Digital Camcorder?
« on: October 18, 2001, 09:55:42 AM »
My family\'s thinkin\' about replacin\' our 8mm camcorder with a decent digital cam.  I\'m considerin\' the Sony TRV-30 and the JVC-V2000U.  They\'re both under 2k, and are at around the same level as far as film quality is concern.  So maybe some of you own one of those or have knowledge on the digital camcorder area can help me out.  Thanks before hand  ;)

I would go with the Sony way before anything JVC.  I really don\'t know a darn thing about that JVC camera, but Sony puts out a nice product on the digital camera side.  I don\'t like their still cameras, but their video cameras are great.

The TRV-3000 kicks butt.  May be a little pricey for you though.

I\'m looking at the 5000.  It\'s about 13 grand without the lens.  Tack on another 14 grand for a lens and you have a descent digital camera.  Then you have to buy batteries, a charger, blah blah blah...

Well, that\'s without a lens..  My camera when I worked in the news was 34,000.  My tripod was 6500.  Batteries are 750 a piece.  Tapes are 28 a piece and I ran through 6 a day.  The wireless mic is 2000.

My vehicle was worth less than the camera.

The TRV-30 is under $2k and it is a really good DV cam. Probably one of the best consumer grade digital cams out there.

Yeah, that\'s what I was saying in the first post.  The Sony camera is the one.  I would just try to get the 3000 if it\'s at all possible.  That camera kicks ass.  I\'ve used it on some shoots and integrated it into Crank and Chrome and you can hardly tell the difference.  We tweak it a little, but it shoots right up there with the 30-40,000 cameras..  Kind of..  Well, not really, but it\'s great for the price.

I think they shot Lost with DV cams.

I agree.  I saw about ten minutes.  Just didn\'t like the narration, etc...  I like Great Race and Survivor, but that\'s about it.

The fraternity brothers alone are enough for me to keep watching The Great Race. Those guys are hilarious. Oh and Bert and Ernie, what is wrong with those guys?

I have a thing for Canon camcorders... Especially if you\'re doing digital filmmaking in which case I\'d recommend the XL-1s (but that\'s like $3500 I think). The Canon GL-1 is a sweet camcorder too, even if it\'s been on the market for a while. I think it\'s below $2000. But Sony makes decent cams too (at least if you don\'t plan on using their progressive shooting mode).

The XL-1 is a very nice camera.  It\'s a little too front heavy for me though.  It starts to hurt your wrist after a while.  Sony\'s models are balanced nicely, but they don\'t have the lens options you have with the XL-1.  I would still go with Sony though.

we\'re only willin\' to spend 2,000 so the XL-1 is out of the match.

Looking at the descriptions of the two I notice two things right off the bat.  The Sony has a much higher resolution LCD screen.  This makes a huge difference with focusing if you want to use the screen to shoot with.

I also notice that they are both only 1/4" video chips.  The sony though has 1.5 million Pixels where-as the JVC has 680,000.

Sony:

JVC:

The Sony is also cheaper.  Leaving you money for a nice tripod, a wide angle lens, and some batteries.

Canon GL1 is said to be the best cam under $2000.
