"Microsoft Starts Recall of Xbox Video-Game Console in Japan on Scratching
Microsoft Corp. is recalling the Xbox video-game console in Japan because of a defect two weeks after its debut in the country, setting back its entry into the home turf of rivals Sony Corp. and Nintendo Co"

But I thought they said that the scratches were a natural effect from the friction between the laser lens and the disk.

Oh well, hopefully they have learned their lesson eh?

Hay this isn\'t funny. Lots of peeps will have bought X-Box\'s on launch and now they don\'t work.

Game companies as a whole need to get there act together. Im not getting a console on launch ever again, not after the PS2.

I for one agree with you man, but until we as the consumer demands better product, we the consumer will have to settle for whatever the console companies give us. The demand on the console manufacturer is so great that they are willing to do whatever it takes to get their product out the door.

Bill Gates has his own take on this outlook, His motto is “Package, Publish, Edit”. In short, he would rather get the product to you then work out the bugs, rather than work out the bugs then get the product to us.

This will always be the case as long as there are tens of thousands of people waiting at the door of their local electronics store for the newest console on the release date. Sad, but true.

hmmm.. I guess the bugs from their OS jumped to their console

If this news from bloomberg is true, the xbox is offically dead in japan.. the japaneese were unsure of the xbox as it was (along with japaneese 3rd parties). You add a recall into the mix... the confidence of this "foreign console" went from near zero to absolute zero.

Well.. maybe its not offically dead.. but your nuts to think it has much of a chance anymore

Are you certain that the problem was to do with disc scratching? I heard it was to do with MS sending out VCRs by accident.

Ouch...  Well I hope the Microsoft reps over there are prepared for the backlash.  Say half of every sold launch console comes back defective... that\'d be like 6 or 7 consoles!  Talk about a corporate nightmare.

There is one company that actually takes time to make sturdy, working consoles, controllers, memory cards, software, etc...  Its name escapes me for the moment, tho. ;]  If it comes back to me I\'ll let you know.

Ohhhh, you must mean Sega...

Certainly can\'t be Nintendo...

*cough* NES *cough*
July 2002: If you had bought $1000.00 worth of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00. Enron, $16.50 left. Worldcom, $5.00 left. If you had bought $1,000.00 worth of Budweiser beer one year ago, drank it all and turned in the cans for the 10 cent deposit, you would have $214.00. Based on the above, my current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

Amazing...

Ok I can understand how some of the PS2 zealots here wanted to "win" the "console war", but really...

PS2 had a year head start and made the system backward compatible.  IMHO the compatibility issue alone clinched it for them.

Granted I enjoy my PS2 more than my Xbox, I want both to do well.  Hopefully by this time next year the Xbox will have more "AAA" games and pull some of the market share back their way.

I like having choices - sorry if that offends some of you ;)

Damn its still hard to believe its been over 2 years for the PS2...
