Help me housetrain my dog!
« on: November 29, 2001, 09:10:51 PM »
I\'ve put her head by it and yelled at her then put her outside. I\'ve done what I thought you were supposed to do...

but I can put her outside for 2 hours and when she comes back in she will still pee on the floor.

someone give me some better tips on what to do cause i\'m tired of cleaning up the p1ss and crap.

The secret is slow, positive re-inforcement.   Put newspaper down where she pees inside the house.  Teach her to go when you say "pee pee" or some other command (mine do).  Whenever she pees on the newspaper, praise her.  When she pees off it, show your displeasure with body language and tone.
Eventually, wait untill she hasn\'t peed in a while, and with her, take the newspaper outside, put it on the grass.  Use the command, and keep putting her on the paper until she gets the idea.  When she finally pees, praise her highly, give a biscut (etc).
After a few days of her peeing outside, with praise, remove the paper, but make sure you praise her when she pees outside, and show displeasure with accidents.  Dogs like to please, so eventually, they\'ll learn anything, if you are consistant with your language and treats.

What FatalXception said sounds like it will work well, but if you don\'t have the patience to do that, then just keep doing what you\'re doing.  The key is your tone of voice.  If your dog does something bad, use a fearful tone of voice.  When it does something good, use a sweet tone of voice and also give it a treat.  Your dog should start to ketch on pretty quickly if you do that.  And if you had an older, already trained dog, the younger one will catch on much much quicker.

Call 1900 - The - Shape
I met him 15 years ago, I was told there was nothing left, no reason, no concious, no understanding and even the most rudamentory sense of life or death, good or evil, right or wrong, I met this 6 year old child with this blang pale emotionless face and, the blackest eyes, the devils eyes, I spent 8 years trying to reach him, and then another 7 trying to keep him locked up because I realised what was living behind that boys eyes was purly and simply evil.

You have to catch your dog actually doing the pee.  Going after the fact  and showing it to her does nothing.

Just keep an eye on her and scare the living shizit out of her when she does it.  Take her outside immediately and praise her when she goes on the grass.

What am I to say, my dog pees un der my desk.

lol thanks guys.

but Fatal i\'ll give that stuff a shot and I\'ll try a more intimidating kind of voice on her as Iron and vid and others suggested.

I\'d do my fearful Sephiroth voice...but there are a few problems with that...

you hit the nail right on the head! Never punish a dog after the act has been done, always do it immediatly when you catch her doing something wrong. I dont know how old she is but it is VERY important to learn the dog the rules right from the beginning, if possible in the first 2 months or so. learn her who the boss is, rewards also help much

I hope that helps :)

Stick... Beat her with a stick....  No better teaching aid then the fear of pain...

No Im kidding...  You should never hit an animal, human or dog.  (guess what, where all animals)

Be forcefull though, talk with a very stern voice.  Don\'t pet her, make sure she understands your not happy....  She will catch on eventually..

My dog still went in the house sometimes, and he was like 8 too..  But it was not his fault, he would be inside for too long.  But it was funny, becuase normally he would come running to door when I got home, but if he got into the trash or did his business on the rug, he knew he did something wrong, so I would see him with his head down sitting in the kitchen.  He was so funny, I did not even have to look when he acted like that cause I already knew he did something..  I miss him...

I see your problem, we had the same thing when we got our 6 month old second dog. It was hard training him, but it worked. This might be more difficult that you think since she is already used to peeing in the house. And the nose pushing thing really works!

what kind of dog is it anyway? It also depends on the type of dog how fast it learns. Some dogs are easier to train than others

Well you are catching her hopefully right when she starts so that mess will be tiny.

The other mess, well, do you clean pee off the lawn?  That\'s just a tad anal retentive don\'t you think?

What kind of dog is this?

Chances are your dog will keep going around the same area cuz\' it\'s scent will linger. But yeah, you should catch her in the act and say, "NO!" loud, and pissed. Not no queer, pansy "no", you gotta scare the **** outta the dog (not litterally, lol). Then get a nice rolled up magazine, a nice swap on the butt (never hit a dog in the face or when trying to pet it it will duck cowardly away from your hand).

And WALK THE DOG ALOT! Or take him out, when he goes outside praise her and give her a treat. Eventually your dog will catch on, but if it takes longer than 3 months (3 months is the average time believe it or not), your dog is mentally retarded or just plain, "stupid".
