press conference (gamecube)
« on: October 08, 2001, 04:18:54 PM »
ok gentlemen of the forums...im gonna try and make this short yet to the point and,  im going to keep my impressions of the gamecube serious and anti-biased.

for those who know me,  you know that i hate nintendo ever since i experienced the ultimate dissapointment with their last console,  the n64...and ever since,  nintendo has taking their image of  \'family home entertainment\' to another degree by making an effort to focus on the younger audience rather than targeting the more mature audience which,  i believe is smart enough to appreciate higher quality gaming..but thats another topic...point is that if a system proves to be powerful and indeed has some kickass games that would appeal to me,  i would definitely want to own that system in the long run...and as much as i hate nintendo,  specially after the unveiling of the new zelda and mario sunshine and after making their statement about how they will continue to target the little kids,  i have to admit that the gamecube still appealed to me because of games like starfox adventure,  rogue leader,  wave race,  mokey ball and ofcourse the remake of resident evil 1.

although im not the type to buy consoles at launch because of my belief that new consoles dont show off their true potential until their second generation of games begin to surface,  i was still excited to get my hands on one of those little suckers come christmas time or so...which would only be about a month later...

...things change.

yesterday afternoon, my good friend datamage and i swung by toys - r- us in hopes to see the gamecube in action....and as we had expected,  it was on display,  although it wasnt the actual system,  it was a dvd movie that was being shown....they showed uncompressed gameplay footage of luigis mansion,  super smash bros melee,  rogue leader,  wave race and pilkimin or whatever that game is called.....so we stood there in hopes to get a taste of what the gamecube was really all about....

...and the dissapointments begin.

1. luigis mansion is the first victim....besides the fact that the game runs @ 30fps,  it is jaggie (the whole mansion itself from the outside looks like its infested with crawling bugs on it cause of all the jaggies that surround it) and the game is not very crisp...polygonwise- not impressive at all...the staircases and gates look very blocky and overall reminds me of what has been quoted here before.. \'a high rez n64\'...the ghosts look really good (reminds me of the haunted mansion ghosts from disneyworld) but thats the only thing that looks impressive from that game...lighting- for those who claim that luigis mansion\'s lighting blows the ps2\'s lighting,  i think you all should reevaluate that statement...from what i saw yesterday,  the lighting in that game was not impressive...the room just doesnt feel like it is naturally dark when the flashlight is off and when it gets turned on,  it just doesnt feel as if its actually illuminating the target areas correctly...the lighting just doesnt feel realistic compared to the ps2...in silent hill2 for the ps2,  you have to use a flashlight in dark rooms as well and it feels real...i hate to compare these 2 titles but i have to because its the best example i could come up with that is equal in lighting usage.....who knows if later in luigis mansion there are areas where the lighting is better used,  but from what i saw,  it was dissapointing....

2. smash bros melee- not my type of game but it looks sharp and crisp and the characters arent blocky....unfortunately theres nothing out of this world about this game...the backgrounds arent something to stare in AWE about so although this game didnt have many flaws like luigis mansion,  it didnt blow me away and make me want to purchase the gamecube...

3. wave race- once again 30 fps...and the game wasnt what i had hoped for....it has some cool effects such as water splashing on the camera and some oceans or rivers looked nice,  but it was a while into the movie until i finally said, \'ok that looks pretty cool\'...most of the movie i was bored and lost total interest in the game....once again,  this game didnt look very crisp compared to smash bros melee...(and for you to understand my interpretation of crisp,  check out soul caliber for the DC and DOA2 for the ps2...heck check out DO3 for the XBOX)

4. pilkimin i wont even review cause it doesnt interest me and didnt look impressive at all...

but i will review...
5. rogue leader- this is the game that the majority categorize as the best looking gamecube game...it is the one that i wanted to buy cause every pic i saw looked phenominal...things change when seen in motion though...
the game does not feel as if youre flying....it moves rather stiff,  like one of those star wars games for the snes that i loved in the past...looked as if the background was moving instead of the ship...the outerspace scenes were no where near what i thought they would be or thought they should be considering the power that the gamecube has...the star destroyers look plain and are missing detail....the  green laser beams from enemy tie fighters wizz by you like a 2x4 was launched at you instead...my biggest complain once again was that it doesnt feel as if youre flying..the ****pit scene felt the same stiff way and ...dear god....
they have scenes where you run on foot like \'shadow of the empire\' for the n64...man that was terrible....i couldnt beLIEve how UNimpressive that game turned out to be when i saw it in motion on a tv...so once again...nintendo has dissapointed me with their new console..

one good thing i can say is that they show really fast cut scenes of starfox that really looked nice and ofcourse im expecting monkey ball to be cool (but the ps2\'s getting that one anyway)

i am utterly dissapointed in the gamecube and am certain that i will be saving $200 + this holiday season....

my final comment,  and i hate to say it,  is that the gamecube\'s power is no more than a dreamcast (r.i.p.) and as much as i love my dreamcast and  once thought it was powerful in the past, we all know its dark fate.

gamecube gets a thumbsdown for now.

thoughts or comments?...
im dying to hear your reactions....(so much for short and to the point..id thought id never finish)

Two quick comments for now.

For lack of a better term, you\'re a graphics whore.  And: You\'re in the extreme minority when compared to people who\'ve played the games.

The PS2 has been mocked for its graphics ever since it was released.  I guess lestat thinks now it\'s Nintendo\'s turn.

I wouldn\'t say "extreme."  He may be in the extreme minority if you are only counting the Nintendo lovers, but if you include all the pure, multi-console gamers, he is not alone.  I have heard the same things that he said from many others (except that RL review is a big surprise.  That\'s actually the first review I\'ve heard of that game from a non-magazine person though.)  Maybe I\'ll go see the graphics for myself tomorrow.

I went to Toys-R-Us a few days ago and they had the same setup except it was late at night and the DVD was turned off.  I tried turning it and the tv back on, but it didn\'t work.  While I was trying I managed to eject the disc and should have just walked off with it...

I\'ve seen it all, you are trashing the GC for games that don\'t look better than the DC (tho, I\'ve never seen lighting on the DC like in Luigi\'s Mansion.hmm..) yet up until a few months ago most PS2 games looked DC quality or worse. Does anyone remember the MASSIVE jaggies in RRV? The terrible pop up in SUmmoner?  If you want to ***** about launch game quality, we can. I assure you though, for the most part, PS2 launch wasn\'t exactly stunning and anyways, beatuy is in the eye of the beholder.

That quote pretty much makes all of your points null. You call this a "press conference" (Funny, I don\'t recall you being press), yet you are stating that you are biased towards the company and their products, that you are about to "review".

Hmmmm.....

youre just an asshole..and you hate me cause im not afraid of speaking the truth..and the truth is that the gamecube,  from whats been shown,  sucks...and thats final....the ps2 sucked at launch too and had i been a member of these forums last year i wouldve bashed it to hell cause believe me,  i hated the ps2 last year cause everything looked like ass except for madden and DOA2...ridge racer was a jagg nightmare and the rest of the games were weak compared to the DC....

and too bad that the gamecube isnt doing any better at this point......why dont you swallow the cum thats stuck in your throat and admit to the gamecube\'s launch dissapointments instead of trying to hassle me for everything i say about it....if youre so much of a nintendo fanboy,  then get the HELL out of this ps2 forum!

and as for the \'press conference\' thing..it was a joke to those i know....you must be trying to take over were jumpman left off and quote me on a worthless line,  just to talk smack.

;)

I\'ll address these one at a time...

  • I am not going to argue with you. I never start fights on this forum and never have since I\'ve been here. I won\'t hold my opinion back though, just as I don\'t expect you to.
  • You cannot call the GC launch a dissapointment for the American audience when it has not even launched here yet. You can assume that it will be a dissapointment, but that doesn\'t mean it will.
  • Get it right, I\'m a Sega / Capcom fanboy. ON the other hand, I believe each console has its place in the market, unlike you, who is just pissed off that Nintendo is smart and making their money off younger audiences and forgot about the older demographic , for the most part. You never shut up with your remarks about Nintendo. I think you are under the impression that because this is a PS2 forum, that everyone is PS2 fanboys, it isn\'t so though. For the most part, we are all multi-console owners or possible multi-console owners..
  • I don\'t hate you. Don\'t put words into my mouth / posts. Thank you.
  • That was not a worthless quote. That quote proved the point, that if you are going to review a product, you need to be unbiased, something you clearly are not. Simple, eh?

thanx for addressing me in a more respectful way...
keep im mind, i said the gamecube is a dissapointment to ME...not to america or the world...i am a multi-console gamer myself...and ive been around since the atari days and tried out every console...i am NOT a ps2 fanboy,   and just because i bash nintendo it doesnt mean i pull for sony because i will be getting an xbox sometime next year and IF the gamecube improves, IMO,  i will also buy it sometime next year if cash allows...but right now,  since i am a \'graphics whore\' i am utterly dissapointed with the graphics...im disgusted with the music even more in lugis mansion..
im disgusted with the stiffness of rogue leader\'s gameplay (from what i saw in the video) and i havent been impressed at all with anything...so far,  the dreamcast could pull off those games and the DC is over 2 years old...

state your opinion about the games and / or consoles without stating your opinion about me or the rest of the members of this forum that post...this will allow for good debate and discussion without personal insults...YOU go off and tell me to shut up and label me a fanboy and all this other bull-crap and in turn i have to send you to hell...if i wanted to fight id post in the rants and raves section...just keep your opinions on the the topic of the thread and whats being discussed and dont target me for insulting or angry replies...thats all i ask.

about the worthless quote...i mentioned id be unbiased because Eiksirf thought i would be...and i didnt want people to ignore my review just because of my obvious hatred for nintendo...
and i think i did a pretty good job,  whether or nto you agree with me though is a different story...but im not the first to review the gamecube and give it a thumbsdown...scroll back on some of the gamecube posts here and those whove played it and youll read the same thing.

OK I\'ll jump in on this one.

Why do u want a Gamecube anyway?  I mean I understand if you\'re like 14 years old.  But most of us here are 20+ or roundabouts.  Hell I thought Mario was stupid when I was 10.

And I like graphics.  They make the game better.  You don\'t like graphics go get an Atari.

I\'ve heard this same ignorant comment a thousand times, what I think is that graphics are good enough at this point so that gameplay is whats important, I dont fell the need for better graphics, but I wont go pick up an Atari

yes but... GC is a lot easier to program for.  Better tools and libraries than ps2 had when it launched.  We should see something significantly better than PS2 launch.  And we probably will somewhat.  While the GC is not underpowered by any means , it is still limited in its power.  It is only going to be $199.00 and that can\'t all be dvd player (PS2 almost didn\'t get a dvd playback mode, do you think it would have been $199.00)  sometimes you get what you pay for.  In this case it would be a decent console to play all of nintendos exclusives on.  Not bad for $199.00 IMHO

As lestat mentioned in his post, I was alongside him @ toys \'r us.

And we both walked away in disappointment. While he may have a strong dislike for Nintendo, I don\'t. (I hate the Piece of sh!t N64 though.) The point is, lestat is right in his remarks about the GC. (in terms of graphics.)

Yes, the PS2 had a horrible launch, plagued with crappy looking games. And it got mocked, just as every console will get mocked. Do the opinions stay the same forever? No. But you must remember that first impressions are very important, for the most part, and in this area, the GC has failed to impress me.

Nintendo lads have spoken so highly of their GC, and how the PS2 can\'t handle the current games and whatnot. Or how the lighting in Luigi\'s Mansion is a godsend, well it isn\'t. I am far more impressed with the lighting in Silent Hill 2 than that of Luigi\'s Mansion.

Textures. This is one area that the PS2 is severely lacking in, and the GC excels. You wouldn\'t think that by looking @ half of those launch games. The only exception being Rogue Leader. Does that mean the GC is weak and will remain a disappointment forever? Hell no. But I am greatly disappointed with the graphics it is delivering @ this point, and this coming from someone who planned on buying it @ launch. I know judging the GC @ this point in time is unfair, but that\'s all it is, an impression of the graphics @ this point in time. Lestat might get his point across in a hostile way (which I don\'t think he did in his first post) but the important part is that he was being sincere.

So if no one wants to listen to my thoughts either, that\'s fine. Does it really matter what anyone thinks anyway? ;)

You don\'t think graphics make a game better?  Then put 2 identical games side by side.  Only difference is one has better graphics.  Which would u choose?

There is always room for improvement.  I\'m not knocking GC\'s graphics, but if we all just stopped working b/c we were satisfied we would never see improvement.
