well I wouldn\'t go for Kengo as all the reviews i\'ve read are poor and its a shame cause the original Bushido Blade was cool.

Well they are both different games and you could get them both without feeling one treads on the other ones ground.

However if you wanted to choose one game only i\'d say.

Gun Griffon Blaze

Basically I feel both games are slickly presented, they both all have little extras and both allow you to do stuff like customise the vehicle, e.g. mech or plane.

However Gun Griffon Blaze although only has 6 missions, is the better game in my opinion. All 6 missions are nicely constructed and thought out. The gameplay is another good strong point. Finally when making a decision like this its better to be safe than sorry and theres no doubt about it that Gun Griffon Blaze will be more accessible with it being a first person shooter rather than a flight sim.

The length of the game isn\'t bad at all in Gun Griffon Blaze if your willing to play it on the "Hell" setting and are prepared to be killed a few times (it is very hard on the hell setting).

I feel that Gun Griffon Blaze is a console based game suited for the main aspect, action. Whilst Sky Odyssey you will want to be prepared to give another genre a consideration, like I did and it paid off. If you are interested in something different, which should last a long time then go for Sky Odyssey. If however you have any doubt as to if Sky Odyssey is your sort of game then go for the safer, and by no means less option Gun Griffon Blaze as its a really good game.

PS - Game Street doesn\'t work (least it isn\'t coming up now), I ordered from http://www.infront.co.uk which is streetsonline, i think there games section maybe is called gamestreet whilst there DVD section maybe is called DVDstreet. It was the cheapest at http://www.shopsmart.com weighing in at good value of £31.99 with free P&P.

Well done Rich this could be my next game i buy fior my PS2.

i loved Pilot wings and the idear of having a free flight over the entire game sounds great.

plus i like the idear of collecting aircraft parts and building faster and stronger planes.

Also i like the idea of the realistic weather that tryes to kill you every chance it gets.

You will love this game then.

The weather is good. They even include a little weather facts bit which explains what cold fronts do and the like.
