So you tell us not to argue about whether bowling, or other such activities are sports, then you turn around and directly insult someone?  That makes a lot of sense.

Well, I believe I made my opinion quite clear, I believe your opinion, is much less common sense.

It is your opinion[/i] that:

if cheerleadings a sport then everything must be

So that means you apply no thought process or common sense to anything, you\'ve just decided to lump everything into a big ball of \'sports\'.  As such, I believe that we know your response to any more of our opinions, so you can just stay out of the rest of the discussion.

To the others, I wonder if there is some criteria we could use to define a sport... or if there will always be a shady border dividing hobbies from sports.

I was thinking, though I\'m sure this won\'t work in anywhere near to the majority of cases, that hobbies are things you are able to do or enjoy by yourself.  I\'m thinking videogaming, bowling, etc.  However, if you require others to be able to play properly, maybe then it could be a sport?  Baseball, hockey?

Of course, then you hit the gray area again.  Golf?  If it is a sport, it fails that test.  Figure Skating, if it isn\'t a sport, it passes it.

Perhaps sports are a culmination of requirements, like
1) Competetive
2) Atheletic
3) Organized

But again, I think that gray cases for either side will never fit into a structured mold, it comes down to your values, and what you believe to be a sport.  I can\'t define what makes up my mind, but I definitely \'know\' what I consider a sport or not....

actually it just means your a dumbass.. and you shouldnt exactly tell me to stay out of a sports discussion since i know more about sports than you. if you say videogamings a sport and cheerleadings not.. then you got issues.  the whole cheerleading comment was sarcasm anyways, way to pick up on that genuis.  anyways i didnt just decide to call everything a sport.  if you just think.. well sorry you mite have problems with that, but IF you could just put some thought process behind this and you didnt feel the need to insult everyone who said sometin against your beliefs of videogaming sports then you would realize that just because the 4 major sports.. soccer, football, baseball, and hockey are more physical than most, it doesnt mean that every sport has to be.  theyre more popular BECAUSE they are so physical.  you dont have to knock the **** outta someone just for it to be called a sport. and just because part of a sport includes mental and physical ability to play a sport it doesnt mean that you can call everything a sport either. like i said use ur \'common sense\' and dont be stupid about it. there has to be rules, scores, competition, etc. its not just physical  strength and mentality.
so use your \'common sense\' before you put up another reply dissing a sport just because you feel the need to contradict everything i say.  and in some cases, bowling and pool isnt a sport. theres bowling and pool, and competitive bowling and pool. if you played in a bowling league, then youre in a sport. if youre by yourself, youre not. if youre shooting 9 ball for fun, not a sport. you join a pool league, its a sport. all part of \'common sense\' my friend.  i think ive said enuff for now
peace.

They way I look at it..or any other questionable *sport* If people compete  in it..its a sport, if ppl gamble on it..its a sport.

Perhaps you should actually read entire posts and threads, then, before you reply.

Videogames, btw, for me are still 100% hobbies.

I never insulted you, I simply said you had made your views clear.  If you plan to use sarcasm in the future, perhaps you should back it up by putting it in a context where it will be seen as sarcasm.

You need to learn to participate in a discussion of opinions.  One thing you should realize is that I, and most people, can\'t actually STATE that someone else\'s opinion is WRONG.  I may disagree with other\'s opinions, but I will almost always respect their opinion.  If you ever expect to change someone\'s opinion, or get them to further understand and see your point of view, you will need to learn to talk about your opinion, and the opinion of others without using the words "dumb***" or "sucks".  You need to realize that common sense, while \'common\', is still different for everyone, and that it\'s based on values and opinions that aren\'t shared homogeniously throughout society.

Perhaps when you\'ve understood that you will be able to futher contribute to threads where opinions, points of view, and personal values are being discussed.

As for sports, I believe that there are the \'true, 100% sports\', things like baseball, hockey, alpine racing and such.  There are gray area activities that are closer to sports than hobbies, golf, cross country skiing, figure skating.  There are gray area activities closer to hobbies than sport, bowling, pool.  Then there are the hobbies, video-gaming, hot-pepper-eating, recreational bycicle.
Any activity will have some of the trappings and properties of a sport, and some from a hobby, so you have to allow your own judgement to place them into a category.  That judgement, being personal and an opinion, is free to change, and I will not likely consider other people\'s way of thinking wrong - just different from my own.

Yes that is what I\'m saying. Anyone can play golf, anyone who knows how to swing a stick and hit a ball can play golf. But you have to be in great physical shape to play football. I\'d like to see you go 60 minutes as an NFL lineman. You\'d roll over and die.

jesus the O. Line is one of the hardest things to play. you play with just about any injury and you have to go against guys twice your size sometimes. on the o line you cant use your hands and it requires some of the best balance ever. d line has it a little bit easier since theyre allowed to use their hands, so no doubt the line is alot harder than golfing

First of all, O line men can use their hands.  Just not in all ways.  Anyone can play any sport.  However, not anyone can play a given sport well.  I never said O line is easy to play.

As for a sport being something that you need other people to play with in order to play it properly, I disagree with that.  I can enjoy snowboarding alone, and I\'d consider that a sport.  Bsically, I think my final definition of sport it this:

A competitive activity governed by a set of rules which is based in physical activity.

I have no doubt that golf is a sport.  If you say that just anyone can play it, and play it well, then you don\'t know much about the sport.  A 100 year old man might be able to play it, but he couldn\'t play it well.  A 100 year old man could be a baseball player too, he just wouldn\'t be good at it.  Golf does take physical ability to play.

Nice Ice, you have to learn that message boards are for discussing things.  People will have opinions different from yours all the time, but they are just that, opinions.  No one here has said anything stupid, except for maybe you, in calling our opinions stupid.  No one is going to listen to anything you have to say if you post like that.

My whole view on this is that if you compete in it and it is somewhat orginized then it qualifies as a sport. If it requires physical and or mental training/practice, in my mind its a sport.

Well one thing I do not understand is. Billiards is somewhat like pool with you have a white ball hitting all kinds of different balls. But is it just me, Why don\'t many blacks bowl? I mean come on where else can you have a black ball knock down "white" sticks of lumber? But then NAACP is still in effect. Nobody please take this personal.
