Who\'s the most important 3rd party?
« Reply #30 on: June 11, 2002, 01:46:38 PM »
How can any of you even think that Rockstar is a moderatly important third party? They have had how many breakthrough blockbuster games? One and that one is Grand Theft Auto 3 (even tho\' they only published it, right? DMA developed it, if I remember correctly). Either way, what happened to RockStar\'s so-called next "big thing", State of Emergency? It friggin\' flopped. And I personally suspect that after Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, that the GTA  series will start to die down, leaving RockStar doin\' nothing except small games that don\'t sell a lot (Midnight Club, Smugglers Run and etc). They are far from an important third party. They are far from important.

And even though I hate Square and EA, I will admit they are both important third parties due to the franchises they do have. Square has the ultra popular Final Fantasy, Front Mission and Chrono series , that can and does sell systems. EA has their yearly updates to the same ole\' sports games, that for some strange reason also sells systems.

Capcom makes good Horror/Action and Arcade titles

Capcom makes good platformers (MegaMan, anyone?), fighting games (Street Fighter), survival horror (Resident Evil!), action-shooters (Dino Crisis 2), action (Devil May Cry), RPG\'s (Breath of fire series) and soon racing games (AutoMosdella or what the hell ever...;) ).

The variety that they have, with all those franchises allow them to branch out and put out hit after hit - thus making them one of the most (and THE MOST, in my opinion) important third party developers.

Well I think GTA3 is a horribly horribly bad game, but that\'s just me.  State of Emergency is down right awful.  And regardless, they are nothing in Japan, and I too believe them to be a flash in the pan here.

That\'s why I say Square\'s worldwide appeal to gamers (across all genres) isn\'t at the level of a Sega, Capcom, EA or even Konami.  I think we may see EA sliding a bit in the near future.

There sports games are loosing some of their shine, and their work is really very sloppy.  Sega Sports will soon eclipse EA\'s and with all Sega\'s other franchises, Sega could move into a very profitable position.

Are you asking or implying that madden does outsell NFL2K by a large margin?

I would like to know myself...

I don\'t know the sales numbers, but eventually people will get tired of the same thing every year.

Fever is not that bad a football game.  It\'s inferior, yes, but it doesn\'t have that far to go.

I think there are 2 most important 3rd parties: Rare and Squaresoft.  None of the others have made games that I could see myself buying a console for.  However, I bought a PSX for squares games, and for the longest time only had final fantasies and chrono cross for it.  I know others who bought N64 for Rare\'s games (especially Goldeneye).  No other third parties seem to me that they have that much of an impact.  I would say Capcom comes after them, and the rest are way behind.

Read the thread, or skim over it.

Rare is a second party to Nintendo and doesn\'t have a place in this discussion.

Can someone explain what a Second party developer is?

i was under the impression Rare are actually listed officially as a 3rd party

Which is why there are so many rumours of them making games on PS2/Xbox.. its not just hope, its the possibility that i could actually happen..

Well on occasion they publish their own games, so technically, they\'re a third party.

1. Square (FF)
2. Capcom (Megaman)

Honorable mentions:  Sega, EA, Konami, THQ

The 3D ones sucked. Nothing can compare to the MegaMan and MegaMan X series (2D). Though the last MegaManX left a lot to be desired.
