The forced army of europe.
« on: July 09, 2001, 01:06:57 PM »
Just read Hawke\'s thread about him going into the army. A few people I speak to on IRC (also from Finland) had to do the same.

Im a lazy b*stard the thought of doing PE in my school days sent shivers down my spine, the thought of being forced into the army for milatary training for 6+ months, doing constant physical exercise and not playing video games is my nightmare.

I am like so lazy. Seriously im so glad we don\'t get this.

Geez for once im glad to live in the UK!!!!

Thanks Tony Blair and co.

PS If any of you none UK\'ers are wondering our life is our life, we aren\'t forced to do anything except Jury Juty (sp?) if you are summoned.

It\'s exactly the same thing here, man.  I\'ve never been in the military, but I just completed seven days of jury duty last week.  I was on a civil trial where a woman claimed that her cosmetic surgeon didn\'t adequately treat an infection that arose after breast reduction surgery.  (only in LA, right??? )  Anyway, our jury voted unanimously with the defense and SENT HER PACKING!  Hah hah... justice was served!!!

Jury duty is a pain, but at least you feel like you\'re contributing something useful to your society.  I think I would have been a terrible soldier.  You see, I have this problem with authority.  Anyway, volunteer armies have problems too.  You tend to get mostly one certain type of person, and it\'s not always the type of person you want behind the trigger of a gun.  Same problem with the police.  At least that\'s the way I see it. :)

In Spain the army service is just finished. I´m the first generation that don´t have to go to this silly service (service for what, or who?).

I will not respond to this post because I will more than likely...:

A) Bring up the fact that today\'s generation is a bunch of lazy self-serving pompus asses with no regard for honor or respect for elders.

B) Offend all the liberal types who think the military is an evil entity, but at the same time cry about their civil rights when the cops pepper spray their hippie asses, when it\'s the evil military that protects those rights in the first place.

C) Be BIAS, BIAS, BIAS... Because I served in the USAF, and realize that for the young (and older) the military instills a sense of duty, honor and responsibility that is badly needed in todays corrupt and perverse world.

D) All of the above...and then some.

You did right there by saying its a fact. Am I offended by this? Sure am. I couldn\'t agree more though. :D Except for the pompus and asses bit, the lazy bit for me is true. :)

If there is a war or police action that America is involved in that needs troops, you BETTER believe that you will see me sign up first thing. I will fight for my country and die for it. I don\'t see this same mentality from my peers. seems like all they do it get drunk and smoke dope. They need direction in their lives. Maybe forced registration isn\'t enough for America, we need forced enlistment!

Well RichGUK....I\'m lazy too, but only when it doesn\'t matter much:)

Just some FYI for y\'all. If there were a war, the drafting of men goes like this.:

21yr olds.
20
19
18

22
23
24
etc.

(to the best of my recollection)

...And that\'s only if we run out of reserve units. Me at 32 and having prior service would most likely (barring The Apocolypse ?!?  ...hmmm...) never be called.

Yeah..
Its sucks being forced into the army. (If you refuse you\'ll go to jail.. Very silly and childish)

I mean, whats the point anyways?
The threat from Russia (who were the biggest enemies of sweden) is loooong gone.

Whats the frickin point?

Also by forcing people into the Army its like the country expect a war. Fair enough on one hand its sensible to prepare for a war incase there was one, but how far in preparing for a war actually provokes / encourages war.

Im not saying that forcing people into the army is going to provoke war but its a bit much. Shouldn\'t a army of people who wanted to be in the army (ala UK) be enough for piece of mind that incase of war the country will be defended.

Countries which force people into the army to build up a army "just incase" of war, are like the countries which build Nuclear Warheads, it all sends out bad messages if you ask me.

muhahahaha there is no army here in Iceland,so I\'ll never have to go.

But,it\'s better for me that more yankee\'s sign up to serve,as it is the Americans that protect Iceland.

So when the Danish Empire invades Iceland lead by Samwise,Altered Beast will be here to protect me :p j/k

You\'re welcome!  :D

At first they wouldn\'t take college students, or people with horrible eye sight, or people who are color blind.  (All me)  But once the draft gets to that point I just want people to know that I ain\'t runnin\'!

My dad spent 4 years in the AF, loading bombs onto planes.  Cool job.

The Swedish army isnt preparing a war.. (I hope.. Cuz you couldnt stop berserking vikings with Ak5\'s) ;)

About forceing young men into the army is something old. We\'ve been doing this for a long time..
But Im sure it will change really soon.
Cuz the goverment has cut the budget even more..
But I fear that they might make it bigger again.. Now when Swedish Bofors is selling some fighters (JAS 39 Gripen) to some country. (dont rember the name..)

I hope they change the law.
Cuz more and more are loosing faith in it.. Especially now when there is no threat.. (Denmark, haha no ;).. Norway, nope. Finnland, nope. Russia, nah Putin seems kinda nice.. Germany, nah. Poland, no way. ect.)

Well, my thoughts on this is, I\'d never volunteer. I have terrible eyesight and I\'d probably do more harm on the battlefield than good, because I am not a warrior. But if I were called into service, I would do it for my country. IF IT WERE FOR A WORTHWHILE CAUSE. I might have dodged Nam if I were called, because we had no business fighting there at all. But if it were WWII, I\'d go without a problem, because we were really needed and we made a huge difference and saved the free world and all that fun stuff. I\'d probably try to be Navy though, I\'m just not Army or Marine material at all, and I\'m already deathly scared of heights, so Air Force is out.

I just hope China doesn\'t do anything stupid, because we\'ll smash their asses. And I really wouldn\'t like to die either.

" Even if I do owe you, I don\'t owe the army or
this country !"

" Why should I be stupid enough to do that, I\'m
no patriot. "

a Snake\'s words...
War is no fun. Here in the Netherlands I just escaped
army duty, because I was born in 1978 and ppl from that
year and further don\'t have to go to the army obligitary.
But bet your ass that if a war should break out, I\'m getting a phone call or a letter to help the army.
Somebody has to do the dirty job. I hope they can resolve conflicts with robots in the future.
