Nintendo didn\'t embellish the sales. That number stands. They just claimed to be the fastest. Although the Sony rep who disputes that claim goes on to mention that Nintendo based its numbers on the TRSTS which represent only 75% of the market.
"We sold 510,000 units in the first two days the system was in the market. That\'s based on our [Sony\'s] initial numbers," said Smith. According to Nintendo representatives, the company based its numbers on the most recent NPD and TRSTS sales data for the month of October, which stated that the PlayStation sold through only 309,000 units that month. Smith commented: "TRSTS represents 75 to 80% of [the US] market...not the entire market."
TRSTS show 309,000 PS2s in a month and Sony counts 510,000 in two days. Then they show 500,000 GBAs in just a week... so imagine how many that would translate to. That being the case, it looks like Nintendo is the one who\'s right.
Further, even if Smith
is right about everything, which doesn\'t seem likely, it is still reasonable to assume that if Nintendo used Sony\'s counting method, it could find that it sold as many as 666,666 GBA\'s during the first week. (For those wondering, 75% of that number is 500,000)
Either way, Nintendo is well on its way to [sing] moneymoneymoney MOOON-EY! ... MON-EY! [/sing]
