PS2 sales worldwide as of May 2002 (source: SCEE Press Releases):

USA 11.3 million units
Japan 9.9 million units
Europe (Inc. Oceania) 8.8 million units

PSOne sales worldwide as of July 2001 (source: SCEE Facts and Figures under SCEE History)

USA 32.90 million
Japan 18.79 million
Europe (Inc. Oceania) 33.75 million

So you could say the PAL territories are bigger.. ;)

i think europe is a bigger market in the long run, yet i still dont why sony does\'nt give due attention the pal reigon\'s. and further more i think why america has most consoles sold is coz of the fact that alot of people import american consoles as games get released much sooner (as u all know) on ntsc format rather than pal

US sells more software, too.

and Japan is NOT that important to a system\'s success, s was detailed by password username at GA. Only 2 of PS2s top 10 games of 2001 were made in Japan (sold in America), only 1 XBox game, and 4 GC games.

American and European developers have eclisped Japanese developers as in amount of games put out, but in most cases, not the quality of the content. Therefore the Japanese market is becoming less important in the overall picture and more redundant everyday. Especially when games like Hamster Toro, Dating Simulator 2145, etc. Sell hundreds of thousands of copies that would otherwise sell worse than Rez in other territories.

That\'s true Altered, Software is important and all but people have to have the system for it to be of any success.  If I wanted to start big, I\'d launch in Japan, just for the record Tokyo is the biggest city in the world, 30 million alone there... Japan looks like a good place to start.  Then you\'ve got US and Europe.

It\'s all about getting to the people quickly.

Tokyo is the biggest city in the world? You sure about that?

Regardless, I don\'t think a developer like Sega cares if a game can only sell in one terroritory, as long as it sells. Developers are sticking with XBox (for now) because it has the highest attach rate ever in 8 months after launch, in fact only sits a game below PS2, which has over a year on it.

Sega developed Let\'s Make a Pro Soccer Club with full intention of only releasing it in Japan like NBA2K2 in America (although, amazingly, they brought it to Japan, and it sold like 9,000 copies :))

True Altered, very true.  However over time, if sales pick up, which the past few months, and even the price drop, then developers will start clinging to M$.  If sales get worse for M$, which I don\'t think will happen either, thats when they start looking for new ground.

But we are people, we cannot see into tje future.  Wether things get better for M$ or things go awry it won\'t have an immediate effect.  At the moment, I guess you could describe X-Box as mediocre.  As in, it could be worse.

Wow, an intelligent post by Billy.  I\'m speechless.

Tokyo is the biggest city in the world followed closely by New York; however, socioeconomic status is higher in NY.
