Well I guess PS2 HDD is pretty much dead

http://gamespot.com/gamespot/stories/news/0,10870,2782621,00.html

I mean if you add 39$ ethernet card. You might as well as say that is 200$ And seeing how the hdd will be upgraded every year kind of sinks it. I mean at $299 plus the hdd and modem card that is about 500$bucks. (And yes everyone saying they will lower the price because they lowered it in japan. Well It still cost $281.7 dollars in japan and it retails for $299 us. I just don\'t see them going even lower and they flat out said they won\'t.  And even if they did drop the price which they said they won\'t you still would end up paying more for everything you get with xbox if you bought the add-ons for ps2)

The Ethernet adaptor is bundeled with the Hdd in Japan.
So you get the Broadband adaptor, a 56k modem and a 40 GB Harddrive for $135-145.

But 145 dllrs. is still way too much for me.

Can you give a link to what your saying, because I read that sony would sell the ethernet card seperately for $39. And the article on gamespot does not say anything about what your saying. It say HDD and nothing about a bundle, but if it is true I would like to read the press release.

PS2 Hard Disk Drive gets a price and date
Posted on 07/03/2001 at 8:08 PM
Sony Computer  Entertainment sets price and release date for their new add-on the hard disk drive.
According to Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shinbun, SCE has confirmed that the hard disk drive add-on for the PlayStation 2 will be released in japan on July 19. This release is most likely due to the fact that the highly anticipated Final Fantasy X is coming out on July 19, and uses the hard disk drive. The price will be set to $153 for the external hard drive and $145 for the internal.
This price seems a bit high, but on SCEI\'s Japanese site it says that the Hard Disk Drive is bundled with the Network Adapter. The North American Hard Disk Drive Bundle will cost $145 as stated above. The bundle will include the PlayStation 2 Hard Disk Drive and Network Adapter.

In my opinion, there is no way Sony can succesfully market this item. The general rule is, if you don\'t include it in the box, people won\'t pay for it, unless they must (aka memory cards). Then, if you decide you will market an add-on, it better be under the $75 price tag and that is pushing it. So, yes, in my opinion, it is pretty much dead.  I don\'t know if I\'ll buy one or not. It really serves me no purpose, as I don\'t have access to broadband, but at the same time, I collect these things.

Thanks:) Still too much I guess they decided that if they are going to sell these items they can\'t sell the seperately at prices of 39$ethernet and 145$HDD.

In any case they are loosing a lot of money droping all these prices, but that is business. I still say the hdd is dead.

When you think about it, $135 isn\'t very expensive in gaming wise.

XBOX, your making it sound like a ****ty deal, adding up the money like that. I\'ll play that game, too.

You buy a PS2-------------------------> $300
You buy 3 games----------------------> $150 (you can get a HDD for less
You buy an extra controller---------> $30

That adds up to $480, which will most likely be same price if you substitute that for XBOX stuff.

And the whole package will include ethernet adapter.

3 games at 150 as supose to an HDD at 145$U.S wOW A 5dollar save.  Add-ons never do well and priced this high won\'t.

So what if your thinking of getting a new console and you see all the features you can get in one console you have to buy for another at a higher price.

I think that if the Hard Drive is going to do well, they shoudl package in a game that actually uses the hard drive to get people intrested, so in a way, it would be $50 game the $100 harddrive, pretty sneaky eh? make it look better to the public. I\'ll still buy one though, i like having everything complete :)

Problem with logic:

You buy a PS2 = $300.
You buy three games = $150
You buy a memory card = $30.
You buy a HD = $140.

Total price = $ 620.

You buy an Xbox  = 300.
You buy three games  = $150.
You buy a memory card = $30.

Total price.
$480.

---------------------------------------------------------------
The XBOX is still cheaper, due to the HD not being an add-on. Plus, you are paying for an add-on that is not gurantee\'d to be succesful. You could very well end up being like the 32X, Sega CD, 64DD owners.
Its just risky. I wonder how many people will take that risk and spend the extra cash.

Hey, I was right!

from a post I made a couple months ago;

"Even if that is a Linux programming package, you can still get a good idea of how much it is going to cost for the online package. If they charge that much for this package I\'d guess the online package would be ~$150 or more which is still too much. Like I already said, since they will be selling a separate ethernet adapter I will just get that and hopefully it won\'t be super expensive like the DC ethernet adapter."

I\'m so proud!:)
