Ever fancied yourself as a dojo sensei, enlightening prospective students in the way of the exploding fist? Or maybe you\'d like to create your own customised fighters that\'ll beat your mates to a bloody pulp without you lifting a finger? Then do we have the game for you - Virtua Fighter 4, currently in development for PlayStation 2, is looking very damn fine indeed.

At an exclusive press conference at Sega\'s AM2 building in Tokyo, Virtua Fighter guru Yu Suzuki revealed some of the features exclusive to PlayStation 2. Apart from Vs. Mode and Survival Mode, which we\'ve come to expect thanks to Namco\'s Tekken series, Suzuki-san also revealed a feature that made our eyebrows practically jump off our foreheads. That feature is the Training Mode.

Even hardened Virtua Fighter fans would probably admit that the series can be a little unforgiving on novices, so any kind of training mode is welcome - but the depth of the game does reward those who persist. (To give you an example, VF 4 has over 2,000 moves in the game - although Suzuki-san felt it might actually be as high as 3,000, he just hasn\'t counted them all yet.) The new Training Mode allows you to practice your combos in slow motion, seeing not only the button and move sequences, but also the exact timing of just when your blocks and attacks will have the most effect. To make the process of learning this a little more interesting, there are various trials to pass during your training. (No word on whether or not this includes waxing cars, or catching flies with chopsticks.) This, Suzuki-san was adamant, would ensure that VF 4\'s training mode would be "not boring".

The real scoop comes after you\'re done learning the moves where you can do something unique in fighting games: teach an AI-controlled fighter how to fight. In this mode, called AI System, you can either train the character directly by giving them instructions, or make them face a mirror image of themselves and attack them head-on, answering questions at certain points to determine their behaviour. The better your training, including combos, blocking and the use of certain attacks at certain points, the more deadly your fighter will become.

Then the fun really starts. Your new fighter can be saved to a Memory Card, their looks can be customised (in the Character Edit mode) and you can toddle over to your mate\'s house with card in hand and smug grin on face. Slot it in, load VF 4, and before you can say "That Akira looks like a wuss in white pyjamas" your character could be flooring your friend\'s creation in a Vs. battle, or strutting their stuff taking on all comers in Survival mode. This hands off approach might give you an odd feeling, Suzuki-san admitted, as it\'s not your usual way of playing a fighting game; but if you get an itchy punching finger you can step in as trainer at any point, giving direct orders that will override the pre-determined AI. And surprise the hell out of your friend too, we\'d imagine.

All of this training and fighting business is an attempt by the AM2 team to recreate the sense of community that VF 4 has fostered in arcades, especially in Japan. To our eyes, it\'s a refreshing new twist on the fighting game genre, and one that happily you\'ll only be able to find on PlayStation 2.

Stay glued to the monitor for more details on VF 4, including Character Edit, the look of the game and Yu Suzuki\'s comments on this work in progress.

Sounds cool, but in the end all I care about is if the actual 1 on 1 fighting is good
But yea, the more features the better, as long as they put most of their effort into the core of the game
A schizophrenic patient will not allow anyone to touch them; not because they would do them some harm, but because they might electrocute them.
