Dolby Digital 5.1
« on: October 03, 2001, 02:05:01 AM »
Ok guys, i need your help.

I\'m wanting to buy a dvd player with a decoder in it cause my mini system supports surround sound BUT I got told that you need a sub woofer for the surround sound.
My stereo already has the centre and rear speakers but no sub.

Do I have to get a sub or not??

Thanks for your help

the .1 in the 5.1 is the sub.  You don\'t "have" to have a subwoofer, it\'s just better.

Does your stereo have 6 inputs for seperate channels?

The DVD players with decoders in them have seperate outputs for each speaker.  Unless your stereo is built with seperate I/Os for each speaker, you won\'t be able to use the dvd player\'s built in decoder.

If your stereo has a DD decoder in it then you just need a regular DVD player.

Getting a decoder built into the DVD player adds probably 100 bucks to the cost and then you will only here 5.1 with your dvd player.  You should get a stereo with the decoder in it so you can get 5.1 with the PS2, your tv, etc....

You don\'t need one to hear surround. However, the sub is what handles the bass. So if you want to feel the explosions in movies, I suggest you get a good one.

Yea, it\'s got 6 different inputs.
Thanks for the quick response guys.
Thats cool. Now I can get one plus buy a sub at a later date if I want to.

Just 1 more question. Do you still get good bass without the sub? Cause my stereo does have good bass already

It\'s just the difference between hearing the bass and feeling the bass.

Actually what\'s great about the sub is that you tell your stereo to relieve your main speakers from even messing with the lower frequencies and it makes your main speakers sound better too.

BTW, the center is the 5th channel in the 5.  If you have 6 channels it\'s adding a center to the rear.

Depending on your stereo you can set your 5.1 sound speakers for height, volume, and size, and whether or not a sub (LFE speaker) is present.  You don\'t have to have 6 speakers for 5.1 to be decoded as that\'s done inside your stereo.  But that\'s the ideal setup to maximize your pleasure :nerd:

Hehe.  More words for wisdom from VH.  Sony\'s "Elevated Standard" line is very comparable to Yamaha\'s and Onkyo\'s entry level receivers. gahh!!

The truth is in the THD...

Vulcan- You might wanna consider getting a new receiver with DD/DTS built in.  The DACs and 5.1 decoders are almost always better quality in the receiver rather than in the DVD player.  Even in a $250 receiver.  And Video pointed out another good problemo; your PS2 can output DD/DTS but has no built in decoder.

Yea this hobby ain\'t cheap. :(
