Samwise\'s Great Movie tip #2
« on: September 23, 2001, 02:49:22 AM »
Hello children.

I have already given you a Great Movie tip before - that was Memento. Now I have another Great Movie tip for you... The movie is:

The Others

It\'s a horror/thriller movie with Nicole Kidman and two British child actors. It\'s very wellmade and it has a very clever and surprising twist at the end. The basic story (without spoilers) is about a woman who lives alone with her two children in England circa 1945. Her husband died in the war and she\'s now living with her children and three servants in a big house/mansion. The children have a rare disease, which makes bright light fatal to them - they\'ll get big sores and eventually suffercate if exposed to sunlight. Thus they have to live in relatively darkness all the time - and the mother (Kidman) chooses to lock and open/close the doors so that no light can go from one room to another.

Well, soon they start hearing strange noises... and the children get exposed to \'the others\' - especially a kid called Victor. They (the children) believe the house is haunted, but the mother isn\'t quite as willing to believe as they are... but she will later.

The atmosphere is really cool and there are quite a few thrills in the movie. It\'s not your ordinary slasher movie, but it\'s very effective and creepy. Let\'s just say I got one of the biggest scares of my life towards the end... a bit before the big plot twist, which I won\'t tell you about here - that would spoil the fun. :)

I give it a ********** (9/10)

So summa summarum: Go watch the movie. It\'ll be worth it!

So until next time... take care.

Just curious if you like movies that I like.  If you don\'t then I know I probably won\'t like this movie.  If you DO like the movies that I like then I\'ll run out and see the Others.

I just don\'t want another Tomb Rader fiasco..

hehehe.

If you like Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Big Lebowski, Payback, Face Off, Tommy Boy, Goodfellas, Chinatown, Look Who\'s Talking Two (J/K)...

Then you are alright.

Aha, I see where you\'re going. Here are some movies that I enjoy (a mixed bunch of genres and stuff, so not necessarily masterpieces, but enjoyable to me):

Braveheart
Top Gun
Schindler\'s List
Alien
Saving Private Ryan
Unforgiven
The Shawshank Redemption
The Green Mile
T2
Bladerunner
Platoon
Forrest Gump
JFK
Bram Stoker\'s Dracula
American Beauty
The Usual Suspects

If you like Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels [ok], Big Lebowski [boring], Payback [ok], Face Off [ok], Tommy Boy [good], Goodfellas [good], Chinatown [?], Look Who\'s Talking Two (J/K)...

Then you are alright.
I\'ll let you be the judge. But the movies I recommend have to be good, otherwise I wouldn\'t be recommending them. ;)

I rate Memento higher than The Others though. But both are very good movies in their own way.

POTENTIALLY VAGUE SPOILERS . USE CAUTION
« Reply #8 on: September 23, 2001, 10:43:17 AM »
Sorry, Samwise.  I saw The Others, and I was sort of unimpressed.  There were a few "shock" scares that got the attention of the audience, and the general topic of ghosts is something that scares many people, but not me.  This is one of those movies that sort of depends on it\'s big "twist" ending too much.  It\'s fine to have an ending like that, but you shouldn\'t depend on it so much to payoff the audience for what is otherwise a fairly boring and uneventful story.  They shouldn\'t have wound it up so much.  The reason is because there\'s always the danger that your audience WILL FIGURE IT OUT... the way I did... very early in the movie...  then there\'s not much to look forward to, you know what I mean?

Another thing to consider: There was another film seen by many people in recent years that had a similar ending.  How could they expect that the majority of their audience would be surprised by this ending?  There IS one particular scene in this movie I\'d be interesting in discussing.  The only problem is that I\'d be spoiling it if I brought it up.  Do you think I should go ahead and mention it?

Well, I don\'t think we should discuss the spoilers... even if it is tempting... but it\'ll kinda ruin it for people who haven\'t seen the movie.

I know what movie you\'re referring to, but The Others was actually written 3 years before that (or so I\'ve heard).

Granted, it can feel a bit slow at times but I still think they pulled it off neatly. I especially liked the ending. Some people might \'think ahead\' and spoil the fun but I didn\'t - I like to let the movie lead me. :)

But but but... it\'s very hard to discuss the plot without ruining it for other people. I\'ll just stop here. ;)

Nah, that movie sucked donkey balls. At least I found it quite boring - but that\'s a whole other discussion. Let\'s keep this about The Others. :)

So.. who agrees that The Big Lebowski is great?

Our local radio station has a blind movie critic.  He\'s actually pretty good.  He went and saw glitter the other night.  This is what he said.

"If my eyesight came back in the middle of the movie I would take a pocket knife and jam it into my eye.  That was the worst movie ever.  I give it a D- only because the music.  Thank God I\'m blind."

I swear!!!
