Linux Help Through Books...
« on: May 29, 2002, 02:49:22 AM »
I wish to buy a good book on Linux, but I\'m not sure what kind of Linux is used on the PS2 version of Linux. :shy: Is it Red Hat, or Kondara, or another format? :( Anyway, I want to buy a good book on the type of Linux that the PS2 uses, so I can learn to use it. What books are out there that give good information on learning Linux? Anyone who knows please respond to this thread, thanks. :vader:

I think it\'s based on both? I\'d have to search for the info though..
I\'ll check though and post it here. ;)

"A Practical Guide to Linux" is a good general Linux book for beginners, at least I think so anyway.  It\'s not particular to any distribution though, but that shouldn\'t really make all that much difference.  It focuses mainly on terminal/console commands though so if you\'re looking for an in-depth book on using the different GUI\'s look elsewhere.

Step 1 would be to get familiar with UNIX.  If you know the essential commands, which there\'s only about 25 you need to know, you\'ve got a good start.

The graphical stuff is based on Xwindows.  The best way to learn that is to just use it.  Each distro has their own initialization and Xinit wrapper they use.  RedHat uses /etc/rc.sysinit and Suse just uses /etc/inittab.

If you really want to learn the best way is to d/l an easy distro like RedHat, Mandrake, or Suse and install it and play with it.  For everything you\'ll ever need to do you can probably find help on it at http://www.linuxdoc.org or http://www.linux.org or http://www.linuxnewbie.org

Personally I like RedHat so that\'s the reference manuals I would look for.  If you learn on RedHat you can find your way around Mandrake and Suse and vice-versa as they\'re all RPM-based distros.

Well, everyone is saying that the Linux on PS2 is based off of Red Hat Linux, or at least the Distobutions. I took it upon myself to go out and purchase a Red Hat Linux book, so I will see if it is what I need. I know nothing about Linux right now, :o so I hope to learn more very soon. If anyone knows of some beginner\'s books, please inform me of them. I will try to learn what I can from the one I just bought. :D Any help for beginners would be appreciated. :facelick:
