Many were surprised to learn that Argonaut was developing a version of Malice for the PS2. Considering how strongly Microsoft promoted the game, the fact that it would emerge on other platforms was surprising indeed. But Argonaut and Sierra are determined to make Malice\'s presence as widely-felt as possible, and bringing it to the PS2 is the most logical step.

[screenshot]
The Shadow-Caster engine has been reworked to run on the PS2.
From what we\'ve been told, Argonaut has fully converted its internal Shadow-Caster engine to work on the PS2. While we\'re eager to see it for ourselves, the details that Argonaut has released sound quite impressive on paper. Full details are listed below, but rest assured: environments will feature pretty hefty poly counts, and everything will run at 60fps. You\'ll have to read on to get the rest of the information. We\'d like to give special thanks to the Argonaut team for answering our questions.

GameSpot: Some stages exclusive to the PS2 port have been mentioned. Can you tell us anything about these?

Argonaut: Well, we don\'t want to give too much away at this stage. There were levels that fit into the game and storyline that were originally designed, and we felt they would work better on the PS2 version. They add a little more depth to the game and provide more challenges and gameplay. We don\'t need to add that these are incredibly gorgeous to look at and really add to the atmosphere of the game.

GS: How well does the Shadow-Caster engine perform on the PS2 hardware?

A: Obviously there isn\'t the hardware to support the exact method we use on the Xbox. Our PS2 engine can draw around 260,000 polygons a frame at a constant 60fps! With this technology, we have a system that works differently but will produce the same visuals. It\'s still being optimized and changed as the algorithm is continually enhanced, but there should be no loss of speed or visual delight.

[screenshot]
As you guide Kat through the huge worlds, things will run at 60fps.
GS: Did you have to make any compromises to ensure that Malice would run well on the PS2?

A: The only compromises are with the technology. We have no features such as hardware bump mapping, so we\'ve had to create an equivalent in software without any performance degradation. The PS2 has been out long enough now, whereby our teams are able to produce some astounding quality in their work.

GS: Have any of the game mechanics changed with the PS2?

A: As it stands at the moment (excluding the additional levels), the gameplay mechanics are the same. There may be some tweaks and changes a little later on, but at the moment, it remains the same. This was a conscious decision, as the original gameplay is quite excellent. It has been designed in line with the story and characters and sound and everything--a careful balance to provide the best gameplay experience within the game. Changing it may compromise this balance, and that\'s not something that we wanted to risk.

GS: Which version do you feel most faithfully represents your vision for the game?

A: Both versions are a strong representation of how the original next-generation version of the game was planned. Obviously with the extra content in the PS2 version, we\'re a little closer to what we want to get in, but, as always, we have time against us and we want to give the game players the most fulfilling experience within the Malice world.

Now that most of the Exlusives are now multi console I wonder if x-box will be able to survive with the developers not making any exclusives.

Overall this is bad news for X-Box Fanboys. And the MS.
1.FF7
  2. Grandia
  3. MGS
Is it me? Or does PSone own all the other systems?

First of all wreckless and some other game that is not important goes multi-console and that means all the developers are jumping ship? Oh please that is stupid and rediculas to say.

Second Cloud malice was been said a long time ago to be multi-console. So this very very old news.  Microsoft was once going to publish this game for xbox. But for some reason decided not too. Thus rumors of the game going to other consoles came about.

Anyways Malice was built from the ground up on xbox. It will not look the same on any other console. So if it does go it won\'t be the same.

I see you call people stupid a lot for their pro-PS2 slant on things.  Perhaps you should realize that:

A) This is a PS2 dominated board.
B) You DON\'T know what it will look like on PS2.  Personally, if they have to software processes like bump mapping, I think they\'re probably going to have to make that up somewhere else, and that\'ll be difficult, but not impossible.  I\'m sure that these guys know what they\'re doing, and even if it\'s not "the same," it may be close enough that it doesn\'t matter.
C) He didn\'t say DEVs are jumping ship (we know they aren\'t), and his view that this \'could be the beginning of the end\' is just that... his viewpoint.
D) The way Wreckless has been Xbox promoted (the commercial states "only on XBox," which is true... for now), it is a surprise that MS would allow this title to go multiconsole, since it\'s one of their better selling games right now.

Actually, I thought it was their BEST selling game for the past few months..

I guess this game is rather insignificant.. that, or everything sucks so bad on the xbox that this was the best thing to buy... hmm

In other words, if this game is unimportant, why is it selling so well on the xbox..

If it comes to the PS2, I\'m not going to buy it. Just the premice of controlling a 6 year old girl with pink hair and a big hammer does not capture me.

So you think wreckless is a big game franchise??????? MGS was only on ps2 now it\'s going to xbox. You are just so freaking bias. I don\'t see how anything you post can be tooken seriously because there is a xbox bias in everything you say about the console.

You call me pathetic but you waste your time bashing a console. What are you in grade school?? You fail to see the potential in another console. Your acting like a blind fool.

Like it or not MGSX has already been announce for xbox and every game site has it listed as a future xbox game.

Weren\'t we all comparing pics of the two versions?

The PS2 version had sucky shadows.

Didn\'t we discuss this already?  Or am I dreaming things again?

Umm yeah I think so. It\'s it does look like crap so far on ps2. But this game was designed for xbox. And ppl are making a big deal out of Malice like it is a platformer. I am looking forward to the game. But it\'s not big deal. Well not just yet anyways.

This thread is now LOCKED!!!

At least it would be if I was a mod.  There is no reason for all of this childish name calling and meaningless bashing.

this is a Stupid thread !

but it does show the new trend for Inter Console B£tching

now that the "Flop BOX" thing is old hat

we are now seeing "Games" being ported to the PS2 that were once exclusive.

and the responce that MGSX is comming

but as we all know

that this is both Cr@P !

for example

the 3rd party X box developers are going multi platform to get more MONEY on an established system !

and as for MGSX!

oh come on this has been talked about for the past year and its STILL VAPOURWARE (we have yet to see any shots of this game yet) last i heard was that it was just going to be a remake of Metal Gear Solid from the PSX.

Also i would be too quick to jump on the MGSX Will an X box eXcvlusive band wagon, because we all know what happend to the So Called (Sillent Hill 2 X ) remake.

its geting ported to the PS2
