Decided to do the old rent a game play it hardcore like until its completed before returning it.
Out of a few unplayed gems of ICO, DMC and Baulders Gate: DC I decided to get DMC.
Heres my review...
Well you might be thinking the name Devil May Cry sounds strange well its because a devil may actually cry when they meet the hero of the game because hes son of this legendary knight Sparda. You think thats bad? Well the whole story is as small as it is lame.
Done by Capcom heros of the Survival Horror genre (although i\'d like to think that Konami has this title now after the amazing Silent Hill 2) this game runs to a same sort of vien. Some story, go kill monsters and be scared. Be scared though? No actually thats wrong this game is an action game. Go kill monsters get a snippet of story and go kill other monsters.
Now this sounds like its going to get boring... well it does! Well this isn\'t the games major downfall as for the most part killing this endless respawning monsters is fairly fun. You get orbs you see (complete copy in everyway to Onimusha Warlords). Like Onimusha Warlords different coloured orbs do different things, and you can get new moves and health items etc from these shop like things.
Now it sounds like I haven\'t told you much about what you do in the game but thats because unfortunatly that is all you do. Kill monsters get the orbs, upgrade the character and kill more monsters to snippets of story.
Well the upgrading the character is fun as you get new moves. However far too few for it to be that rewarding. You have to learn the tactics of fighting to beat the harder monsters and these tactics are summerised in your inventory area depending on what moves you have tried on the monsters. Soon you will be kicking devil butt and quite enjoying the game.
However like the games of old its one of these play the game for 20 minutes die and then end up having to retrack back from the save point (the start of the level - unless you have a yellow orb which I can write a further paragraph explaining how stupid they are...). This is definatly no way of making a game hard, it may do this... however it also makes the game infuriating and literally unfun to play. You see between save points you might have to fight 3 or 4 bosses. This game along side football games has prehaps seen me cursing at the ps2 the most. Sometimes i\'d get someplace killing all the bosses as I go, get to the final one, die, start again and then find im having trouble killing the first ones. Once you get to the next save point you had that nice relief of finally im there but its short lived as soon you will be backtracking again. Its not that I died a lot in this game its just that sometimes you do die in it, and when you do you will be sorry.
The graphics on the other hand are great. The PAL conversation is crap (nice one Capcom) but the graphics still shine as something nice.
The story of the game is another letdown. First a women smashes through your shop window. Then your in a castle, then a pirate ship (don\'t ask????) then fighting something else all with snippets of story which seem fake and just placed there for the hell of it, they don\'t even explain why theres a pirate ship just where the castle is.
I can\'t see what the hype of this game is. I love the free roaming jump feature and the fast action gameplay. However Onimusha Warlords is so much better. Devil May Cry is nothing more than a shallow beatemup (allmost). Its a suckish conversation, the story for this game would be better not being there, its infuriating at moments and we\'ve seen it all before. Onimusha Walords was the game which broke Capcoms Resident Evil mold. This breaks it too but breaks everything good about Resident Evil.
The thought of playing this game now makes my stomach turn.
5/10 - Just because it has nice graphics and some good gameplay bits. The low score though is due to its repetitive, dullness, the fact that this £45 game (read: expensive) can be completed in a day or so and its infuriating qualities.
Verdict: A very dull Onimusha Warlords.
