I\'m confused kimosabe

are you for or against sed harddrive at its asking price.

I have no problems buying the thing if it proves to have $150.00 worth of value in it.

since I have been unsucessful in getting DSL or Cable broadband music and movies won\'t be a reality for me

Why would anyone want or need Movies and music on their  HDD? Did everyone toss out their cable boxes and stereos? This isn\'t a flame, I\'m seriously curious. Why does Sony want to be a jack of all trades and master of none? Those articles are pretty old, aren\'t there any newer ones? Despite my current position on the HDD, I can always change my mind...

As long as SONY keeps to these plans I\'ll be happy.  The junction with the Gameshow Network is awesome!

Thanks for the good news and fresh air on the subject.

The future of entertainment will be set top type boxes that do offer all kinds of entertainment.

Since the PS2 is hooked up to your entertainment system (well mine is) I can then stream movies in Digital quality off the net. I could rent these movies and drive to blockbuster or I can just watch them anytime I want.

With Music there is all kinds of great music on the internet. Soon everyone will be downloading movies and burning memory sticks and CD\'s of their own.

Not to mention the huge advantages videogames will have with the harddrive. All of this is yet to be realized but this is the direction things are going and I\'m looking forward to it and whatever else.

As for Sony being the jack of all trades and masters of none. Welp they are doing fine in my book. I\'m having alot of fun with my black box  and thats why I bought the thing

Funny, I hate the idea off a all in one set top box. And apparently, a lot of people do, or CDi and 3DO would be running things... (not a flame, just my take on it).

I have digital cable, while not exactly the same as paperview streaming, I find it preferable to d/l movies and paying with a credit card.

How can you burn cds with mp3s on your ps2 hd? If you mean saving to a memory stick and putting them on your PC, well, you dont need the ps2 to d/l mp3s to a pc. And again, d/l mp3s on my pc and burning them will always be better than listening to them on your tv.

Now games are what a game system are supposed to be about. I\'m very interested in the possabilities here. But not enough info in this area is out there yet, so I cant get too excited yet.

:D I\'m enjoying my PS2 also. I just dont see me enjoying anything but games on it. This set top box idea seems to me like a watered down version of what we have, just for the sake of Sony saying \'hey, we can do this\'. Matbe im crazy, or just missing something, but I\'ll stop watching tv when d/l a movie is your only option. Same with the music thing. Neither sound (to me) like a improvement over what\'s already out there. It sounds to me like Sony just wants to be the MS of the living room , and own everything hooked up to your Sony tv. That\'s something I dont look foward too... to me a game nsystem should be like GC. Just about the games...

Well I on the other hand love the set top box Idea. Although I don\'t think it will really be a feasible reality until next gen machines are out.

I paid $300 for a PS2 and If I can squeeze out a couple grands worth of entertainment on that one system I\'m all for it.

DOn\'t forget there are USB ports on the PS2 so theoretically anything can be hooked up to it.

I don\'t anticipate alot of initial success, but SOny will continue this  set top box trend and will re-inforce 10 fold for the PS3

The real thing holding back set top boxes is broadband avaialbility, as soon  as broadband becomes norm your going to have a choice. Buy a game machine and a set top box of buy a 1 in all box for less money.

but there is still no denying the raised elements a harddrive can bring to video games

As long as I influence the market, I\'ll be against set top boxes or e-machines or all-in-ones.  I hate those ideas as they only take pieces of machines that do tons of different things.

It\'s just like one of those all-in-one printer-fax-modem-scanner-copier P.O.S.s I used to sell at OfficeMax.  THEY ARE TRASH.

So are we saying the HDD will fail or be successful?

No one knows. Me and ddaryl agree it can do great things for games, but we\'re split on its non-game applications. I\'ve said in other threads I don\'t see it being too successful, but there\'s good arguments on both sides. It\'s really a wait n see proposition.

I agree with Double D on alot of things and some things here. Krimson also. However, I can\'t imagine how people say they can\'t imagine what the hard-drive will be used for.

Ddaryl I believe even you siad in one topic that if it was only used for saving games and a few other levels that it wouldn\'t be you investment. Granted if it was only used for that I wouldn\'t do it either. However sony has many plans that require the hard-drive.

And I guese im indifferent to the all-in-one set up boxes. I dont see the downside to it though. A reason I bought my PS2  (and I believe about 60% of Japanese PS2 owners) was because it also had DVD playback. I did also buy it because it had some greate games being released down the road. I liked Krimsons comment on "downloading to the Ps2 then tranfering to the Pc. Why not jsut go strait to the PC?"  The PS2 will never replace my PC. It would be nice if the PS3 did however.

I\'ve found that all-in-one devices tend to perform some of their functions poorer than equivalent dedicated devices.  This is just a generalization, but I\'ve seen it more than once.  Even the PS2 is an example.  The PS2 is a poor DVD player by most standards; it doesn\'t correctly display anamorphic images on 16:9 displays, it doesn\'t output progressive video, and it\'s analog audio quality is not good.  The video quality doesn\'t even meet the standard of the cheapest interlaced DVD players.  For the moment, this doesn\'t bother me because I still think the PS2 is well worth the cost just as a gaming console.

When you buy an all-in-one device, you\'re stuck with all the components that are included in that device, and for me that\'s a HUGE drawback.  I\'m assembling a home theater now, and I\'m very happy that I can replace my components one at a time.  I can take my time finding the perfect display, receiver, DVD player, speakers, etc.  I know many ordinary consumers are annoyed by having to do that kind of research, but I enjoy it.  When Sony and others produce all-in-one devices, I don\'t think it\'s a power play to sieze control of your living room.  I think they\'re just trying to hit that certain market of uninformed consumers who want to buy everything based on name brand, and not have to understand the technology behind it.
