What bit is XBox??!!?!?!?
« on: June 03, 2001, 07:22:15 PM »
Please tell  me in the best looking 32-bit game post that jumpman was joking about xbox being 32-bit?  If it is that is the most amazing 32-bit I\'ve ever seen.  What bit is the xbox does anyone know?  I thought it was 128-bit?  What bit is the x-Chip N2A?  Could someone tell me?

I\'ve heard 128-bit, and I\'ve heard 256-bit. But I\'ve never done any serious research on the matter.

... Really, bits dont matter that much anyways. They did back in the day when all developers made were 2D games.

It depends on how you look at it.  The CPU is 32bit while the GPU is 128.  Since the GPU is the hear of the Xbox is the GPU (as apposed to the PS2 whose heart is the EE) then you could say it 128 if you like.

Either way, bits don\'t really matter.  Its a lot like MHZ; 333MHZ (did I get that right?) vs. 733MHZ, which one is faster?  It is a matter of looking at the whole picture and then the results that they create.

I agree bit doesn\'t matter.  But I think its 128-bit and I also heard that its 256-bit as well.  So I guess it depends on how you look at it.

The CPU is 32 bit,as are all desktop processors.We\'ll have to wait for the Clawhammer\'s to get a 64 bit desktop processors.

And the GPU is 256 bit if I remember correctly, not sure though.

And as ho3j said you have to look at the big picture. While the P3 spanks the PS.2\'s MIPS processor silly when it comes to Mhz,the MIPS slaps the P3 silly when it comes to floating point calculations, and when you add the VU\'s the PS.2 becomes a formiddable force to reckon with.

The bottom line is,that those consoles are very different. And comparing those two by only measuring bits and Mhz is as futile as ranting and raving about........well other things (I couldn\'t think of any.writers block ;))

I think there is some part of the GPU that is 128bit so the bit fanatics (if they still exsist) get pretty hurt if you say its 256. ;)

PS2 is the only true 128 bit console, actually, the Emotion Engine is 3 processors all working at 128 bits, and at 294 mhz, working in tandom on the same or seperate things, the EE is very very powerful

XBox CPU is 32 bits
GameCube CPU is 64 bits
Dreamcast CPU is 64 bits

but thats only the XBox CPU, its the GPU that is the star of the show in the XBox console, and that is definately 128 bits

Whell, I was always under the impression that the XGPU had 4, 64-bit rendering pipelines, effectively making it a 256-bit proccessor. If someone would be so diligent as to look it up, we can move from this state of uncertainty.

bah, by that logic the EE is 512 bits

I know, but all this technical things aren\'t important. What are 1000000 Bit without funny games with a good gameplay?

there was never any arguement about saying te PS2 was better because its CPU had a 128 bit processor, while the XB only had a 32 bit processor, someone asked out of curiousity as to whether or not XB was 32 bits

And now we know that the Xbox is in essence a 256-bit machine because of its GPU. =)

uhh...but what about the 32 bt CPU...the heart of the machine?

lets average it out

256 + 32 / 2 = 144 bits

hows that Avvy, you stuborn bastAAArd
