Anyone have this PS2 DVD-playback problem?

Q:  What\'s the newest version of the PS2 that has a tendancy to crap out?  Are the newer ones more reliable?

I\'m just wondering because I intentionally waited to purchase one until I could stand no more... when the GT3/PS2 package came out.

Mine is a launch model, so I can\'t really answer that question.

What\'s wrong with you people?

Take better care of your stuff...

You know Sony makes reliable hardware.
July 2002: If you had bought $1000.00 worth of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00. Enron, $16.50 left. Worldcom, $5.00 left. If you had bought $1,000.00 worth of Budweiser beer one year ago, drank it all and turned in the cans for the 10 cent deposit, you would have $214.00. Based on the above, my current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

I\'ve had my PS2 since launch, and I\'ve never had any problems with it at all. The important thing to remember about any piece of electronic equipment is that you need to keep it CLEAN for it to function properly. This, however, is probably too simple a concept for you to understand.

The ps2 attracts lots of dust, hoovering the front grill and rear fan should help reduce malfunction.

You guys act like a person with over 25 systems doesn\'t keep care of their stuff. My stuff is dust free and I treat it like gold.

I don\'t know how much further from the truth Ashford\'s statement can be about Sony, considering how when you work in retail, the amount of broken PS2s that come in is astonishing. Literally about 10 a week come in broken.

I got mine in January or February and in about December it started giving me problems, soon after the DVD stopped working, then I cashed in my Best Buy PRP on it. Does it offend you that PS2s are easily broken? I find no other reason why you would insult me. If it were just a people problem, we would be seeing XBox and GC come, too. But since I have worked there (11 months), I have only seen 2 XBoxes come back broken and 1 Gamecube.

jacob: Sonic2k thinks just because he has never seen a broken PS2, it doesn\'t exist. If he never sees a white tiger, he\'ll insist it doesn\'t exist either.

Anybody who have EYES can browse through this forum and see how many people have problems with it. and this is just a small sample from the millions of users out there.

I\'ve been to a shop and they have one whole stack of broken PS2 in one corner all ready to send for repair. And I\'m not suprised.

But then again, Sonic2k will still refuse to believe it because he don\'t want to believe it because he\'s a fanboy with blind loyalty.

SUIT YOURSELF.

Exactly where in my post did I deny that there was a problem with some peoples\' PS2s? What I take offense at is the contention that a malfunctioning PS2 is "broken", when in fact there is nothing mechanically wrong with it. Alot of people report that once they clean their PS2, the problem is corrected.
But I suppose these are isolated instances, yes? That we could make the assumption that most owners of malfunctioning PS2s are indepently wealthy and can afford to buy twice or more times.
C\'mon. You sound like one of those Xbox fanboys who says PS2 outsells xbox because you need to buy 2 or 3 of them. Nonsense.
And how exactly am I a fanboy? I own all three consoles and play all of them. Just because I chose to state my opinion about one of them that makes me a fanboy? I don\'t think so.

You email Sony and tell them you are having a problem with your PS2, that it doesn\'t read discs anymore, and after you tell them you have cleaned it, they will admit to them having a problem with broken PS2s and will fix it for free. I believe someone on this very website had an experience VERY close to that.

PS2s were made like crap. I don\'t know if they have since fixed the problem, because the new models have only been out since May.

you also have to take into consideration the PS2 to xbox, GC sales ratio  when comparing defective units

Also remember that people have had their PS2\'s for longer than the other 2, and likely used them for longer periods over a set amount of time. Mines been known to be left on for a month at a time, and still no problem from the first batch PS2.

Lets see how many of the other 2 come back in a years time or so relative to how many have been sold.

There is no excuse for a $300 machine to malfunction after only a year or less.

you think it only happens to PS2\'s

the things we buy are designed to break, no matter what it is

there\'s no excuse for a $60,000 mercedes to break down after 6 months, but it happens.

there\'s no excuse for a million dollar home to get a leaky roof after one week, but it happens

the companies buy parts from the lowest bidder dont forget

we abuse our possessions, thats human behaviour

every time we drop the controller, everytime we push the cd tray in to close it instead of pushing the button, everytime we smoke in the room, etc....

Exactly, there is NO excuse for a pricey product to break down so easily, not just PS2\'s.

And when a problem is so widespread as this, its more likely the manufacturer than the user.
