"It\'s all speculation," Michael Hara, Nvidia vice president of investor relations, said of Microsoft\'s plans for the next version of the Xbox. But he also pointed out that decisions on the next Xbox are likely to come later rather than sooner.

Responding to a question at the Robertson Stephens technology conference, Hara suggested Microsoft is unlikely to release a new version of Xbox in the next year or two because it will take that long to recoup through royalties some of the money it is losing on the game console.

Rumors about Nvidia losing out on the next version of Xbox began floating around last week, as Microsoft was kicking off its Xbox launch in Japan. The companies shares closed at $49.92 Friday, down 19.7% from Feb. 14, when it reported earnings. Nvidia\'s shares rose 7.8% Monday to close at $53.83.

M$ stock down 19.7% ? and nvidia stock up? BWUHAHAHAHA!
perhaps nvidia should be the one to ditch the other and get on the PS3 project

yep, this is not good news for them. I think if they want to stand any chance, they\'d better hold on to Nvidia.

IMHO, Microsoft is going down. The PS2 has sold far too many to just loose it like this. And in a few years from now, I think Xbox 2 will stand an even smaller chance to fight for the number 1 spot against Sony. Sony has got way too many big companies on their side (Toshiba, IBM, Macromedia, Realplayer, AOL etc) and all of them will be doing a fair amount to make that broadband network they\'re working on a success. Where does Microsoft fit in here? I doubt that they will stand any chance alone.

Thanks for the news. BTW: where\'s Bossieman been? haven\'t seen him for a while?!

We will all be sorry if Sony is the last one standing. Not because they will make a bad console but because there will be no competition to force them to do better.

We will all lose.

The more consoles the better.  I don\'t want to see MS "win" necessarily, but I would like to see the competiton stay afloat.  I am sorry if I don\'t talk about the GCN, but I feel that caters to a different segment in the gaming community.  When my son gets old enough to play games I am sure his first system will be one made by Nintendo.

I\'d rather see the Dreamcast and PS2 fighting it out for the #1 position (65% & 70% market saturation respectively) and have Nintnedo and Microsoft keep a strong market presence. (35% & 45% market saturation respectively). That idea\'s blow to hell now tho, so I guess put Microsoft in Sega\'s spot and have Nintnedo trail by having 45-50% Market Saturation.

Seems like a good balance to me, based on my personal preferences of course.

Another glowing endorsement for xbox from Seven.  Give it a rest.

MS isn\'t going anywhere.  Look how long it took them to dominate the browser market.  They are a big company with deep pockets and a lot of patience.  They almost can\'t fail.  They won\'t catch Sony this generation or maybe not even next, but they will be a big player.

yeah, it\'s a shame really. Competition is always a good thing - but think about it: it will happen sooner or later that one company will stay on top. Sony has done it with PSX and PS2 is on a great start. It\'s not necesserally the companies fault (MS, Nintendo or Sony\'s) but it\'s also the developers that prefer to work on one system.

Only working for one system has some good advantages:
  • ease of development - they learn the system
  • only one system to develop for, costs less
  • no sloppy and unmotivated ports
  • more competition within one console == better games
  • cheaper for the gamer, only needs one console

Of course the rise in technology won\'t be as high as it would be with competition... but I still think that one company eventually monopolizing the game-industry again is inevitable.

Have you read anything about the future plans of Sony? I agree that they are a big player (for now anyway) - but if Sony playes it right up until PS3 and further - IMO they won\'t be big contender anymore.

Seven, we shouldn\'t forget the powerhouse that Nintendo was up until the SNES.  They had dominated the market with two systems (though it was a close battle with the Genesis) then were overtaken by Sony.  MS isn\'t going anywhere for the time being and I welcome it.  We definitely don\'t want to go back to era of one dominate machine like Atari 2600.  That is how games like ET get made and landfills in New Mexico get filled :P

There seems to be a few here who think Sony has been around since day one in the console game.

no I don\'t think that Ace. I just pointed out why only supporting one console is better for the developer (and in the end also better for the gamer to a certain extend). Why again did Capcom go NGC exclusive with Resident Evil? Why are there exclusives anyway?

I\'m not saying that competition is bad. Of course it isn\'t. ;)

This might be an interesting read for some of you in here (I think Bossieman posted this a while back):

Outfox the Xbox

Here are some interesting quotes:
Quote
The battle between Sony and Microsoft is not over games. It is over the future of the internet.
The fracas pitting Microsoft against Sony against Nintendo seems to be over which one has the better videogame console. But there is more at stake: the fate of the internet. That\'s the view of Ken Kutaragi, 50, the designer of the Sony PlayStation who is the president of Sony Computer Entertainment, the $6.5 billion games division that within a year will provide more than a third of Sony Corp.\'s $6.5 billion in operating profit.
Quote
In May, Kutaragi made alliances with AOL, Cisco, Sun Microsystems and IBM to promote open standards for video and games over high-speed networks. Noticeably absent: Microsoft, Sony\'s erstwhile ally in an earlier bid to make PCs the center of the entertainment world. By early next year PlayStation 2 will be ready to tap internet content using such standards as Sun\'s Java, Macromedia\'s Flash and RealNetworks\' media player software. Gamers will get access to AOL to use its e-mail and Instant Messenger.

But these are baby steps. Sony\'s digital convergence masterstroke will be the PlayStation 3, a few years out. PS3 will be more network than box. The brains behind PS3 will be an extremely fast "supercomputer on a chip," now in joint development by Sony, IBM and Toshiba at a well-guarded lab in Austin, Texas. The chip will function as both a network server and a game processor and reside either at a central location or in hardware in individual homes. Games will no longer come in packages but will be played directly with other gamers over speedy fiber-optic links.

Sony will stop charging licensing fees to game developers and will make money only from sales of its own games and hardware, all fitted with the chips necessary to play games pulled down from the web. "Who wants to pay $1,000 to $2,000 for a Pentium PC when a $100 tv can do the same thing?" the Sony exec says.

well, I guess I\'m bored... but this is quite interesting stuff. There\'s more (CNN reported a while back) but I\'ll have to find the link first.

Yes but Nintendo managed to fuc|< it up.
The Ultra64 got delayed, they choose a hard-to-develop-for system, they chose the expensive and dumb cartage media..

PSX just looked better from a developers point of view.
Plus Nintendo had to go in and mess with the 3rd party developers, trying to say who could support them and who could not ect.

I dont see Sony doing anything like that right now.

There are exclusives because of money--that\'s it.  MS has lots of money.

Everytime the word Microsoft appears in a thread we get about 10 posts saying
