Crappy American Car Vs Everything Else
« Reply #15 on: August 18, 2001, 05:57:40 AM »
America is good at many things but not the best in everything.  The car manufacturing title for reliability goes to Japan or Germany imo.  Who doesn\'t love the old 60\'s muscle cars though?

It doesn\'t matter who makes cars and who makes them. Nobody cares. Volkswagon was made by Hitler. You can\'t drive a whole day without seeing one Beetle.

The VW bug/beetle/whatever (the old one mind you) was so popular because of it\'s simplicity and low cost after the war. From a modern viewpoint it\'s an absolutely horrible car.

It is true that most American cars are trash. At least were, I believe the quality is increasing rapidly and many american cars can match up to their Japan and European counterparts.

Just look at Ford (a company I absolutely hate) Americans are figuring out that their cars suck, so Ford stops making the Escort (dubbed Deathscort by my brothers), the Contour, the Tempo, etc. The cars are trash, and Ford has been forced to improve the quality.

My brothers Honda went 318,000 Miles before we sold it, as it needed a new clutch cable. The only repairs we had done on it were new clutch and and some minor repairs. The car is probably still running today.

My pop\'s old VW Beetle went another 300+ thousand miles before dying, something you couldn\'t find in American cars.

But I think for the most part, Chevrolet and Chrysler (which you could say is German) are improving their cars. Making them more stylish (300M and Monte Carlo), more dependable, and more fun.

Also, note that the best car by Motor Trend or one of those magazines has been Corvette for the past 2 years. And QuDDuS is correct about Mustangs, they suck nuts. And haven\'t been good since they changed the body from the 64 and a half body. They are overrated, and more importantly, chick cars.

give me a 68 Corvette with a 454 or 502 any day over ANY import or any car for that matter. My other choices would be :

1979 280ZX
90\'s 300ZX
3000GT
Dodge Stealth
Corvette (any year)
Subaru WRX
93 Supra Twin Turbo (FLIES)

As far as quality and dependability go, I rank:

1.  Toyota/Lexus
2.  Honda/Acura
3.  Mercedes Benz
4.  Volkswagon/Audi
5.  Jaguar

Ok, I dislike Fords main line but you have to give Lincoln some credit.  The Navigator may suck up gas and run into problems often, but I would not decline the offer.  Would you rather have an Audi A4 or a Lincoln Navigator.  Now the new Ford Explorers have been having problems, but it\'s not too distant cousin the Mountaineer hasn\'t reported problems.  Well that\'s my speech.

Prime Minister, you cannot carry on forever squeezing the productive bit of the economy in order to fund an unprecidented engorgement of the unproductive bit. You cannot spend your way out of recession or borrow your way out of debt.\" - Daniel Hannan

OK guys if I were to trade in my Explorer for a dependable 4x4 that looks nice and will last what would I pick?

What do you guys think of Jeep? When it comes to SUVs.

« Reply #28 on: August 21, 2001, 09:14:25 AM »
and go with an AWD car..  You can\'t go off roading, but it will put to shame a 4WD truck on the road anyday..

I did own a Nissan Pathfinder, a 2000 year model.  It was nice, they are great trucks, but I am so glad I own a car again...

Thats the thing, I don\'t like AWD cars. I\'ve been into SUVs since I was a young buck. I was thinking about getting a Pathfinder too because I have heard so many good things about it. That and my Explorer decided to breakdown for no inexplicable reason except that it hates me like a retarded red-headed step child with one eye and two teeth.
