Xbox launch in Europe
« on: March 16, 2002, 10:34:13 AM »
Okay, I checked the threads and there\'s nothing on top that\'s really about the Xbox sales in Europe, so I started a new one. Perhaps we can keep all the sale figures of Xbox\'s in Europe in here...

Anyways, for those who are interested, I found some news on the Xbox launch in Germany:

Quote

Eventhough Microsoft made quite a big effort to make it a big launch in Europe, it wasn\'t enough to impress people especially in Germany. The retailers apparently were only able to sell roughly 2% of Xbox\'s that got in for launch.

The situations proved to be slightly different in England though, where people at least gathered infront of shops to get their Xbox.

Quote

Another interesting thing is that Media Markt, one of Germanies biggest electronic stores went through a price dumping to get some Xbox\'s sold. They reduced the price from 499 to 299 Euros.

I am not sure and I might be slightly wrong, but 1 euro equals about 1 US-Dollar.

If someone\'s from Germany, could you confirm this (Euro -> US-Dollars)?

€1=$0.882400

Good Conveter

Not good news for MS. I think they were really hoping to sell well in Europe after the desaster in Japan.
They NEED Europe. Lower the price MS. :rolleyes:

Xbox tops PS2 sales in first night
By Deborah Bonello

The launch of Microsoft\'s much-hyped video games console Xbox got off to a strong start yesterday when the entertainment system went on sale at retailers throughout the UK and outran Sony Playstation 2\'s firstly monthly sales in one night.

According to figures from the high street retailer Virgin Megastore, it sold more Xbox consoles in Glasgow during the first night of sales than its rival PS2 did in its first month, despite the retailing price of the Xbox being £100 higher at £300.

HMV also said that sales of Xbox on its launch day were "certainly meeting expectations, and we are on target to sell as planned."

Virgin said that demand for the Xbox was so high that stores opened at midnight in London, Glasgow, Dublin, Manchester and Birmingham yesterday to serve people who had been queuing outside the stores hours before opening time.

Virgin sold over 100 Xbox consoles at each of its locations on Xbox\'s launch night, and its store in Oxford Street sold 250 during the launch night and a further 70 before lunchtime that day.

The launch of Xbox has been heavily marketed by Microsoft, which kicked off a TV ad campaign last week through BBH. An online viral marketing campaign for the system has been running for several weeks.

Microsoft has come under fire for some of its marketing initiatives. The computer giant has been accused of giving preference to its own in-house computer games and software above those of its competitors.

Playstation 2 is expected to present Xbox with stiff competition, and Microsoft has received a number of complaints following the launch of Xbox in Japan in November that the console scratches DVDs and CDs.

One of my friends went down to the launch in London, and he stood inline for ages, but he left empty handed, as you couldn\'t get one any where.
I think this is great news, as the more compatition each comapny has from each other the better for us guys the gamers.
Also i am not surpried that it sold ok, as i don\'t stop playing my Xbox, i still love my PS2,with FFX, MGS2 and DMC but i just keep going back for more Xbox, Halo, PGR, JSRF and Rallisport, god i love being a gamer at the moment.
I just can\'t wait to get my Hands on Resident Evil for GameCube, that game is looking very impressive.
On the 15 of March 2002, i was going to leave these forums for good.
But on the 16 of March i realised i couldn\'t ever say bye to you guys, so i am staying here for good!

In my town one of the big stores (Saturn) reduced the price to €399. The Media Markt price was €479. I should take another look on monday, for €299 i`d get one.

No, no, no Pstwo...

X-BOX is selling pretty bad here; a shame if you ask me, but that\'s the truth.

Everybody\'s complaining about the incredible high price of both, system and games.

X-BOX---------> 422.72 USD

Controller----->   35.26 USD

Mem. Unit----->   44.08 USD

DVD kit-------->    44.08 USD

Game---------->    61.77 USD

So you have to pay 607.91 USD just for the system and 1 game (731.45 USD for the system and 3 games). Even if you don\'t buy an extra controller, the DVD kit and the Memory Unit, you still have to pay    484.49 USD for the X-BOX+Halo.

That\'s a joke. It seems that MS thinks that we\'re going to pay for the lower prices in Japan and the US.

Well, we\'re glad to help MS :rolleyes:

PS: I wanted a X-BOX at launch, but after this...
Maybe next year.
Whatever

I don\'t have any figures, but I don\'t think it sold amazingly well here. I read a feature about the launch in a big electronics store, but most of the people waiting in line was from the press... only a few people actually waited for an Xbox (at midnight mind you).
RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAPETIME!
(thanks Chizzy!)
