i own an xbox.

A while back, when I was still an avid, ridiculously vocal Nintendo supporter, I indeed owned a Playstation. That didn\'t change the fact that I was an assinine idiot.

This is from an old article

****************************

LOS ANGELES, Nov 5 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) could lose as much as $1 billion on its new Xbox video game console before breaking even in fiscal 2004, an influential Wall Street analyst said on Monday.

Morgan Stanley analyst Mary Meeker said the console faced competition in the short term but had long-term opportunity.

``We believe that Xbox could lose around ($1 billion) ... before breaking even in (fiscal 2004) if the product is reasonably successful,\'\' she said in a note to clients.

The Xbox launches in the U.S. on Nov. 15, in Japan in February and in Europe in March. Three days after the Xbox\'s U.S. launch, Nintendo Co Ltd. will launch its new console, the GameCube, in the United States.

Those two new consoles will compete with the already established PlayStation 2 from Sony Corp. , a unit analysts and industry observers expect to dominate the market this holiday season.

Microsoft has said it will spend as much as $500 million on the initial marketing for Xbox, which will retail for $299, the same price as PlayStation 2 and $100 more than the GameCube.

Microsoft had said it would have between 600,000 and 800,000 units available at launch, but later said it could not be sure. Most industry executives now expect them to ship 300,000 units at launch and 1 million to 1.5 million by year\'s end.

***************************

And yet no one expected Sony to sell 3 million PS2 between November and the end of December! With the rising tide of PS2 owners, most of them won\'t go multiconsole. Remember, the majority of console owners are casual gamers with one console per generation.

If MS doesn\'t break even by 2004, say bye bye MSBox. Since last fall, Sony has been making a profit from the PS2 console alone + royalties from games. And when PS2 price drops this Spring, since they can afford to, expect MORE PS2 sales to take the market share away from MS! That\'s good news, doncha think? :D

Life is good. Sony rules.

TAKE THAT BYATCH! :D

It\'s not over, and even if the PS2 does have the most units sold at the end of the generation does it really matter.  I sure as hell don\'t care.  I don\'t think any rational person really though MS could usurp Sony in two months.

This isn\'t a race to the end of the month.  It wasn\'t intil the final year of the 16bit era that SNES finally outpaced Genesis.  The Genesis was beating quite handedly until about the 3rd year.  MS has been out for 2 and a half months.

How long did it take for IE to overtake Netscrap?  Several years.  You know it might not even be until teh generation after this that xbox takes over.  It might not ever happen, but I know one thing, it hasn\'t been this interesting in quite a while.

With MS\'s determination, $$ and track record, counting them out when by EVERY report the xbox is exceeding expectations is premature.

Do you remember how long it took the original PS to overtake?  I believe it was somewhere around 18 months, maybe a little less.  Once it caught on, everyone had to have one...and look what happened to the new comer in the console business...

overtake what?  the SNES? sega saturn?

the PS1 revolutionized gaming as we knew it. it blew away ALL efforts before. what is xbox doing?  beefing up the graphics a little, nothing more.  a miniscule difference. something we\'de expect for a console coming out a year later.  the xbox was hyped as the PS2 killer, the be all-end all of gaming.  it i feel it fell way short of that

This all sounds way too familiar.  Having been a huge DC fan, I remember the exact same arguements against DC and PS2.
The PS1 didn\'t "revolutionize" gaming.  It merely raised the bar...Revolutionize is a big word, and I don\'t think it applies to any console...

And how long did it take before the gaming public realized that PS1 was were its\' at?  And what brought about this "revolution" as you name it.  What other than the games, the PS had an amazing, original, and diverse line of games that could suit anyone\'s taste.

And what happens to be your idea of miniscule?  Like I said before, I still don\'t see a PS2 game coming close to Halo or DOA3.

Could it have been your own perception or expectations that weren\'t met, I think so.  The media/gamers hyped it...Everyone had their own idea of what Xbox was going to be.  I remained pessimestic after what I thought was a piss poor performance of what is PS2...but Xbox suprised the hell out of me and I couldn\'t have asked for anything more.

Truth be told the xbox is selling along the same line as the PS2 did in the States and it has a much better lineup of games.  And I\'ll second the opinion that there has been nothing like Halo on PS2 and nothing nearly as pretty as DOA3 (let\'s not get into a gameplay debate).  Then you look at games coming out in Feb/march and since graphics are the only thing we can talk about for those games--the PS2 can\'t touch them.  Compare  two month old PS2 games to xbox games today.  There is none.

The xbox doesn\'t need to sell any more consoles, it\'s doing fine so long as it keeps up.

PSX did revolutionize console gaming.

No one had ever played a 3D fighting game before....until Battle Arena Toshinden. No one had ever played a true 3D flying game before, until Warhawk and Ace Combat came out. No one had ever played a true 3D racing game before...until Wipeout was released. Those were amazing games for its time. Revolutionary.

Evolution...merely the next step.  And your mistaken...Virtua Fighter was the first 3D fighting game way before PSX was about.  3D racing?  try virtua racing...again, way before PSX was out.

And I might be wrong, but didn\'t Saturn launch in Japan before PSX and had Virtua Fighter as a launch game?  This is irrelevant though...

PSX was not the first to do 3D...that\'s my point.

Virtua Fighter "looked" 3D. But in no way did it play 3D. No sidestepping feature. Both opponents were on an "invisible narrow stage". Play it again, you\'ll see.

Virtua Racing....ah...yes, you\'re right. On Arcade. I do believe the console version was just a shadow of the actual game. You\'re better off saying "Sega Rally". That, I\'ll give to you.

But still, PSX was revolutionary. If you don\'t think so, than nothing\'s been revolutionary since NES.

We are talking about console here, not arcades. Correct?

NES was not even revolutionary...

But my point stands...PSX was not the first to introduce 3D.
So why is it revolutionary again?
