Need a new

I meant to say I need a new TV. I hate when I do that.

Well I went to Tweeter just to check out the look of the TV pictured here (Sony 32" WEGA High-Definition Television Monitor with Flat Picture Tube
Model: KV-32HS20) and they had an HDTV feed going into the set and only one word comes to mind . . . WOW!!!!!

What do you guys think of this set?

Does Sony make any HDTV capable units so if I decide that I want full HDTV I have the option to upgrade the receiver if I want to?

Yea, it\'s a very nice set. However, you might what to consider a set that is 16x9. From what I understand, most future programming will be broadcast in this aspect ratio; HDTV already is. With a 4:3 set you will inevitably face "burn-in" from the black bands if you you chose to view "widescreen" material the way it was intended, that is, for an extendend period of time of course, or your picture can be stretched vertically to fill the screen.

HDTV capable/ready just means that there is no internal ATSC tuner, and that you will have to fork out the bucks for an external HD receiver. So yes, you would be able to upgrade the reciever, though you wouldn\'t probably need to for some time, if at all.

I\'ve purchased this set back in Oct., and though it\'s a little on the pricey side, I have no regrets and have been enjoying it since.

Everything Zav said is correct.  Do Not buy a 4x3 HD set.  It is a total waste.  There is so much widescreen stuff OTA now and with the new Discovery HD Theater channel starting next month we now have 4 channels all HD plus the networks.  Gotta love that.

Sony has some great widescreen stuff.  Make sure if you don\'t buy a direct view tv and you go with a rear projection that you really look at the viewing angles.  There is a real nice Sony for 2500 that is about 50 inches.  You can see nice from all angles.  Very important to look at the angles though, cause unless you are building a room for the tv you will more than likely have all different angles to sit.  Some TVs have a hot spot right in the center and then it fades out on the sides.

How much more is a wide screen going to be?

What are you guys doing for the majority of your 4:3 viewing?
Are you stretching the pic or is there black vertical bars on the left and right? And don\'t you run the same risk of burn-in?

Thanks for the info but I have been thinking about upgrading for so long that my head hurts with the possibilities.

Well I have a front projection that I only use during widescreen stuff. But if I had a RPTV I would probably grey the sides or use the smart zoom.  They only stretch the sides to fill the screen.

It really depends on what kind of tv you watch as to how much 4x3 you will really be watching.  Virtually all of CBS and ABC is widescreen.  A lot of FOX is and some of NBC is.  They just announced 4 more shows are going to HD this summer.  When I got my receiver a year and a half ago there wasn\'t much.  It\'s amazing how much has gone hi def in only about a year.

If you watch MTV, TLC,  and other cable networks you will get a lot of 4x3 material.

When you buy an expensive tv you have to think about what\'s going on in the future.  It would certainly suck if you buy this tv and in 3 years you will find that you are letterboxing more than you would be right now with a widescreen.

Oh yeah, DVDs and PS2 kick ass in widescreen.
