Why do we tip people?

being a waiter isn\'t like being an engineer, conductor, pilot, etc.

A waiter/waitress serves you.  They meet your needs.  They talk to you, suggest meals, they want to be YOUR friend.  They serve you.  You walk off w/ out tipping them, you wont get a good server when you come back.

it\'s called Common  Courtesy.

I work at a restaurant, I know.

You cannot spend your way out of recession or borrow your way out of debt.\" - Daniel Hannan

Some do that. Some are flat out bad at their job. If I get a server who seems to be annoyed with me for having to do their job, their tip will be lower.

Really? From what I have seen..all baggers were on salary and tips from customers are frowned upon.

From what it sounds like you would not tip for things that are beyond their control.  What happens if a server had two luckee\'s.  One at two different tables.  How the hell could they meet all your needs.  Its not possible to have perfect service always, and a lot of times its out of the servers control.  And Luckee, treat people as how you want to be treated.

No, it is quite simple. When I goto a resturant, after being seated by the host/hostess. I expect to asked what I would like to drink while the server passes me a menu. I would like them to check and see if I am ready to order after comming back with the drinks in a reasonable amount of time.

I would like them to make sure my water or other drinks are fresh. I would like to be updated if the cooks are a little behind.
After the meal, I dont want to be waiting around all day for the bill. Seems pretty reasonable huh?

As for the Xtra tip, its nice to be smiled at often and act like my business is appreciated instead of like they are doing me a favor. It is nice to be asked during the meal if Im happy or if I need anything else. Its nice after the meal to be asked how it was//etc..Now those are the things that warrant a $10-15  tip for a $35 meal.

Besides, Im not asking for perfect service..Im asking for adequte service. The perfect service are the ones who get the big tips b/c they have gone above and beyond.

As for treating ppl how I want to be treated? Uhm no..sounds like you have been in the bible too much. I treat others as I have been treated by them.

Well I think nothing warrants no tip unless they

1. Take a shit in your food
2. Cuss at you

You get the point

And grow up with the whole bible comment.

that is where our opinions differ..so what. Do you pay for everything you are not satisfied with? If so, thats stupid. So what if dont share your opinion..deal with it.

As for the bible thing..why is that a need for me to grow. I stated the truth..did I not?

Did you see me say that you did follow the bible? I have respect for people that earn it. In this thread there is nothing about disrespecting ppl...

Just stop looking for reasons to argue with me. I swear you follow me around looking for something to say to me.

On the Food Network (yeah...we watch a lot of food shows) they say "TIPS" stands for:

To
Insure
Proper
Service
And though she be but little, she is fierce.

Tipping is to ensure good service if you return to such establishment.  If you don\'t tip, they remember and vice versa.  If you visit frequently, they get to know you and sometimes it pays off.

For example, there is this one Japanese restaurant and they know me quite well and I get free drinks when I visit or free sides of rice and whatnot.  It\'s just a nice gesture saying thank you for the nice tips I generally give.

What\'s wrong with tipping in general?
Don\'t you ever touch my cape.
