Here is yet another article from ps2.ign.com:
A Tale to Tell
You may want to skip the first few sub-headings here, since they do present story SPOILERS, at least as far as the demo goes. As the first rumors out of Konami indicated, MGS2 takes place around and possibly in New York City. The game begins, however, on the tanker ship Discovery, heading down the river between New York and New Jersey. The Discovery is being used by the US Marine Corps to translate their experimental Metal Gear Ray, a new evolution of Metal Gear designed to defeat the many Rex descendants that have spread to cover the world.
As you may recall from the end of the first game, Revolver Ocelot made it off Shadow Moses Island with the test data from Metal Gear Rex -- well, he sold that on the international black market, and as Otacon puts it in the beginning of the demo, every state, group and dot.com has its own version of Metal Gear. Thus, the arms race continues, with a new amphibious anti-Metal Gear vehicle code-named Ray designed to defeat its weaker ancestors. In response, the "Philanthropy" organization, a group formed by the UN to combat Metal Gear worldwide, sends its best agent to board the Discovery and get the dirt on Ray. That agent, of course, is Solid Snake, backed up by his old associate Otacon.
As Snake soon discovers, though, he\'s not the only one after Metal Gear. A rogue team from Spetsnaz, the former Soviet Army special forces, including Revolver Ocelot, sends in its commandos to take over the tanker and seize the Ray. It\'s there that the story fades into uncertainty, although you can bet that Ocelot will try playing both ends against the middle one more time. Several characters have been shown or spoken of without any indication of how they\'ll fit into the plot, including Fortune, the new Ninja, and Solidus Snake.
One big unanswered question concerning MGS2\'s story is which of Metal Gear Solid\'s two endings was the "real" one, i.e. from which one the sequel descends. The creators have not said which, but the evidence strongly points toward the "bad" ending, where Meryl Silverburgh died. Meryl is not mentioned anywhere in the MGS2 trailers or demo, although Mei Ling and Naomi Campbell are, and the Japanese seiyuu (voice actor) who played Meryl in MGS, Kyoko Terase, returns in MGS2 to play the role of Olga.
Cast and Crew
From the trailers and demo, the list of major roles in MGS2 (all designed by artist Yoji Shinkawa) is as follows (so far):
Solid Snake: Formerly of Fox Hound, now an independent agent working with Philanthropy, a UN-sponsored fringe organization formed to curtail development and use of Metal Gear. The baddest mother-shut-yo-mouth in the world.
Solidus Snake: We still don\'t even know if this character will appear in the game -- the E3 2001 trailer seems to indicate that he\'s dead, although one line from the original trailer suggests otherwise. Solidus was a third clone of Big Boss, superior to either Solid or Liquid. He rose much higher than either of them, becoming 43rd President of the United States under the false name George Sears. The Shadow Moses incident occurred during his administration, leading one to wonder whether it was Solidus that Revolver was speaking to in the end of Solid.
Otacon: You met him in Metal Gear Solid, where he was one of the developers of the Metal Gear Rex. Now he\'s Snake\'s control, also a member of Philanthropy. He hacked out the information about the development and transport of the Ray, leading to Snake\'s new mission.
Revolver Ocelot: Revolver was the lone survivor of the rebel Fox Hound team that took over Shadow Moses in the original Metal Gear Solid. At the end of that game, it was revealed that he was a turncoat, working for a mysterious "Mr. President" to secure the Metal Gear Rex test data. Between the two games, he sold the Rex data on the open market, leading to the spread of Metal Gear technology worldwide. Now, he\'s part of the rogue Spetsnaz group that\'s after the Ray, and curiously enough he\'s found a replacement for the hand that Gray Fox amputated in MGS. KCEJ has indicated that that hand is in fact Liquid\'s hand, and that part of Liquid may have taken residence in Ocelot\'s mind...
Olga Gurlukovich: The most striking character introduced in the first MGS2 trailers, Olga is a lifelong member of Spetsnaz, completely devoted to her unit. Her father is the leader of the unit, and unnaturally protective of her, which she resents somewhat...
Olga\'s Father: Presumably also named Gurlukovich, although he is addressed by neither rank nor name in his scenes in the demo. He\'s the officer leading the Spetsnaz unit that hijacks the tanker in an attempt to steal the Metal Gear Ray.
Marine Commander: The third major faction on board the tanker, aside from Snake and the Spetsnaz team, is the Marine Corps unit that\'s taking the Ray out for testing. Operating covertly, under the command of an officer who remains anonymous (that\'s him delivering the speech in the E3 2001 trailer), their aim is to develop a weapon that can counter forces in the US military-industrial complex that they believe are behind the leaking of the Rex design and test data.
Fortune: One of the three silhouettes in the McFarlane toy series, Fortune was introduced in the E3 2001 trailer. Her allegiance is unclear, but she\'s definitely not on good terms with Snake. Fortune is a soldier, albeit not a trained one -- she simply possesses unearthly luck on the battlefield. Bullets can\'t harm her, in sharp contrast to the continuous misfortune that she encounters anywhere but a fight. To take advantage of her luck, she\'s armed with a massive railgun. The recoil and inaccuracy hardly matter, when you have all the time in the world to take aim.
Ninja: According to Kojima, he\'s back by popular demand -- the E3 2001 trailer includes a new cyborg Ninja, although it\'s highly unlikely that this is Gray Fox come back from the dead. Speculation as to its identity ranges from Meryl Silverburgh to various Fox Hounds to Big Boss himself. Of course, all the Ninja has to say is "I have no name..."
Anonymous: One more new character appears in the E3 2001 trailer, a man with no name and no clear motivation. He\'s inhumanly fast, armed with a set of knives, and takes a disturbing pleasure in laying his victims\' throats open.
Other characters are certain to join these. In particular, there are those silhouettes that were introduced as part of the McFarlane Toys Metal Gear Solid 2 action figure line, two of which have yet to be named. One is Fortune, and one is probably Solidus, but the third, which bears a striking resemblance to the Ninja, is still unnamed, although one online toy retailer gave it the name "Raiden."
Well that\'s pretty much it for now.
