SCEE prepares to lift the lid on online plans for PS2
« on: October 02, 2002, 11:27:57 AM »
13:22  SCEE president Chris Deering is to make an announcement regarding online functions through PlayStation 2 later this month.

"Chris said he was going to make some form of announcement towards the end of October," said a spokesperson for the company. He went on to confirm that the announcement would be concerned with online plans for PS2.

The content of Deering\'s revelation is not yet known. Rumour circulated recently that Sony was preparing to launch the PS2 hard drive before the end of the year, although comments made by Sony in the last 24 hours appear to have pushed this into the realm of fantasy.

Sony\'s PS2 online plans, the subject of much speculation since the launch of the machine, have long been thought to utilise various services, such as banking and Web browsing, as well as games.

Looks like we\'ll know soon enough. Watch this space for further details.

I think the HDD has a use.  Mainly just for MMORPGs, but still.

The game EverQuest Online Adventures won\'t use the HDD.  What happens if they discover some major duping bug in the game, or some way to get tons of money quick?  What can they do about it?

A MMORPG that can\'t fix bugs or add new content every so often isn\'t worth whatever they charge for it.

FFXI will use the HDD, they\'ve already added tons of stuff and fixed bugs in Japan, and they said they can raise the level cap all the way to 250 (I think it\'s at 50 now).  The game would be screwed if they didn\'t have the ability to fix bugs.

And GT4, when it goes online, I remember hearing you should be able to download new cars and tracks.

HDD  = death of gaming.

Come on people, it\'s a gimmick and plus the only reason most people can give for having one is for developers can patch the game. I personally don\'t want to have to download patches for my console games.

Speaking of gimmicks - did anyone else read on Gamespot where Sony wants to make the PS2 able to record TV shows and what not?

Gimmick!

I want the HDD to be able to download demos, new tracks, cars, skins, maps ect.. (yes, more like PCs) perhaps even mods (but that would be pretty hard to make for a console game.)

Yes, and I would like if it could. My VHS player sucks donkey nuts.. (when I record from a certain channel the picture gets very, very grainy..) :)

(1) If you want all that - play PC games.

(2) Buy Ultimate TV or Tivo.

I wouldn\'t go so far as to say the HD is the death of gaming...I don\'t think Sony should rely on people to buy it though.   I won\'t unless it\'s dirt cheap...or unless a game fully utilizes it.

Like Blinx does with Xbox HD...

There\'s no way the HDD could be the death of gaming.  A HDD could be useful, especially for online games, but I don\'t think it needs to be included with the console.

As long as a console has online gaming, there will be developers who want to put MMORPGs on it.  You pretty much need HDs for those games if you want them to be halfway sucessful.  That\'s why I think Sony\'s way of offering a HDD, as an addon, is the best solution.

It still gives developers the option to make good MMORPGs with changing content, or to use the game for other online games, something like what is planned for GT4.  But it doesn\'t leave the option of releasing games that have had little to no testing with hopes to just patch it later.

along with maybe in some cases the storeage of ONline patches for online games.

sorry but i see this as a USEFUL tool if used right and not some over priced Mech controller for the X bouxs:rolleyes:

I have a good PC :)

But I still cant play any of my console games on the PC.
I want "updatable" console games as well..

Don’t you think it would be pretty nice to be able to download new cars and tracks for lets say GT4? Or maybe a new city for GTA4 (online) .. Or perhaps a new mod for Red Faction 2?
I\'d like that, and Im sure Im not the only one.

2. Whatever those things are they are not avalible here yet.
I just want to be able to record "things" (;)) with good quality and I cant do that on my VHS.. So PS2 would be fine.. Lots of stuff avalible in one box.

the problem with that Fastson, is that developers may start releasing INCOMPLETE games and patching them later.  Or games that havent been fully tested.  *looks at FFXI*

HDD is of course a gimmick.  Hell, the ONLY game that requires it is FFXI.
