Casual Gamers are Better Off Being Casual
« Reply #30 on: August 07, 2001, 05:36:28 AM »
I\'m not tired of gaming.  I won\'t be tired of gaming till I\'ve made millions of dollars as a game developer.  I\'ve haven\'t graduated college yet, so I\'ve got plenty of gaming years left in me.  As long as the most innovative ideas still remain in the minds of those who\'ve haven\'t broken through yet. I\'ve got no reason to lose my spirit for videogames.

Quite frankly I still see room for innovation.  It\'s just not being realized fast enough.  If we had larger amounts of disposable income...we wouldn\'t research games to hell like we do now.  Our researching video games is an economical force.  You wouldn\'t buy a car at first sight would you?

I can see how people get sick and tired of video games because great titles are too far apart.   What we\'re missing is games that will evolve with us.  That challenge us on more than one scale..that stimulate more than just our retinas and pupils but our cerebullums and cerebral cortexis. :nerd: while the blisters on our thumbs remain constant.

Where\'s the next fighting game that will excite you almost to an adrenaline rush? When you duck a punch, then sneak in a mid-to-low kick that defeats the final boss, are you going to raise your hands in victory? Pump your fist as you congratulate yourself w/ a job well done?

Aren\'t we tired of the Motion Down-Toward + Punch? How about Away-Down-Toward + Kick? And even "Dragon Punch Motion" It\'s not just lame fighting games, but First Person Shooters with huge guns, repetitive monster and explosion graphics, Lackluster Adventure games with a weak plot, and sports games that play the same every single year and offer no rewards for purchasing the franchise 2 years in a row. 15 Resident Evil\'s may sound like a good idea, but in practice it isn\'t. Online Gaming where if you don\'t have a Broadband Connection and the Most Powerful Video Card Known to Man, overclocked w/ 12 Fans on it, you\'d get lag and still be 10 frames per second too slow.  Hell I\'d be sick of games too.  But I don\'t get depressed because I know that help is on the way.

I don\'t know how long it will be before games get better, and I mean much better, much more original and intriguing.  However, I am certain that the Innovation will come back. It has to or the industry is sunk. However I believe that the new generation of developers or wanna-be developers will make changes happen.  Will redefine what a good game is.  And Will make us all glad we took up this hobby in the first place.

ok to tell you the truth this is the best thread i have ever seen on this forum. it has lately also gotten to me.

so, i was stiitn down with my copy of gt3, and i begin to play. as i look in the distance, i see the stadium popup in the far distance in super speedway. so,  im like damn..  i couldne be exited for gt3. i had alread y seen the screens, and movies, and reviews, so i knoew how good it would be graphically and gameplay wise.

that had got me thinking that sitting on these forums talking about games non stop really can wear you down.

so you know what boards i visit first? off topic, and rants and raves. why? because i love to talk about real life things, like helping unknown with his car, and replying to stuff that i am interested in. when i was a casual gamer, i enjoyed the 2 baseball world. with the NES. then playstation came along, and jet moto amazed me. crash bandicoot looked sooooo cool!!! he looked almost real.  but nowadays, i look at the intro of gt3, and remember when i downloaded it, to take a look at it. so the intro was just boring, not amazing or suprising.  i almost never go to console debating.  ryu has made a great and outstanding point.

IT IS BETTER TO BE A CASUAL GAMER
IM BACK. you have a problem with that? get in the back.

Casual gamers don\'t need to stay casual. Knowledge of (and playing) video games is no problem. As long as they\'re not playing excessively, there\'s no problem.

Heres how I see it

-You can be casual and have great fun playing your games

-Or you could be like half the dumbasses on this site and complain about every game and never really have any fun, if your so critical about every game how are you supposed to have fun

playing games is all about having fun!!!!!!!!!!!

Playing excessively?  What the hell does that mean?

Wow.  I have so many great ideas, but it\'s rarely a programmer that gives the ideas.  I\'d LOVE to be an assistant director for a future FF game.  My battle system idea is literally a revolution of all battle systems.  I should make a thread of it here, but I dunno who would be willing to read that lengthy post.

That was an awesome article you wrote there, Ryu...I am impressed... You really got your point across, and I read every word (even though it was a long read...it was a good read). Peace.

Oh...anytime...;) This has been the greatest thread yet because there hasn\'t been any lame postnig. All the posts are long, "though-out" ideas which came from the head, and not the arse.

yes, but the question is, now what are we going to do about it? many of the people who post here already know that they are in too deep. :D so will we see the regulars taper off and stop posting? or will the great off topic and rants and raves forums get into full swing??

im soo happy that ryu wrote a long thread so the newbies wouldnt take the time to read it. (but thats not the real reason why)

and after all of this we say, "ok now we know that this is better, but what are we going to do about it? nothing."
IM BACK. you have a problem with that? get in the back.

in FF9 i was disappointed that they showed the characters in the booklet...almost \'forcing\' me to look at them, id prefer mystery about who the character actually is when they talk to me and become a party member.

I miss those days. The days that any character I\'d talk to could be my next fighting partner. Nowadays too much is revealed. --

Anyhow, it does suck to be \'hardcore.\' The sad fact is that we are pretty much screwed. We can\'t just forget what aliasing is, or bump-mapping, filtering, etc. On another note, I do hope that developers use this generation for testing the waters, and provide true innovation in the next. Fortunately, we\'re still early in this era, and things can still change.

It\'s funny how we want innovation, yet we can still enjoy countless sequels of Castlevania. :) Perhaps the secret lies in the roots.
